What's Not To Love About The Stooges?! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ever since I was a child, I can remember laughing until my side hurt at the antics of Moe, Larry, and Curly. However, until just recently, the only ways to relive those hilarious moments were through short syndication stints on AMC and SpikeTV. Sure, a zillion DVD sets of the Stooges have been produced in the last couple decades, but none in the format that TV fans want...season-by-season (or, in the Stooges' case, year-by-year, as "seasons" hadn't even been thought of yet!). With the release of this DVD volume, though, the Stooges can finally be enjoyed in their purest form...one after another of pure hilarity!

Though it is a bit difficult to describe the antics of the Three Stooges, suffice it to say that they defined the genre of "slapstick" comedy. Mostly, the Stooges' shorts (each "episode" runs about 15-17 minutes in length) see the Stooges as down-on-their-luck Depression-era bums looking to do anything (sports, work, marriage, etc.) to make a buck. Of course, because they are so inept at working as a team, hilarity ensues! The Stooges were also masters of physical comedy (by far the best that has ever graced the Silver Screen of television), and their crazy slaps, punches, and manic routines will have you marveling at their physical talents as actors.

I mainly bought this set to reminisce by myself, but my younger (10 years old) sister also took a liking to them, and thus we started watching them together on a regular basis. She loves the silliness of Curly, the cluelessness of Larry, and how Moe always concocts the schemes but mostly ends up on the receiving end of the chaos!

To conclude, the Three Stooges are a comedy team that will never die, but came quite close to fading into obscurity before these DVD's were released. Now, however, you (and your family members) can appreciate their comedic genius for years to come!

Will you be buying Volume II after this purchase? As Curly would say: "Soitenly"!

At their peak? 5 out of 5 stars.

Perhaps the Stooges in their finest shorts. The two Nazi parodies are worth the price alone. Curly is in top form, not showing any of the signs of his heart sickness that later shorts will document. Every sight/sound gag in their repertoire is on display: the fully realized Stooges "concept," if you will.

As with the previous two releases, the sound and image quality, so sorely lacking for so many years, is razor sharp. The collection looks to have been imported from original negatives, they are so good.

Mammy 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the all-time best routines is when the boys sing Mammy in "All the World's a Stooge". Also in this short is Curly's recitation of "Little Fly Upon the Wall". Pure genius.

great one 5 out of 5 stars.

Another Volume Of Three Stooges Hilarity! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After purchasing the first volume of the Three Stooges collection and watching it with family members, I was pleasantly surprised that the second volume was out so soon! I pre-ordered it as soon as I could and, after viewing each short from 1937-1939, was not disappointed in the least!

The first volume had a few (but ONLY a few) clunker episodes as the Stooges and their directors were still trying to find their niche, but this volume is air-tight in both acting and directing, as the Stooges really find their formula in appealing to the baser instincts of Depression-Era film-goers (as movies were one of the few things they COULD afford for entertainment).

In my opinion, this is (overall) the best volume of the four that have been released so far, as there isn't a bad episode in the bunch. If you enjoyed the first collection, or just love the Stooges in general, buy this product with confidence that it will give you many hours of side-splitting laughs!

The fourth chronological collection shows Moe, Larry and Curly at their best with the twenty-one shorts from 1943 to 1945. In many ways, the shorts are transitional, as ill-health has begun to take its toll on Curly. Problems with high-blood pressure and other medical issues, including a series of mini-strokes that worsened in 1946 are evident in the later shorts in the collection. Even in the classic, "Micro-Phonies," one of their best shorts, shows Curly at just slightly less manic and physically frantic as those of just a year or two earlier. Still, with a few exceptions, these two- reelers show the comedy team at their slapstick best.

Before commenting on the films themselves, it is important to note that Sony has done a fine job in restoring the shorts. Gone are the scratches and out-of-focus scenes, as well as the crudely edited offerings previously shown on TV. Picture and sound are excellent; one can imagine the enjoyment experienced in theaters when these classics first appeared onscreen.

Many of these shorts are not seen today on television. During the war years, plots revolved around antics against Nazis and "Japs" in ways now considered to be politically incorrect. In particular, "The Yokes on Me" features the Stooges efforts to capture three Japanese "escapees" from a relocation camp. Although the physical comedy is typical stooge slapstick, the idea that US Citizens were imprisoned in WWII remains repugnant. Still, the short reflects the (unfortunate) prevailing attitude of the times. Other shorts, such as "No Dough Boys" are more innocuous, parodying stereotypes in more cartoonish "over-the-top" ways.

"They Stooge to Conga" is the first of the 1943 shorts and is considered to be the most violent of the shorts. Even slapstick devotees cringe when Curly impales his telephone pole climbing spike in Moe's eye, ear and skull. I would agree that is over the top, but it is like a car wreck: one feels compelled to watch. Look for Dudley Dickerson, the gifted African-American character actor, whose brilliant comedy antics are sadly seen as too-stereotypical for today's audiences. The Stooges used him in a number of their comedies. Given the nature of the times, his performances are physically inspired pieces of slapstick.

"Back from the Front", released later in 1943, features Moe's third impersonation of Hitler. The short takes place on the S.S. Schickelgruber and features non-stop mayhem. The stooges look interesting in their full beards.

"Micro-Phonies" is one of my favorite Stooge shorts. Although Curly's physical mannerisms have been slowed by his medical difficulties, facial expressions and precision mimicking of "The Voice of Spring" are priceless. Together with Moe and Larry, he offers musical interpretations of several classics that makes one wish that the Stooges had done more with song and dance in their comedies.

Like all of the shorts, viewers have their preferences. Still, most of those in this volume are entertaining, providing laughs some 60-plus years after their original release.

Editorial Review:

The hilarious slapstick antics of Larry, Moe and Curly are back in digitally re-mastered versions of The Three Stooges shorts originally created from 1943 - 1945. The set includes, in original release order, all 21 complete shorts filmed during these years.

Fun with The Three Stooges in six zany episodes:

A Plumbing We Will Go(1940): Three would-be plumbers mistake pipes filled with wires for water pipes. Dudley Dickerson's battle in the kitchen is a highlight.

Men In Black(1934): Medical malpractice is an understatement when describing what the Stooges do to the Los Arms Hospital, where they dispense unorthodox advice, flirt with the nurses and battle a babbling intercom system. With: Dell Henderson, Jeannie Roberts and Billy Gilbert.

Micro-phonies (1945): When Curly is mistaken for an opera diva, the Stooges find their calling on the stage as Senorita Cucaracha (Curly) and Senors Mucho and Gusto (Larry and Moe). With: Christine McIntyre, Symona Boniface and Gino Corrado.

Punch Drunks(1934): Larry's rendition of Pop Goes The Weasel transforms Curly from a harmless cream puff into a vicious contender, but when Larry's violin breaks, it threatens Curly's boxing career with a TKO. With: Dorothy Granger and Al Hill.

Three Little Pigskins (1934): When the Stooges are mistaken for star football players, they not only find themselves running for goals but running for their lives when they get mixed up with the gorgeous girlfriends of a group of mobsters. With: Lucille Ball, Gertie Green and Phyllis Crane.

Woman Haters(1934): When Larry breaks his oath to the Woman Haters Club by marrying, he is treated like a traitor by his fellow members. But getting out of the marriage may be even more harmful than anything his friends could ever do to him. The Stooges' first short was done entirely in rhyme. With: Marjorie White.

Disapointed 1 out of 5 stars.

When I bought this set from wal-mart, I should have taken my own advice:"Let the buyer beware."

Given the number of shorts the 3 stooges made, the content of this set is lame. How they get away with calling this "75th anniversary collection" I'll never know. I enjoyed watching what is on this set-but there's not a whole lot to brag about. "Kooks ture" is about the best thing here-but still it's not worth it.

Don't buy this set! Now you've been warned.

Ripoff 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought this set thinking I was going to enjoy many hours of The Stooges. It only has a few shorts that are all over-played on TV, having seen them a hundred times already.

Charging a full retail price for a set like this, containing just a few shorts, is shameful. You're paying an extra 10 bucks for the tin box, little more. This set is a bargain-bin type item worth maybe four to five bucks at most.

It's my fault for being suckered out of my money. This purchase has taught me to read the content descriptions VERY CAREFULLY before buying future "special collections."

Now I'm off to buy the REAL complete chronological collections of The Three Stooges being released by Sony Pictures.

The DVD's aren't the same quality as something that was filmed 2007 but for 1940's film it is great and very enjoyable to watch.

Still funny 5 out of 5 stars.

O.K. if you want blue-ray crap full of great images and ripped off dialogue don't buy this! This is for the conniseuer of original material! It ain't disney but much better! I remember watching these shorts as a kid so they have special meaning! Plus its so freekin cheap! If your the slightest bit artistic or enjoy satire in comics thats politically incorrect now, than buy this without hesitation! So that being said....yes the quality isn't up to blue ray, but I'd rather watch old popeye than the next disney snoozer on blu-ray anyday! Very impressed!
