A Quick Comment On Each Film 5 out of 5 stars.

Here are a few quick notes on each movie in this collection to let you know what to expect, as well as a ranking on a five-star scale:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: An interesting plot, but takes itself too seriously to be a fun film. (***)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Very emotional drama, character development, and intense action make this a solid film in step with the original Star Trek "cannon". (*****)

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: What the film lacks in overall plot it makes up for in emotional tension. (****)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: A comedic genius; light-hearted all around and full of laughs. (*****)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier: The "search for God" plot proves to be unfruitful, while the main villain does not create credible tension. (**)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: A sort of futuristic re-telling of the United States/Russia relationship that hits all the right buttons to create high drama. (*****)

Star Trek Generations: Filled with iconic moments, but underachieves in the execution of nearly all of them. (***)

Star Trek: First Contact: An action-packed adventure film that exploits the Picard/Borg relationship adeptly and uses the Next Generation ensemble crew to their fullest. (*****).

Star Trek: Insurrection: Despite delving into races never before seen on the show, this film combines a sound human-interest plot with the returning Next Generation ensemble cast, who are great as usual. (****).

Star Trek: Nemesis: This film is the reason why the Next Generation cast was put to pasture, due to contrived drama and weak plotlines. (*).

Should Be Titled "Harve Bennett's & Nicholas Meyer's 'Stolen' Star Trek I: Redefining Space With Old Scripts" 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Let me be clear, as far as I am concerned, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)" is a fun movie; but the film IS NOT GENE RODDENBERRY'S MOVIE!!! Moreover, "Paramount executives, who blamed the relative failure of the first movie on the constant rewrites demanded by Roddenberry," removed Gene Roddenberry from the production and reduced his involvement to an "Executive Consultant" advisory position. Paramount then went out and hired Harve Bennett to "replace" Gene Roddenberry. While Gene Roddenberry was allowed to view and comment upon all scripts and dailies emanating from the production, the creative team was free to disregard Gene Roddenberry's input, which Harve Bennett elected to do. Next, Paramount had Nicholas Meyer, also the director, write the script for the Wrath of Khan. Meyer, who knew nothing about Gene Roddenberry's conceptualization of Star Trek--let alone ever viewing an episode prior to being hired--watched a few of the original television episodes and concluded that Star Trek was little more than Horatio Hornblower in space. So, Meyer wrote his own Horatio Hornblower script, Harve Bennett "bought" into it and convinced Paramount. Just like that, Meyer and Bennett redefined the entire concept of Star Trek, literally taking Star Trek to places Gene Roddenberry never envisioned.

Equally disturbing is the fact that the newly appointed "creators" of Star Trek completely ignored Robert Wise's efforts to transform the vision of the original Star Trek television series into theatrical "big screen" movies that continued the true intent of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: intelligence; compassion; equality and fairness; symbolism and analogy; social awareness; controversy; and wonderful, fun, thought provoking, imperturbable entertainment. Instead, Bennett and Meyer went for a movie that was: simple minded "naval" action; ruthlessness and bitterness; bigotry and injustice; basic descriptions and cliches; narrow mindedness; uncontroversial (except for the poor actors that were forced to say lines that made them "ill"); and tried and true, blow it up, in your face conflict.

While I was disappointed when I saw "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" at the theater, I remember consoling myself that the movie did revisit an old script's story line and that Ricardo Montalbán was brilliant in his updated performance. In deed, I believe that it is Montalban's performance that kept this movie from being a disaster. Yes, Meyer's "British Navy" and 18th century broadsides appealed to the then current generation of "movie goers," satiating their lust for endless, pointless "action." But, I remain convinced that without a performance equivalent to Montalban's, along with the "killing off" of Leonard Nimoy's character, Captain Spock, the movie would have been a boring movie not even worthy of three stars.

As I stated in my review of "Star Trek - The Motion Picture: The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)," I consider Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek--and his vision of the show--to have been the best television show up to that time (1966-1969). Equally, I consider Harve Bennett's and Nicholas Meyer's "stolen" Star Trek to be an entirely different production. While I was convinced in 1984 by friends to go with them to see "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," I essentially "gave up" on the whole Star Trek "franchise" after "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

It would not be until 2002, when the DVDs came out that I would watch a Star Trek movie ("Star Trek - The Motion Picture: The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition"); and then, only because my oldest boy was trying to reconnect with me by giving me the movie for Christmas. It is only now, 16 years after "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" came out, that I have decided to purchase "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)." While the extra features and time have softened me, and I will most likely watch the movie more than once, I still believe that "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)" is no more than an average movie (i.e., a three star film).

Fight For Humanity Or A Madman's Revenge? 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

That's the key question one should ask himself when viewing "Star Trek: First Contact." In this first solo outing for the TNG crew, Picard and the gang find themselves facing off against the highly popular villains called the Borg. Having been defeated every time they've battled the Enterprise, the Borg devise a plan to travel back in time to stop a key event in Earth's history and then (big shocker) assimilate everybody. In a heated and action-packed space battle, the Borg jump through time with the Enterprise E hot on their tale. The Borg cube is destroyed almost immediately, but this is only the beginning of a fast-paced and highly enjoyable action/dramatic yarn that goes so far as to question a particular crewmember's sanity.

While he isn't at the helm of the Enterprise in this film, Jonathan Frakes does call the shots behind the camera. He takes the screenplay crafted by Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore and blends just enough action into the script to keep the story moving at a good clip. As much as I enjoy TNG, I do have to say that the series was often weighed down by long and drawn out moments of dialogue. Frakes puts the brakes on these sequences at just the right time.

Patrick Stewart delivers a solid performance as Picard. Matching him scene-for-scene is Alfre Woodard in an excellent performance as a fish-out-of-water aboard the Enterprise. James Cromwell proves once again that he deserves bigger roles than the ones he usually gets. Brent Spiner is sufficient as always as Data and the rest of the crew do an excellent job as well.

The music and special effects are also very good. As stated before, the space battle sequence is amazing. There's also some zero-gravity action as well.

This two-disc set is an excellent addition to any Trek fan's collection (or, in this case, collective). The special features are a nice treat, and I personally enjoyed the audio commentary from Frakes. I highly recommend this action-packed space yarn to Trek fans as well as fans of excellent science fiction.

In their second big screen adventure, the year is 2373 and the crew of the Enterprise-E has learned the Borg has returned. Because of Captain Picard's past experiences with the Borg, Starfleet has ordered the Enterprise to stay out of the fight. Realizing too much is at stake, Picard disobeys orders and takes the Enterprise to Earth. His knowledge of Borg technology leads the Federation fleet to victory, but a Borg sphere escapes and opens a temporal vortex. The Enterprise pursues and travels back to April 4, 2063; the day before the first warp flight.

Plot holes galore, the absolute worst of Trek 1 out of 5 stars.

The movie's script is obnoxious, cheesy, uninspired, insipid, mundane, overwrought with unnecessary technical jargon and bogged down by ridiculously oversized plotholes. The best use for this movie is as a doorstop.

A Comedic Genius 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Though Star Trek: The Original Series is probably best known for its diverse cast of characters and mind-bending storylines, many fans of the show consider the comedic-style episodes of the show to be paramount to all others, as they allow the main characters to emote in non-formulaic fashions (remember Sulu brandishing a rapier, Spock hanging from a tree, or the Easter bunny in "Shore Leave"?).

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a throwback to that style of episode. The film is bookended by moments of seriousness (which keep the film from falling too far outside the Star Trek cannon), but the meat of the story is hilarity all around!

The movie begins with the U.S.S. Enterprise crew heading back home (in a Romulan warship) to face the criminal charges stemming from Captain Kirk's decision to destroy the Enterprise. On the way back to Starfleet, however, the crew finds that the world is in great peril and set off back in time (to twentieth-century San Francisco) to make things right.

While in Frisco, the chaos (and hilarity!) begins. Whether it is Kirk and Spock trying to fit in among the locals, Scotty deciphering old computer technology, or Chekhov trying to find his "nuclear wessels", non-stop laughs abound.

When the Enterprise crew finally does return to Starfleet, the scene that follows is one of the most uplifting moments in the entire Star Trek cannon, effectively ending the Star Trek II-IV movie "trilogy" and giving the show new life in the future.

To conclude, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a rousing film filled with non-stop laughs. Though not as serious as all the other "Original Series" films, this movie has been embraced more than any other for its ability to lampoon both present and future cultures alike. If you just finished watching Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and are not in the mood for any more gut-wrenching scenes, this is the breathe of fresh air you need!

Surprisingly Good After the Re-edit 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like most others, I eagerly anticipated the release of ST:TMP during the late 70s and was disappointed.

No longer.

The Director's Cut restores more even pacing to a story that is rather simple on the surface [think The Changeling Part II] but has multiple layers and a depth of complexity that no other movie in the franchise could hope to touch.

Have no doubts- if you're looking for fast paced action, well-developed characters or chemistry from the Big Three [Kirk, Spock, McCoy] look elsewhere.

But if you want a movie that discusses big issues in a serious way then you won't do better than Star Trek the Motion Picture. Consciousness, the meaning of life, religion and even love are addressed in extremely subtle ways that make this movie the most "adult" franchise science fiction movie out there and is far more in the spirit of 2001: A Space Odyssey than say Star Wars for example.

Highly recommended.

An Underrated Effort 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Though often reviewed as a typical "odd numbered" Star Trek movie (for some reason, the even numbered movies in the series have performed much better than the even numbers), Star Trek: Insurrection is actually a rather strong forte into the Trek universe.

The conflict of this film works on two levels: First, there is the conflict between two races of people (a plot point as old as time but one that, if done right, can be quite effective). Second, there is the conflict between Captain Jean-Luc Picard (and thus his crew) against upper-ranking Federation officials, who want to violate the sacred Prime Directive of the universe. Both of those areas of conflict, acting simultaneously throughout the movie, are surprisingly effective and compelling.

Besides the effectiveness of the main plot, however, this film also (much like the previous First Contact film) contains some interesting and humorous character development. While trying to rescue a persecuted race of people, the crew of the Enterprise investigates a planet on which the effects of aging are reversed. Thus, while the android Data is unaffected, other characters are taken on an interesting hormonal journey: Worf begins acting like a typical (violent!) Klingon youth, Crusher and Troi notice certain, um, body parts firming up, and Geordi LaForge regains the use of his natural eyes.

To conclude, Star Trek: Insurrection, while generally regarded as a sub-par effort, actually breaks the "odd-bad, even-good" chain of Star Trek movies. If you are new to the Star Trek universe and are interested in this movie, I would recommend watching the previous film, First Contact, in order to get a better handle on the Next Generation characters before watching this film. If you thoroughly enjoyed First Contact, this movie (with its action/adventure combined with great human drama and humor) will not disappoint you.

Search for Spock - he's ba-aack! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Average followup to STII:Wrath of Khan. High points: Character development (every key character has something to do in this film), Leonard Nimoy. Low points: Comparatively weak storyline, a weak job by Christopher Lloyd (I guess I am just used to seeing him in the Back to the Future movies). Still worth having in your collection, though, if you like Star Trek.

A must have for any trekie 4 out of 5 stars.

Leonard Nimoy, Now At Peace As Mr Spock, Spectacularly Directs Himself Back To Life--But In Bennett's and Meyer's Star Trek 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Given that I was essentially pushed into seeing "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" at the theater when it came out, when my son gave me this DVD set for Christmas in 2003 and we watched it together, I found that time, Leonard Nimoy's directing, Nimoy's commentary, and the extra features provided me with a more receptive frame of reference. More to the point, if I set aside the fact that this is not the Star Trek I love--Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek--and watch the film as a science fiction movie, I am able to "enjoy" the movie more. And it doesn't hurt that Christopher Lloyd plays the (now requisite villain in Harve Bennett's new vision of Star Trek), Klingon Commander Kruge.

Besides "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," I have watched "The Search for Spock" the most times. In the final analysis, I would say it is the best non-Gene Roddenberry Star Trek movie. (Please note that I am well aware of the fact that Paramount has "added" Gene Roddenberry's name to this and other Star Trek movies, but both Roddenberry and Bennett/Paramount openly state that Roddenberry's "involvement" was completely ignored). On the other hand, to the degree that Leonard Nimoy understands the character of Mr Spock as intended by Gene Roddenberry, I would argue that it is Leonard Nimoy's influence as the director--and uncredited writer--that is the force that makes "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" more tolerable and watchable. While I cannot say for sure, I suspect it is also due to Leonard Nimoy's direction and writing that all of the characters have well developed roles, which in turn led them to provide some better than usual performances.

Will I watch "Star Trek III - The Search for Spock (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)" again? Yes. Is it a great movie? No; but it is better than average.

What Does A Movie Series Do After It Has Been "Killed?" It Futilely Seeks Resurrection, But Finds Only Lost And Tired Ghosts! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The only thing "Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)" has going for it, is that it is indelible proof that Harve Bennett, Nicholas Meyer, and Paramount were not making Star Trek movies, never had a clue what Star Trek was about, and were unabashedly willing to "steal" Gene Roddenberry's name and show to make a few bucks. The cast, moreover, have clearly "out grown" their roles--especially in stature and age--performing like tired, lost, sad, and diminished versions (ghosts, if you will) of their characters. The overbearing action and special effects that cow today's audiences stands as the avatar of what is allegedly a Star Trek movie. But, I will state emphatically that "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" is NOT A Star Trek film. It can be called Star Trek only in the fact that Paramount "stole" the name, as well as Gene Roddenberry's name, and taped it onto a movie.

As with Star Trek movies IV and V, I never went to see Star Trek VI in the theater. As stated elsewhere I have been attempting to find a way to "accept" these revisionist movies that excluded the creator of Star Trek, and, as such, I purchased this movie. While I will grant you that the script is better than Star Trek V, and the movie clearly revels in the advancements of special effects, the bad acting and illogical directing left me shaking my head. All I can really say, is poor Gene Roddenberry. He was, barely, alive to witness the utter destruction of his greatest hopes. Yes, Roddenberry is "said" to have found the movie "good," but what else could he say? It was like rubbing someone's nose in a "big stink" that was supposed to be roses, and asking how it smelled.

But, as a "foolish" collector, I can say, "I have all six of the Star Trek movies that starred the original television cast." I "ain't" sure it is something I am all that proud of accomplishing.
