Perfect DVD set for the best season of one of the most interesting shows on TV 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think this is the rare TV show that i've had the pleasure of watching chronologically as it came out. And, while I feel the show has lost alot of it's direction now that it's in it's final season (they REALLY needed to stick with shorter seasons....), this first season is one of the best things put to the TV screen. I couldn't recommend it enough.

I say the above as a newbie to the Battlestar universe. I never saw the original (thankfully!)and had no idea what to expect. I heard since that alot was changed from the original series, but I couldn't tell you what. I'm just glad this series, particularly this season was so damn good!

The DVD includes not just the first season entire, but the original three-hour miniseries that started it and probably the BEST extras this side of DR Who that gives you EVERYTHING you'd ever want to know about this brilliant show's first (and BEST) season.

One of the best series 5 out of 5 stars.

I've watched this series over and over. If you have the slightest interest in Superman, you don't want to miss this saga. I will admit, there are a few episodes every season that hiccup the main plot, but the cast of characters makes you angry, sad, and happy. You owe yourself to give it a try. Buy the whole series through season 7 and keep watching the tv program. It won't last forever.

At 59...hooked on Smallville! 4 out of 5 stars.

If you've been a fan of SUPERMAN from the 50's and 60's, you'll totally enjoy the first season of SMALLVILLE! One of my twenty-three year old students lent me his copy for a weekend. I had my own two 8-hour marathons---watching all thirteen episodes and the special features in two days! This first series erases any qaps about how Superman came to be. The importance of FAMILY and FRIENDS are highlighted.

Smallville: 3rd Season 4 out of 5 stars.

Being a big Smallville (Superman) fan, I have enjoyed the series. Amazon always offers DVD's at such a wonderful price! I especially like the free shipping for orders over $25.00. I always receive confirmation of order placed, and shipping date. In all the years of ordering from Amazon I have only had to return 2 DVD's because they skipped. Looking forward to ordering the 6th, 7th and when available, the 8th season.
I have ordered other items as well from Amazon and have never been disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Clark Kent lives in Smallville, but in many ways he is out of this world, and so is this spectacular series that provides a fascinating spin on Superman lore. Season 3 is marked by Clark's inability to overpower destiny and its pressing call for his return home. Clark, who has left Smallville for Metropolis, returns to Smallville to help his parents, who are desperately trying to save their cash-strapped farm and is happily surprised to find that Lex Luthor has survived a deadly jet crash. Lex and Clark's ill-fated camaraderie is strengthened by this miracle but causes tension in the close-knit Kent family, as Jonathan fears that Lex will emulate Lionel and his unscrupulous ways, even while Lex has tried to establish his own identity.

Worst DVD packaging EVER!! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not going to comment on the quality of the show. I haven't watched the 2nd season yet, but the first was an easy 4 stars. This DVD set features "eco-friendly" packaging, which is fine in it's own right. But the packaging severely damages the discs. The 2nd disc in my set was already delaminated upon first opening. In short, the spindles do not allow you to remove the disc without bending the disc severely. They also grip the discs way too tight, which I believe accounts for the delamination (bending the discs also accelerates delamination). If you look through my reviews you'll notice a couple of other reviews commenting on poor DVD packaging, but this set is BY FAR THE WORST!! If you are a DVD collector I assume you're educated in proper DVD care and storage...if you're not a DVD collecting nerd like me, then you may not know the effects of such horrendous packaging. Take it from me, DO NOT BUY THIS. Rent or download it instead.

Lost Focus A Bit But Still "Super" Television 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In the beginning (seasons 1-3), the concept of Smallville was to chronicle a young Clark Kent through his high school years. After three seasons, however, the character relationships (especially Clark and Lana) that provided the emotional punch to the show became played out. The "on again, off again" Clark/Lana saga was getting a bit old, the evilness of Lionel Luthor was well established, while the inner workings of Lex Luthor's tortured psyche continued to become apparent. Barring a major change, the show looked like it may have been reaching a climax, what with the main characters graduating high school. Yet, as is often a "problem" in televised drama, the show was so popular on its WB (now CW) network that it would surely continue for future change. Thus, major change to the structure of the show is exactly what happened. Let's start with the not-so-great changes (trying not to reveal too many spoilers!) and end on the high notes:

For the first time, the writers/producers constructed a season-long dramatic arc in which Lana (controlled by an ancient medieval witch, as improbably as that may sound), Lex, and Clark race to obtain three Kryptonian stones. Needless to say, this storyline was quite contrived (most likely to give Kristin Kruek (Lana) something to portray) and lacked the punch of the Kryptonian caves or Lex's insanity of earlier seasons. Thus, the "mythology" episodes of this season were subpar.

The other disappointing aspect of Season Four was the introduction of Lois Lane. Though (obviously) an extremely important part of Clark's future, the Lois character struggles to fit into the overall scheme of the show. My personal theory is that she was added to spice up the show's sex appeal (one look at Erica Durance (Lois) will show you why) to appeal to the young WB audience.

Besides those major gaffes, however, Smallville's fourth season provided a number of fantastic moments that kept its fans (young and old alike) tuning in each week:

-The "no flights" rule is temporary lifted in the season premiere.
-Clark is introduced to a certain "speedster" with whom he will later pair with.
-An incredible acting performance from Tom Welling (Clark) after switching bodies with Lionel Luthor.
-A mischevious Russian villian is introduced who continues to torment Clark long into the future.
-Alicia Baker (Clark's former love) is brought back in a very emotional two-part series.
-The Kent family comes across a later-famous pooch with certain "abilities".
-Perhaps the best acting performance from Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) in which his "good" and "evil" sides square off against each other (ala Captain Kirk in Star Trek).
-The final scene of the season, which introduces a critically important piece of Clark Kent's future.

To conclude, the fourth season of Smallville lacked the emotional focus of the three preceding seasons, but still managed enough "wow" moments to continue satisfying the "shipper" (relationship-based) and die-hard comic book Smallville fans alike.

Editorial Review:

Clark Kent will have plenty of reasons to remember his senior year! The thrilling reinterpretation of the Superman legend evolves in Season 4, whose 22 episodes include the quest for 3 Kryptonian crystals and Clark's bold attempt to keep those mysterious stones from destroying Earth. Clark also becomes a highly recruited football star. Lana gets a boyfriend. Lois Lane smart, opinionated and entirely annoying to Clark comes to Smallville. Chloe learns the scoop of the century. Lionel becomes a straight-up nice guy. Lex steps further from the light into darkness. New characters (Krypto, Mr. Mxyzptlk) and a new power emerge. The calling awaits Clark an awakening to a destiny that only he can accept and fulfill.

Remember the one where the lady swallowed the Guinea pig? 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Unfortunately, that's one of several reminders I throw out there whenever I'm trying to find out if someone has ever watched V before.

Eating live rodents, harvesting humans for food, and stealing the earth's water supply are not usually the big plot items that turn people onto a TV show or movie. And yet in 1983, everyone was glued to their television sets to watch V. (And even those who weren't were joining the throng of fans a year later for V: THE FINAL BATTLE.) Perhaps, it's because, although most people are not science fiction fans, they will watch a science fiction show (or movie) that has a non-sci-fi element as its primary vehicle. For instance, there are the mythological and mystical aspects of the STAR WARS saga. Many feel that there's a theological theme to the MATRIX trilogy.

In the same vein, V is undoubtedly a World War II/Holocaust allegory. The Visitors' emblem looks very similar to a swastika. They post propaganda posters all over the place. They establish the Visitor Friends Group in every major city (equivalent to the Hitler Youth). The Visitors require all scientists and their families to be registered; these same scientists (with their families) are often the target of outrageous persecutions and false accusations of conspiring against the Visitors.

V is the quintessential cheesy 80s melodrama. There are no fabulous performances in V, and none of the principle actors went on to bigger and better careers. The special effects, though unremarkable by today's standards, were way ahead of the game 25 years ago. (And many of the special effects sequences are recycled not only throughout this series but also throughout V: THE FINAL BATTLE and V: THE SERIES).

The unique thing V does offer is fun, exciting, intriguing, and action-packed family entertainment. And this kind of entertainment was delivered at a time when family entertainment was, unfortunately, going rapidly out of style.

I enjoy this series about as much as anything I can think of. It is wonderful to watch it on DVD and not have to watch the reruns on SciFi channel. I do wish they had released seasons 2.0 and 2.5 together on the same DVD set. We could surely have saved some money.

Excellent series of Torchwood episodes. Very dark and violent at times (and filled with homosexual undertones - which we like!), but this balances the humor of dr WHO. Excellent.

More good stuff from Cardiff 4 out of 5 stars.

For the most part I liked this series as much as the first one, but I intensely disliked the character die off at the end. I wonder how the third season, rumoured to be just 5 episodes, possibly shown in one week (in the UK), will deal with that???

Powerful series, more outstanding British telly! 5 out of 5 stars.

Torchwood Series Two presents even better scriptwork, more in depth character development, and several deep kidney punches in the storyline, not to mention the magnificent tie ins to Doctor Who really makes this a better season than Season One.

The only sad thing is, here in the states, we'll have a long wait for Season Three!!

Alf is the nice cute ET who comes to you at home, and starting this moment, every day is not the same. very very nice stories, for the whole family. Enjoy

Editorial Review:

On September 22, 1986, a lovable alien named Alf crashed his spacehip into the home of the unsespecting Tanner family. For the next four years, Alf elusively avoided houseguests, chased the family cat, ate everything in sight, and broke anything of value....but the Tanners always loved the old ALFer.
