Great Movie 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The comic book is really great and the movie trys to equal that greatness and fails; however, as a stand alone movie it is very excellent.

I just hope they keep making other Spawn movies (with the length between the only one and present day I would have to say we aren't going to get another).

This is just another repackage of the movie from years ago. The only difference is the Director's Cut. Meaning its extra scenes and other bonus footage.

You have to be one that likes the extras to purchase this as if you had the original dvd of this you probably could pass on this one.

WARNING: URGENT ALERT! 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Do not purchase any of the NON-definitive edition twilight zone box sets. They are inferior products in comparison to the follow-up sets, which were reissued about 11 months after the fifth and final original collections.

The definitive editions are absolute must haves. Besides the additional content, the sound, video and navigational controls are much better. It is an absolute disgrace that this product is still being sold at such an outrageously high price. It is worth about $20 to $30.

Disclaimer:

I am writing with the bias of a ripped off consumer.

After spending close to $450 dollars on the original five sets, season one of the Definitives was released within a year after the last original was put on sale. I contacted the manufacturer about this flagrant disregard for consumers and received the usual 'blah blah blah...sorry, there's nothing we can do...." response.

If you can't afford the Definitive Editions, I recommend monitoring ebay where you can acquire the originals for a more reasonable price approaching fair market value.

Afterward: My complaints are not about the content; the product is a classic that will continue to entertain viewers for years to come, but repackaged and upgraded products should be discounted--like software programs--for people that have already invested in earlier editions.

Buy the Definitive editions. Do not buy these inferior outdated and overpriced inventory outcasts.

I rate this product: (-89 stars)

Love it! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Sci-Fi fan from way back. The technology in these stories is, no doubt, old. But the stores are done so very well. You can really see the difference between the Mid 80's version and the 21st century version. The work done by the director is great. The actors are timeless. There are some excellent messages in some of these stories. One in particular is "The Star". I am not overly religious, but this is a good Christmas story for those who wish to focus on the day Christ was born. Another good story, for the Santa lovers, is; "Night of the Meek." Very heart warming. Each of these is from Disk 4, episode 13. Last but not least. A good, short story, for the quick minded. On disk 3, episode 12, "I of Newton." Rod Serling would be proud.

The Twilight Zone (1985) is not the best but still a very entertaining and superior anthology series 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a big fan of anthology series ("The Twilight Zone", "Tales From The Crypt", "Amazing Stories", "The Outer Limits", "Tales From The Darkside"), so the 1985 Twilight Zone was something I was interested in seeing. Since I was born in 1986, of course I couldn't watch the series when it aired on CBS. I also never caught it on re-runs like I have every original Twilight Zone episode from 1959 through the early 60's. When I saw it available on dvd, I thought I would buy it to check it out; and I really enojoyed it. One thing I liked right away is that these are hour-long episodes with two or three stories in them. Whether or not I liked every story, I did appreciate the structure of the series. I also liked the theme by the Grateful Dead. As a viewer looking back on something I missed when it aired, of course I viewed it as very nostaligic. Recognizing many actors and actresses who are stars today, whereas if I were watching it back in 1985, I wouldn't know them from Adam because they were either just beginning their careers or not well-known at the time.
To save on space, I will only comment on the first story, which happens to be one of the best of the 1985 series in my opinion....
"Shatterday" Starring Bruce Willis / Directed by Wes Craven
One of the best episodes of this series. A then unknown Bruce Willis stars as Peter Jay Novins, a man who accidentally dials his own phone number and it's picked up by, to his surprise, Peter Jay Novins. It's an original twist on a classic Twilight Zone episode titled "Mirror Image" with Vera Miles as a woman waiting in a train station who encounters her own mirror image trying to take her life over. In "Shatterday", however, there is much more reason behind it and character depth that it makes it less scary as "Mirror Image" because in "Mirror Image", it was not explained why her other self wanted to take over her life so it was more mysterious and, therefore, scary. "Shatterday" is more psychologically haunting as it is a character study of a man who fully realizes why this is happening it him. It makes you stop and think about the things you do and how it can effect others as well as yourself. It is a lesson in life and how we live it with sometimes the harshest consequences. Modern master of horror Wes Craven does a masterful job of directing, and Bruce Willis' performance(s) in this episode is some of his best work.
Other four star stories from the series that I put right next to "Shatterday" are "Word Play" with Robert Klein & Annie Potts, "Examination Day", "A Message From Charity", "The Burning Man" (very terrifying) with Roberts Blossom, "Dealer's Choice" with Morgan Freeman, Garrett Morris, M. Emmett Walsh, Barney Martin & Dan Heydaya (all great character actors), "One Life Furnished In Early Poverty" with Peter Riegert, "Her Pilgrim Soul", "A Small Talent For War" with John Glover, "Need To Know" with William Petersen & Frances McDormand, "Shadow Play" with Peter Coyote, "Quarentine", "Dead Woman's Shoes" with Helen Mirren & Jeffrey Tambor, "Dead Run" with Steve Railsback, "The Library" with Lori Petty.
Some of the other stories are good, but the stories that I don't like very much whether they were boring in a non-forgiving way or they were just plain stupid are "The Elevator", "Devil's Alphabet", "Tooth Or Consequences", "Grace Note", "Ye Gods", "The Little People Of Killany Woods", "The Last Defender Of Camelot". Even the stories I didn't like were interesting to watch... but only once.
In the end, "The Twilight Zone (1985)" is not the best but still a very entertaining and superior anthology series that is a must-own on dvd.

I enjoyed this set very much, the sound and picture is outstanding. And all six stories are very interesting. My favorite is "And All Though The House" it scared my seat off! and I also enjoyed "Collection Completed," "Only Sin Deep," and "Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone." Trust me, if you like this show, you'll love this set!

Editorial Review:

Based on the legendary and gruesome EC Comics from publisher William Gaines, this horror anthology featured stories of murder, the super natural, gore and humor and always had a twist ending of sorts. Some of Hollywood's biggest names took part, either working in front or behind the camera. Hosting duties fell to everyone's favorite decaying corpse, the Cryptkeeper. The success of this series spawned a Saturday morning cartoon series (Tales From the Cryptkeeper), a short-lived Saturday morning game show on CBS (Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House) and lots of merchandise. Two feature films (Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood) were also produced and released in the late 90's. The TV series originally aired on HBO, but was later syndicated to Fox, the Sci-Fi Channel, and most recently AMC. Despite being a short season (only 6 episodes), Season 1 enjoyed the highest ratings in its HBO airings.

Some of the sharpest, tightest writing and acting on record. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In this review, I do not disclose any of the surprise endings. So don't worry.

I own about twenty Twilight Zone discs. Some of the tales are eternal classics, for example, To Serve Man, The Odyssey of Flight 33 (William Shatner), Nick of Time (William Shatner), The Fever, The Living Doll (Telly Sevalas), and Time Enough At Last (Burgess Meredith).

The volume being reviewed, Volume Three, contains some of the tightest writing and sharpest acting that I have ever encountered on any T.V. program or movie.

The first story, Kick the Can, takes place in an old folks home, where the inhabitants can view youngsters out in the street playing kick the can and other games. One of the retired old folks, reminded of his own childhood, is struck with the notion that if he can persuade the other old folks to join in a game of kick the can, they will somehow recapture some aspect of their youth. FIVE STARS.

The second story, Steel, takes place in 1974, a time in the future when boxing has been outlawed and all boxing matches are done with competing robots, where the robots look essentially like real people. The issue is that the owner and mechanic, in charge of their boxing android, realize that their android is broken and won't be fixed before that evening's fight. The owner, Lee Marvin, has the idea of placing himself in the ring, instead of the robot. What is astonishing is Lee Marvin's ability to change personna. In one scene, Lee Marvin is forceful and demanding towards his mechanic, that is, the android's mechanic. And in another scene, Lee Marvin is groveling and apologetic towards the owner of the boxing ring, in a scene where the boxing ring owner complains about Lee Marvin's out-dated robot. FIVE STARS.

(A similar transformation (demanding versus groveling) can be found in the character of Biff, in Back to the Future. When Michael J. Fox travels to the past, he sees Biff abusing Michael J. Fox's father in a soda shop. However, when Michael J. Fox returns to the future, Biff is respectful and groveling towards the father.)

The third story, A Game of Pool, is initiated when Jack Klugman, a pool player in Chicago, vows to himself that he wants to have a match with deceased pool legend, Jonathan Winters. As it turns out, the pool legend materializes, and after several minutes of negotiating, decide to have a match then and there. FIVE STARS.

(Please note that Jonathan Winters was one of the highest profile comedic actors from the 1960s. I recommend Jonathan Winters' narrative of the Paul Bunyan story, accompanied by Duck Baker on guitar, available on compact disc. If you need to buy a kid a gift, I recommend Jonathan Winters' rendition of Paul Bunyan.)

The fourth story on this disc, Walking Distance, starts when a high pressure company executive stops in a rural service station for an hour's worth of repairs on his automobile, then decides to walk to a nearby town when he realizes that the town is where he'd spent his childhood. As it turns out, when he stops in an ice cream parlor for a bit of refreshment, the year is 1938 when the man was just a boy. The man finds his childhood home, visits his disbelieving parents, and unintentionally scares himself off, when he (the executive) discovers himself (the boy) carving his name in a structure in the town park. When the executive (the man) tries to approach himself (the boy), the man again inadvertently frightens the boy, and the boy falls off the edge of a merry-go-round, injures his leg, thus explaining the etiology of the executive's limp. The story is really a mood piece, that is, the story is not a setup for a suprise ending. The story concludes with a charming little narrative. FOUR STARS.

Volume Three of Twilight Zone makes an excellent, inexpensive gift, for just about anyone. This volume does not include any especially creepy or scary scenes. This volume also includes a couple of stories that feature little kids. All of the actors on this disc are easy to like.

Masters of Rip-Off... Terrible Packaging! 1 out of 5 stars.
27 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I hardly ever write reviews, but I am writing in hopes that someone in power at Anchor Bay might read this. I have bought many, many Anchor Bay/Starz products over the years and have always been a big fan. But with Masters of Horror Season 2, a nearly $70 box set on Amazon, I feel completely ripped off.

Ok, unlike the other reviewers I have no asthetic gripes with this packaging. I always take the DVDs out of wierd packaging and put them in something that fits the shelf anyway. However, I received this set yesterday, and it just made me sad. The DVDs are floating around completely unprotected inside the "skull" which means every single one of them is scratched. A few of them are badly scratched all over, while ALL of them have circular scratches (typically the worst kind of scratches) around the the entire outer half-inch or so of the disc. Additionally, instead of including all of the individual episode discs like the last box set, some of the discs are double sided with an episode on each side! Why? So the manufacturer could cut some more corners on an already horribly put together set?

I foolishly assumed that, as with the season one set, this box would contain someting extra that was not available in the individual episode DVDs. It does not. So, if you have the individual episode DVDs, I would recommend sticking with those. However, if you don't mind spending way too much money for a pile of pre-scratched, dual-sided DVDs then this box set is the way to go. Not only do you not get anything extra, you get something far, far less for your money this time around. Shame on you Anchor Bay. I hope everyone returns these as I plan to do.

This DVD definitely prepares you for the new movie I Want to Believe, however, I feel cheated because the DVD came with a movie pass that expires on August 31st! I Want to Believe didn't even stay in theaters for a month here in my hometown!! What the crap is that?

Scary, Fun, Well Written 4 out of 5 stars.

I literally jumped when I watched some of the episodes....and its only a TV show. I had more fun watching this set with my mom than going to see the new XF2 movie. The episodes are very well written and classic. There will be something that you will like on here. If you haven't seen any of them, then you will definitely love the set. It is typical of what x-files is supposed to be without the filler. I would describe this DVD set as spooky and fun and well worth the money, especially if you pick it up used.

Nostalgic Look Back at a Great TV Show 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Unlike the movie it promotes this collection of X-Files episodes truly satisfies and reminded me why I loved the show so much when it was on. Especially the early episodes serve as a time travel device back to the early 90s when anything seemed possible in art of all forms. Other than the excellent acting and writing what shines through the most here is how the X-Files heavily influence the most popular shows today, from Buffy to Lost to Heroes and the upcoming Fringe, the legacy of X-Files is here to stay, and that is a good thing indeed.

A worthy successor to Rod Serling's vision 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The 1980s revival of "The Twilight Zone" had some memorable moments that would stand out in the minds of its viewers. While it did offer some changes (i.e. The Grateful Dead offering its version of the classic theme), all-in-all it was a good follow-on to the classic 1960s series. Purchase it if you are a die-hard TZ fan - if not, its worth a weekend rental.

Episode: The Cold Equations 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After having been sorely disappointed in the purchase of the feature length version of Tom Godwin's story (see review elsewhere on Amazon), I purchased this set primarily to see the treatment my favorite SciFi short story received. I was ENTHRALLED! The TZ's treatment was almost as good as the original written story (which is difficult to find in published form).
The Cold equations is a story that will haunt you, as it has me.
I was able to have my 20 yo son watch the episode. His reaction to it was similar to my own when I first read the short story in my teens.
Congrats to TZ for a wonderful episode. The words "He was not alone" live!
