Buffy's Darkest Season 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This might be the strangest season of Buffy. The villains for most of the season are bumbling idiots (despite the fact that they're super-geniuses with demonology, magic, and robotics). This is the only season where the greatest challenges the Scooby Gang must face don't actually come from the "Big Bad." Instead, most of the serious problems that arise are a result of internal conflict. This is even true of the battle at the end of the season. Even though the crisis is set in motion by Warren of the Trio, the conflict is between members of the gang.

Without giving too much away, this season features the total loss of innocence for all of the main characters. This season is depressing, but it is probably the closest analogue of real life that the show ever has to offer. The characters in Buffy are not perfect people. They have their flaws, and they make some very bad choices (understatement!). Those that survive find ways to cope, and they carry on. I agree with some critics that it is difficult to watch our beloved Buffy characters self-destructing, but their behavior shows that they really are human. By the end of this season, all of the characters have gone through some huge changes. Season six isn't the most fun of all of the seven great years of Buffy, but it very well may end up being one of my favorites. The characters show that they really are incredible because they manage to face their own faults and demons in a way that few people can.

In the end, Buffy is an excellent show because it features clever humor, imaginative villains and dilemmas, exciting action sequences, and lots of hot chicks (Hey, you know that's part of it!). The reason Buffy is a great show is that the actors, writers, and directors really did an awesome job, and the characters are so very real.

... In the "Zone"... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've very little to add to any of the previous reviews. I just wanted to put it out there that anyone that may have been holding off buying any TZ DVD collection can stop waiting. Nevermind the superb A/V transfers from the masters, the bonus features are above and beyond anything any fan could hope to find. Commentaries from a who's who of the great actors that have graced the show, the fantastic music scores, the Rod Serling goodies,... they all make this set far and away the best DVD set to date, not only of the "Zone", but of almost any television show box set I've ever seen. Don't hesitate to get this set, you'll be glad you did!

Twilight Zone rocks 5 out of 5 stars.

I spent over $800 on the VHS videos from Columbia House two decades ago. I spent less than $140 for the complete DVD set and discovered more treasures, rare filmed interviews, bonus extras and high-quality transfers that are far superior to what I have been watching the past 20 years.

The retail price keep lowering over the months but by now it's beyond affordable. I recommend you grab this season box set today.

I also suggest you buy "The Twilight Zone: Unlocking the Door to a Television Classic" because the 800 plus page book is a P-E-R-F-E-C-T companion to the DVD box set. Before or after you watch an episode, you can use the book to uncover the in-jokes, bloopers and trivia that make viewing these episodes fun. Watching the shows is one thing, knowing the behind-the-scenes stuff is even more fun. Both are available on Amazon.

Buffy 3rd Season 3 out of 5 stars.

This DVD set was okay. It was a little more beat up than I would have prefered, but everything was intacted. There were some scratches, but all the DVD's were otherwise in good condition.

Thanks,
Carrie

The third season of Buffy was the best yet. The season-long story arc concerning the Mayor of Sunnydale's preparation for his ascension to full demon-hood was full of twists and turns and benefitted enormously from Harry Groener's exquisite performance, which combined the pseudo-innocence of a 50s sitcom character with the ruthless ambition of a modern Faust. The rocky relationship of Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz) was developed further and brought to a touching conclusion. New characters that would figure importantly in the future were introduced: rival slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), erstwhile Watcher Wesley (Alexis Denisof), and vengeance demon Anya (Emma Caulfield). The regulars of the Scooby Gang--Willow (Allison Hannigan), Xander (Nicholas Brendan), Oz (Scott Green), and the Watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head)--took turns in the spotlight as their characters underwent important changes as well. With so much going on and all of it so well conceived, there is scarcely a dull moment in this exceptionally strong season.

Standout episodes include "The Zeppo" (Xander, suffering an inferiority complex, has his own stand-alone adventure while the writers have fun lampooning a typical Buffy-saves-the-world scenario), "The Prom" (despite the lame hellhounds, this touching episode handles teen love and angst better than John Hughes ever did), and "Graduation Day, Parts 1 & 2" (a suitably cataclysmic and emotional end for a great season).

Editorial Review:

All 22 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 6-disc collectorÂ's edition. From Â"Faith, Hope & Trick,Â" Â"Band CandyÂ" and Â"Bad GirlsÂ" to Â"Consequences,Â" Â"EnemiesÂ" and Â"Graduation Day, Part Two,Â" these Season Three episodes are a must for every true Buffy fan.

Sad Little Season 5 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My family have been fans of the Dead Zone for its first 4 seasons. I would give each of those seasons 5 stars, no problem. But this season! Ack! The writing is so abysmal it's really quite funny, and ludicrous episodes like "Panic" (which make no sense whatsoever)kept us laughing for 30 minutes until we couldn't take it anymore and turned the DVD off. The Great Conspiracy Plot is a no-brainer and rather dull, the assassinations just plain silly. Who wrote these scripts?? I feel sad for the excellent cast, many of whom are notably absent in this series, perhaps they read the scripts and bailed out before humiliating themselves?

Dead Zone Season 5 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a lot like the other seasons, but with a darker plot and an even more unsure Johnny Smith. If you like the other seasons, check it out, because there is only one other season after this one...The Dead Zone - The Complete Fifth Season

Lacking the Greatness of the Former Seasons... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Now, I just recently got into Buffy, and I have to say I'm thoroughly disappointed with the 7th season. I miss the focus on our main three characters, and thought that should have been the point, especially in the last season, but no, the entire focus was shifted to the Potentials, who, by the way, bored me to death. I mean, don't you think this should have been brought up AGES ago, if it was going to be this significant in the final season? Urgh. It's like the final season is a whole new show, one I don't really care for. Nothing happens. Everyone's character is twisted, and nothing like themselves. Everything was just done wrong.
I'm still going to read the season eight comics, just to see if those improve, and I'm really hoping they do, because this was just cringe-worthy.

DEAD ZONE SEASON 4 I AM VERY HAPPY WITH ALL MY DVDS I HAVE RECIVED FROM AMAZON IT HAS BEEN THE BEST MOVIE SITE I HAVE FOUND

Dead Zone gets better 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

OK not everybody is a dead zone fan. I am. I don't like the relationship between Johnny and Sarah. I grow weary of the Stilson storyline and especially the X-Files treatment of it. I guess the writers can go there whenever their creativity takes a break. That said I really liked season 4. Johnny meets a girl psychic, a good episode, and it closes with a bonus Christmas Episode that is my ALL TIME favorite episode of Dead Zone. This season is worth it for any Dead Zone fan, and is a MUST for a serious fan.

Episodes are good - but DVD has manufacturing flaw... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this series soon after it came out, but am just watching it now. It seems whoever manufactured this season's DVD set goofed. When you go to Select Episode (which is what I always do, since I watch one here and there). The list of available episodes is only TWO (although there are FOUR on the DVD). I can see absolutely no way to access the other two episodes unless I go to PLAY ALL and then fast forward (which might not work on all DVD players) to the episode I wish to view. It's really inconvenient. I just thought I'd warn you. But yes - I'd still buy it - I enjoy The Dead Zone episodes, although I like the "threads" to surface in the stories more frequently.

short 4 out of 5 stars.

Good movie series. It is exciting and has good plots. I give it only 4 stars because it only has 12 episodes to the season. Most of the stories stand alone but also inter twine with each other in an abstract way. It is best viewed in order. Some of the stories make you think about our government and is this really happening in our day, and make you wonder,or just plain nervous. Some just make you tear up with joy.

Another great season of The Dead Zone. Anthony Michael Hall's portrayal of main character Johnny Smith is brilliant, each episode is wonderfully compelling that takes you into the unknown with his extraordinary sense of touch. I highly recommend purchasing this series on DVD to keep, its great!!

Continuing its greatness 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Even though the episode Avatar from season 3 was the first episode I watched on TV, it wasn't until this season that I started to get heavily into the show and it's continued ever since, barely missing a single episode. It's this continued success and type of stories they told that make it one of my favorite shows ever, if not my absolute favorite. While season 4 had a couple of uneven parts, it's still largely one of their best years.

Herrenvolk: A pretty good premiere as Mulder investigates a colony looking after bees while protecting Jeremiah Smith. 8.5/10
Home: A controversial, violent and genuinely unsettling episode of a bunch of deformed family members trying to conceive. 8.5/10
Teliko: Rather average episode of a man absorbing the pigmentation of African-Americans. 6/10
Unruhe: Incredibly creepy and the first episode that made me a fan of a killer who projects his thoughts into photographs. 9/10
The Field Where I Died: Great premise but bad execution as Mulder is hinted of sharing a past-life with a cult member. 7/10
Sanguinarium: Another decent episode of medical doctors being possessed for a ritual. 6.5/10
Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man: Excellent episode as we see the past of everyone's favorite chain smoker. Best chocolate monologue ever. 9/10
Tunguska: Intriguing mythology episode as a rock carrying the Black Oil is found and an old enemy resurfaces. 8.5/10

Terma: Part 2 as the agents try to locate the rock and further questions into the mythos. 8.5/10
Paper Hearts: Great episode as Mulder tries to deal with the fact Samantha may not have been abducted but kidnapped by John Lee Roche, a serial killer.
El Mundo Gira: Meh episode of a love story involving 2 brothers, a woman and a Mexican legend. 5.5/10
Leonard Betts: Disgusting and funny all at once as an EMT doctor shows signs of regenerative abilities. 8/10
Never Again: It's either weird or funny but an episode with a tattoo voiced by Jodie Foster who wants to kill is...neat. 7.5/10
Memento Mori: Along with One Breath as one of the best X-Files episodes ever as we discover Scully's medical condition and Mulder's search for an answer. 10/10
Kaddish: Back to meh status as the agents investigate a murdered Jew seemingly brought back from the dead. 6.5/10
Unrequited: Cool episode of a Vietnam vet capable of invisibility hunting down military officials. 8/10

Tempus Fugit: Part 1 of one of their best two-parters as Max Fenig from Season 1's "Fallen Angel" is killed during a plane crash with a possible UFO and military interference. 9.5/10
Max: Part 2 as the hunt for Max's "proof" continues. Intense crash sequence. 9.5/10
Synchrony: Iffy but good episode of a time traveller capable of fast-freezing a team of scientists.
Small Potatoes: Hilarious episode of a shape-shifter impregnanting women with tails. Some funny Mulder business. 9/10
Zero Sum: Good mythos episode as Skinner tries to cover up a crime that involved the bees introduced in Herrenvolk. 8/10
Elegy: Creepy episode of a mentally challenged patient and his connection to apparitions of victims just recently killed.
Demons: Intriguing episode of Mulder trying to uncover the circumstances behind Samantha's disappearance. 8.5/10
Gethsemane: Great finale as Scully seemingly betrays Mulder and his faith and life is rocked by a terrible truth. Big cliffhanger. 9/10

Overall, season 4 is similar to season 3 as some of the best episodes of the entire show's run are inbetween episodes that are just simply good. While a couple miss, more often than not, these episodes are supremely entertaining and evidence of a show still in its stride.

Buffy's weakest season (I think), but it's still Buffy 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ok, so I've been a fan of Buffy for a while now, but I've only recently begun buying and watching the show in boxed sets. So far, I own seasons 1-5 and I saw seasons 6 and 7 on TV a while back (I'll buy them soon). I've watched each season that I own at least twice, and I've watched the first three seasons at least four times each.

Season 2 is my favorite. Seasons 1, 3, and 5 are also very strong (5 seems to be unpopular, though). Season 6 is fairly good, and I like seasons 7 and 4 least. Keep in mind this is my own personal rating, and that I like the whole series. These rankings are just for comparing Buffy seasons to each other.

Good things about season 4:
*Buffy is maturing and learning to be an adult in a convincing way.
*Willow's character goes through a lot, and she changes and develops a great deal over the course of the season.
*The final episode is a bizarre impressionistic train-of-thought rollercoaster that is very confusing. However, it goes a long way in demonstrating the true nature of every Buffy character and features references to many great novels and movies (especially Apocolypse Now/ Heart of Darkness).
*The Big Bad is intimidating, smart, and has a reasonably strong motivation for his actions. Adam is less obviously "evil" than Angelus, the Master, or The First, but he's still not as deep or interesting as the Mayor or Faith.
*"Hush" was a genuinely scary episode. It was a very good micro-horror movie, and horror movies are rarely "very good!"
*Riley's character wound up being more interesting than I expected.
*Xander's character becomes deeper. He finds a role in the group that goes way farther than comic relief.
*Anya and Spike turn into real characters and remain as interesting and likeable fixtures in the show for the following seasons.
*Oz leaves (I didn't find him very interesting), and a more interesting character, Tara, moves in.

Bad things about season 4:
*Some episodes feel like random fluff. The main plot of the season doesn't go anywhere, the main dilemma of the episode comes across as stilted and silly, and the actors feel like they're just repeating lines.
*There is almost no primary plot line for the season as a whole. The Big Bad shows up late in the season, and the lesser villains up until then are barely enough to keep things interesting.
*Riley's character (I think) starts out very weak. Marc Blucas didn't seem to be doing a very good acting job at first. Late in the season and in season 5 he does much better. I took a while to get to like Angel's character in seasons 1 and 2, but I eventually accepted him. I had no issue with the acting. With Riley, it took me a while to even consider him much of a character at all.
*The Initiative was interesting when it was menacing and mysterious. Things just got sillier and "cheap Sci-Fi original movie" feeling. The soldiers went from using real-looking guns and actual Tasers to some very silly costume-store looking lightening guns. I think that the makeup jobs on Adam and his minion Forrest were a little too colorful-looking and not all that scary.
*I know Giles was bothered by being unemployed and that he struggled with feeling useless, but his character just didn't go anywhere beyond that. He was much more interesting in other seasons.

And I just can't make up my mind about some things:
*Spike's little behavior-modification brain implant bothers me a bit. It's kinda silly, but James Marsters actually does a good job making it convincing, and it allows everyone to get to know Spike a bit better.
*The final battle was both really awesome and a bit cheesy. Part of it was because Adam looks a little silly and pulls some guns out of nowhere in a way that would make the Transformers laugh. But, the battle-royal between soldiers and demons is pretty cool, and the way in which Adam is defeated was more interesting than just blowing him up with a big bomb like the the Scoobies did to the Mayor.

In summary:
Though a whole lot happened in this season in terms of character development and personal drama for the characters, the supernatural problems faced by Buffy and the gang were not as frightening or interesting as in other seasons. Some episodes are still excellent, but many are far weaker than even the worst episodes of previous seasons. Season 5 wound up being a major relief for me because it felt like a return to the stronger plot-driven episodes of seasons 1-3. Season 4 didn't measure up to other Buffy seasons in my book, but the weakest season in a really great series is still well worth my money.

Good Season, No Missing Episodes 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My review is simple. I just received my copy of this season and "Anasazi" the episode that many claim is missing, is included on Disc 6 and plays without difficulty. For any non-fans out there, I will put in my two cents and say that The X-Files is a good show and as most of the reviews below state, this is a pretty good season. If you're looking for great science-fiction, here it is, just make sure to start with the first season (as if that wasn't obvious anyway).

Missing Episode 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've read here that only Amazon.com sold or still sells the season with the last episode missing, I just want to let people know that I bought this season at Best Buy a couple months ago and the season finale is missing. I was very frustrated. I am going to take it back next week and exchange it. I am going to have them put the new 6th disc in a dvd player to make sure it contains the final episode. Great season, though!
