Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaaaay! 4 out of 5 stars.

WB finishes this series of the Super Friends, it's more of what you saw in Volume One...core team adventures, Wonder Twins adventures, and team-ups between the cores and with special guest heroes (such as Green Lantern, Flash, and the Multi-Cultural Pals). Plus there are PSAs, magic tricks, and crafts. The next set of episodes include the debut (sort of) of the Black Manta and an appearance (REALLLLLLY sort of) by Zorak.

Keep them coming, Warners! We still need World's Greatest, the "Lost" shorts, and the original series (wonder if they are purposely holding back on Wendy and Marvin cause they were fan un-favorites. This IS the same company that released the first Scooby DVD with Scrappy-Doo only last year, and proceeded to avoid his name in the trailer). And the 1968 Filmation Batmans couldn't hurt either.

/Thumbs up for Plastic Man being released in the near future, apparently.
//And if they are adding Ruby-Spears series, how about their Superman too?

Ah right 2 out of 5 stars.

Well these cartoons are more educational then superheroing, I can understand why they did it. They wanted cartoons to educate as well as entertain. I guess it could have been done better. Then again that;s what School House Rock was all about, but then again School House Rock had a better team of animators and recording artists to work on them. These cartoons look like they were done by people who could only draw what the low budget permitted.

Where is the 1973 season? 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this set. It brings back alot of great memories watching this, but Im still waiting on the 1973 season with Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog. Ok, I know it wasnt the best, but thats the one I remember the most watching....Classic....

Volume 2 on January 27th 2008. 4 out of 5 stars.

Warner Home Video has announced that The All-New Super Friends Hour - Season 1, Volume 2 will come to DVD early in 2009. It follows up on this past January's release of Season 1, Volume 1 which introduced Wonder-Twins Zan and Jayna (and space-monkey Gleek).

And it's worth noting that the episodes on this upcoming release were produced prior to the Wonder-Twins-included adventures found on Warner's 2005 release of Super Friends - Volume 2 (it was never precisely clear why the studio titled the release that way...but don't worry about it; just enjoy the cartoons!).

It's worth noting that the back of the box for Warner's recent release of DC Super Heroes: The Filmation Adventures mentions to "Look for All-New Super Friends Hour - The Complete Series"; however our inquiries to the studio about their plans for that brought no response. It's possible that this was a misprint, and that they meant to promote this release instead. The "complete series" title might be coming down the road, but the studio has made only this announcement so far.

The new release with 32 more cartoons will arrive on January 27th. It's a 2-disc set presented in full screen video and with English audio. Pricing wasn't provided, but is expected to clock in at $26.99 SRP. Bonus material was not mentioned on this morning's original announcement, but we *are* expecting at least a few extras to be included. Here's a list of the included episodes, followed by the package art:

* The Invisible Menace/ Initiation/Coming of the Anthropods/River of Doom
* Attack of the Giant Squid/Game of Chicken/The Water Beast/Volcano
* The Collector/Handicap/The Mind Maidens/Alaska Peril
* The Fifty Foot Woman/Cheating/Exploration Earth/Attack of the Killer Bees
* Forbidden Power/Pressure Point/The Lionment/Day of the Rats
* Man Beasts of Xra/Prejudice/Tiny World of Terror/Tibetan Raiders
* Frozen Peril/Dangerous Prank/The Mummy of Nazca/Cable Car Rescue
* The Protector/Stowaways/The Ghost/Rampage

...later...at the Hall of Justice... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I never grew up watching the Superfriends as most of the reviewers have. I do remember catching it in re-runs on weekday afternoons...usually at 3:30...so i never caught it on the Saturday morning line-up. I had always liked the shows...i liked all the versions of SUPERFRIENDS that i have been able to see through the years. The one that sticks out by far is CHALLENGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS. As one reviewer put it, the villains and their over-the-top zeal at everything they do, make the show even more enjoyable. Another thing i like is the narration by Bill Woodson...his voice is heard in every episode as the narrator plus in several episodes, specifically FAIRYTALES OF DOOM on DVD #2, Woodson gives voice to Captain Nemo. That scene takes place inside the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Toyman had created a device that inserted people into fairytales and the Superfriends only had a certain amount of time before they become permanent characters inside the fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk {Hawkman}, Gulliver's Travels {Superman}, and Alice in Wonderland {Wonder Woman}. I love the episode REVENGE ON GORILLA CITY and i also like THE SECRET ORIGINS OF THE SUPERFRIENDS, THE TIME TRAP, INVASION OF THE FEARIANS, and SWAMP OF THE LIVING DEAD. I do however want to clear up something about Flash. Several have noted that he flies...well, in my eyes, he isn't "flying" as Superman would...Flash i think creates enough super-energy to lift himself into the air...especially on the episode when the Fearians and the Legion of Doom trick the Superfriends into changing the atmosphere of the Earth to make it like Venus. In that episode, Captain Cold goes on a freezing spree...Flash defrosts all of the cities which causes the air to become smoggy. In another episode, dealing with an invention called Liquid Light, Bizarro {the backwards version of Superman} dumps it out and it begins to devour everything in it's path. Flash circles around at high speed and it acts as a vaccum and sucks the Liquid Light up and it falls back to the earth "in the form of harmless falling stars" as narrator Bill Woodson explains. Green Lantern's power ring, i think, enables Aquaman and the others to appear to be "flying"...especially in the episode called GIANTS OF DOOM where Captain Cold freezes the regular-size Superfriends and Toyman "airmails" the Superfriends to the planet, Saturn. In that episode, it frequently shows Aquaman up in the air with the rest of them...flying...as with Flash and the others. I liked all of the episodes and i give the entire collection 5 stars. As far as the animation goes, i am aware of the mistakes. There are several...i can't make any excuses for it beyond saying whoever looked over the final cuts before they were aired on Television didn't pay close attention to detail. Outside of those errors that have been talked about, everything else about this series is great. This collection is billed as the First Season but it's the ONLY season...so any newcomers to all things Superfriends, do not look forward to a second season of CHALLENGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS because there won't be one. Another thing about the animation before i conclude the review...this is 1978 animation...i know how superior and technically advanced animation has become since 1978 so there's no comparison...but the lack of superior animation shouldn't dictate what one would watch...at least for me it doesn't.

My 3 and 4 year old love these videos. There are so many episodes to watch and so many different heroes and villians that they never get bored. The only problem is that my husband loves to watch them too.

Two boys' review: Saturday morning cartoons perfect for little boys! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our five-year old and four-year old superhero fans won't be watching the PG and PG-13 movies released this summer -- The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and The Dark Knight (Batman). What can a parent do for little superheroes looking for some wholesome yet exciting action?

This two-volume collection, Challenge of the Super Friends, brings back the fun, simple stories that used to fill Saturday cartoon mornings. Parents can rest easy that heroes and villians are clearly identified. The messages are simple, good triumphs over evil.

Kids over 10 probably won't be as entertained by the simple stories and animation. However, this collection suits well for parents looking for something relatively safe to entertain younger children.

They just don't make 'em like they used to. 5 out of 5 stars.

These cartoons are great. Still fun for kids these days, and not too dark and violent like most superhero cartoons these days.

Very Pleasantly Surprised 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have been guilty of buying up all of the prior Superfriends collections and, sadly, not for their intricate plots or beautiful artwork. No, indeed nostalgia is a powerful motivator in these instances and so I thought when my chronological Superfriends collection led me toward purchasing The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians, the final incarnation of the Superfriends formula.

I came into the set expecting a slightly modified variation of the Legendary Super Powers Show (which was the season before Galactic Guardians by the way); a show that I felt made vast improvements over seasons prior. What I found in Galactic Guardians was a revolution not only in just the realm of the Superfriends, but also what I thought was possible within the heavily restricted realm of Saturday morning cartoons circa 1985.

A closer look at what makes this incarnation vastly superior to prior efforts reveals a cast of individuals who would continue going on producing beautiful DCAU efforts even up through today: Andrea Romano (Batman: Animated series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, JL Unlimited, The Batman) directs the voice talent here and story editor Allan Barnett (The Batman) appears on the roster as well. Clearly this show was the stepping-stone to what would eventually become the DCAU as we know it today. Plus, thanks to reworked character models from none-other than famed comic artist José Luis García-López, the team received a much-needed makeover which coincided with DC comic books at the time.

The writing matured to include much more space-scenarios with (thankfully) an improved scientific understanding throughout. Rather than carbon copy characters in different costumes, for the first time we receive individual personalities, struggles, and conflicts of each of the members of the Justice League of America (which are renamed the Super Powers Team here to better reflect Kenner's corresponding toyline).

The villinans are given their proper due as well and, much to my appreciation, are used to near perfection. The Penguin, Lex Luthor, Brianiac, Darkseide, Felix Faust, The Royal Flush Gang, and even the Scarecrow make wonderful appearances.

The show's writers seemed also to finally have figured out that the only way to balance out a cast as diverse and powerful as the Justice League, separation is a necessity (a technique later mastered in Justice League). Many episodes focus on only one or two members of the Team which allows for far better story arcs and character development. Gone are the Wondertwins (thankfully) and signed on is Cyborg who, like his comic book character, is quite well done and allows the younger set (who know him from Teen Titans) an opportunity for appreciation.

Episodes that stand out are The Fear, whereby for the first time we receive a Superfriends episode with our heroes out of costume and also Bruce Wayne's backstory masterfully told without ever showing a gun onscreen. Death of Superman also comes on strong considering just a few short seasons earlier the word "death" was strictly prohibited. Here it shows up in the very title of one of the episodes which just so happened to be one of the hottest selling comic books of the era.

In conclusion, The Super Powers Team: Galacatic Guardians was perhaps the biggest step in the right direction for the Superfriends franchise possible. While the rest of the sets I purchased for nestolgia, this one earned a place through genuine entertainment value. I can go as far as to say that had the Superfriends show continued to evolve along these lines, Justice League would have eventually resulted even without the stunning vision that was Batman (and Superman) the Animated Series as steppingstones.

An Era of Innocence Slightly Matured 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was looking greatly forward to this set for some time on account of the fact that this is the era of the Superfriends that coincided with Kenner's popular Superpowers Collection of toys. As others have stated, the writing in the show matured a bit over seasons past and seemed to have better figured out how to create situations that required the unique skills of the individual members.

As the bonus features confirm, this season was also noted for its use of specially created ethnic characters to diversify the roster. As such expect a slight overload of Samurai, Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, and El Dorado. Additionally the Wondertwins (and Gleek) make a few slightly out of place appearances. On the positive side this also the season that introduced us to Firestorm; the first Superfriend to truly have a personality.

Like others have said in their reviews, one does begin to miss the Legion of Doom slightly. Darkseid and his brood make up the antagonists in a majority of the episodes here. Although I should mention that we are treated to the redesigned Brainiac (much improved) and Lex Luthor sporting his cybernetic PowerSuit.

In addition to the 16 episodes across 2 discs, the special features included are "Evolution: New Heroes, Viler Villains, and Ethnic Additions", writer commentary of 5 episodes, and my personal favorite "The Super Powers Collection: The Effect of the Toy Industry on the Super Friends" which explains some very interesting history on why so many animated shows in the past failed to have a corresponding toy line.

The episodes themselves are very short (roughly 11 minutes each) which often results in a show that resolves in the tune of 45 seconds or so. The pace is certainly welcomed to the drag-heavy hour-long shows of seasons past but prepare for some seriously quick wrap-ups. Upon hearing the sheer number of restrictions that were placed on the writers, it's amazing this show existed at all. Honestly, once taking into consideration that there could be no real violence, no weapons, no punching, only a few robot enemies on screen at a time (so as not to scare children) the beauty of the writing starts to become clear. We're lucky the Superfriends weren't all just sitting around in a group hug!

Overall, a nice set that is definitely worth the money for the extra features if nothing else. This era marked an interesting time for the Superfriends, especially considering that this really was their last iteration in classic form.

Here is the complete episode list:

1. The Bride of Darkseid (Part 1)
2. The Bride of Darkseid (Part 2)
3. The Wrath of Brainiac
4. Reflections in Crime
5. No Honor Among Super Thieves
6. Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Magic Lamp
7. Case of the Shrinking Super Friends
8. The Mask of Mystery
9. Darkseid's Golden Trap (Part 1)
10. Darkseid's Golden Trap (Part 2)
11. Island of the Dinosoids
12. Uncle Mxyzptlk (Super Brat)
13. The Case of the Dreadful Dolls
14. The Royal Ruse
15. The Village of Lost Souls
16. The Curator

Probably the best of all superman cartoons on DVD 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My 3 1/2 years old son watches this dvd over and over again.

I have bought him all 3 justice league dvd which are the newer version with better color, sound... But, for a 3 years old this does not really seems to matter much since after I got him this DVD I have a hard time playing him the justice league ones.

I highly recommend this one for your kids. They will enjoy this one over and over and over again.

Great content, poor package design 5 out of 5 stars.

I may yet buy this DVD someday, as I always enjoyed the Superfriends series in all variations especially Challenge of the Superfriends where this comes from. I will review the disc itself when I buy it, but for now I just have one question which hopefully people will take notice of when they do buy it. This is a compilation of "Challenge of The Superfriends" episodes, who is the dumb cluck who designed the dvd case with the "Super Friends" logo of the first incarnation of the series which came out in 1973? In my opinion that will confuse customers who buy it here on Amazon.com or anywhere for that matter. Someone should write to the manufacturer, and tell them to ease up on the red dew (I'm being nice here, could have said something stronger) when they design the package for the next disc.

What a Waste of Time and Money 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What a disappointment. I thought this DVD will include episodes with the rest of the Super Friends (GL, Hawkman, Flash, Samurai, Apache Chief and Black Vulcan) Like in the season 1 DVD. Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection) Instead as I start watching this DVD and it only contained episodes with the Wonder Twins, don't get me wrong I Liked the Twins when I was a kid (I Never stopped hating that monkey... like the monkeys in Space Ghost and Speed Racer)but about three hours of them I fed up after a few episodes. Even though in the package's picture some of the other Super Friends can be seen; none of them appear in the DVD. After I bought this one a long time ago, A new DVD was released including the episodes I was looking for in the Season 2 DVD. What a rip off. I bought this DVD, which I Like very much, and I gave the season 2 to my nephew. I couldn't even keep it as a collector's edition, to me it is a waste of room too. Now the Super Powers Team has been released in two different DVD sets Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show - The Complete Series (DC Comics Classic Collection)The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (DC Comics Classic Collection), I do like this ones with some new characters and the Inclusion of the El Dorado (whose English is as pathetic as mine). If you think on buying this DVD Super Friends, Volume Two (DC Comics Classic Collection)better yet... DON'T. Buy this one instead The All-New Superfriends Hour: Season One, Vol. 1 Bye I hope my review was not a waste of your time like this DVD.

United they Stood--indeed 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This Super Friends DVD collection, "United They Stand" was way better than "Attack of the Legion of Doom" for two episodes--"Giants of Doom" and "Secret Origins." It's great to see the REAL JLA foil Luthor and his gang time and time again.

* PLEASE release the whole series on DVD * 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The episode is good... but I really want Warner to release the whole series in a "TV on DVD" format... just like what's happening with Spider-Man -- one series at a time. There's something about classic animation -- 1966-1974 or so... no cartoons/animations evoke the same kind of feelings...

Still Plugging 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While children and collectors will love this 4 episode set, I have to say that it's a little rough for adults to endure in the day and age of Justice League of America and Justice League Unlimited. The plots and concepts of Superfriends are much better suited for younger fans however, and certainly had no toruble holding their interest.

stick with the complete first season of this show!! 1 out of 5 stars.

while not bad,you would really do better sticking with the complete first season ,which is out there to buy!!

3-dis set which contains "Challenge of the Superfriends: United They Stand", "Challenge of the Superfriends: Attack of the Legion of Doom", and "Justice League" (pilot).

Good stuff, especially for JLA comic book fans. Kinda irritating that these 2 series are being released piecemeal (and if you find yourselves buying the Justice League 3-pack you will end up having 2 copies of the Justice League pilot!!!!). Anyway am looking forward to buying the season 1/ complete set of "Challenge of the Superfriends". Plus am hoping that they come out with season/ boxed sets of Justice League as well.
