Fantastic 2008 Christmas present 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have received this fantistic Batman DVD set as a Christmas present.

As a child i used to watch Batman - The animated series on TV, although here in Germany the series was never really appreciated by the audience and, sooner than later, got cancelled.

This DVD box is indeed an investment, a positive one by all means.
Once you have opened the box ( it`s like opening a chess board ) you hold a collector`s book in you hands, listing all the content of 17 discs as well as sketches of the producers !

The discs itslf are held within some sort of vhs-like packaging which , however, is still better than the new digipacks because the discs don`t overlap. Instead you can " turn pages " like you use to with a book and access each of the 17 discs separately.
All in all, the package alone is worth the money spent on this set.

Video transfer is still 4:3 and not 16:9 as I had hoped. However this shouldn`t be an issue at all considering the fact that you buy this DVD collection for entertainement, which it is considering the over 35 hours of Batman animation and the clear and crisp DVD picture quality.
Not to mention the 8 in-depth featurettes and many, many other extras on the never-before released bonus disc.

If you are a Batman animated series fan than buy this collection, especially if you`re not living in the USA, because who knows for how long it will still be available.

Editorial Review:

Warner Brothers' Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) remains a striking, stylized program that helped to revitalize the familiar comic book hero. Drawing on such diverse influences as Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, the Fleischers' Superman cartoons of the early '40s, and contemporary Japanese animation, the filmmakers stress interesting designs and cinematography. The Caped Crusader prowls a sinister, Art Deco-styled world of tall verticals, sharp angles, silhouettes, searchlights, and grid-like shadows cast by window frames. Its visual pizzazz eclipses Filmation's pallid kidvid, The Batman/Superman Hour (CBS, 1968), which ran off and on in various incarnations through 1981. Many of the same artists worked on the Batman animated features (e.g., Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Batman Beyond--The Movie (1999)), which display similar strengths and weaknesses.

Ironically, Batman: The Animated Series looks better in stills than it does in motion. The artists fail to stylize the movements of the characters to match the dramatic settings, as Genndy Tartakovsky and his crew did in Samurai Jack. Batman uses sophisticated computers to combat the well-known villains--the Joker, the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman--as well as some less celebrated baddies: Manbat, Clayface, The Mad Hatter. The bad guys cram a lot of plotting and scheming into each 22-minute episode, but the violence is kept to a broadcast standards minimum.

The Dark Knight's First Knight easily ranks as the most interesting of the extras. Producers Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski recount the genesis of the series, and show their mini-pilot, which is more violent and more fully animated. If the complete episodes had matched the pilot, the series would have been much more exciting. (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, mild grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

The End of an Era 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This set contains the final 29 (one more than the package lists!) episodes of the original "Batman: The Animated Series." After these adventures fans would have to wait a whole three years for new capers set in the animated Gotham, and as the reviews for Volume 4 point out some found those episodes lacking.

But we're talking about the episodes on this set, and there is some strong material here. This set introduces several characters that would go on to play huge roles in the animated Batman mythos. We get the two part introduction of Batgirl (which is made all the more effective by the fact that her alter ego Barbara Gordon has already been introduced). We get another two parter that introduces Ras al Ghul, who makes several more appearances on this volume. And we get the introduction of Scarface, who would go on to be featured in many more episodes and is every bit as interesting as Joker, Two-Face, or Catwoman.

This volume also features some of the most emotionally complex storytelling in the series to date, as well as some genuinely dark and disturbing material. The episode "Read My Lips," which introduces the schizophrenic Scarface, climaxes in a twisted scenario that has a character threatening suicide. Poison Ivy's warped idea of a happy little home in "House and Garden" is chilling. And the episode "Baby Doll" introduces one of the creepiest ideas for a villain yet in a child who literally cannot grow up, and the emotional impact of that is played up to its fullest. Yet these episodes are still entirely appropriate for children, because the truly twisted elements are downplayed and will only be fully understood by adults.

There is also a string of stories involving the supposed reforms of various villains. This allows for further exploration of their motives and desires, and continues the series' hallmarks of treating the "bad guys" with as much care and respect as the heroes.

Unfortunately, the set falls just shy of the dizzying heights achieved by Volume Two. Although the episodes here are still better than some of the early clunkers, there a few that fall short of expectations. "A Bullet For Bullock" spends too much time away from our hero, and "The Terrible Trio" is one of the worst episodes of the series. Luckily, these epsidoes are balanced by absolute joys such as "Harlequinade" (featuring the always entertaining Harley Quinn) and "Trial," in which the villains of Arkham Asylum put Batman on trial for "creating" them.

This set is a must for anyone who enjoyed the previous two volumes. The art style is breathtaking, the voice cast is fantastic, and the storytelling is infinitely more mature than your typical "cartoon show."

Editorial Review:

Gotham City crime czars Scarface and Rupert Thorne battle evil masterminds like the Joker and the Penguin for money power and respect. Kidnappings rise as foe-versus-foe attacks become more vindictive. And just when you thought you knew the good guys from the bad the craziest villains try to go straight triggering one dangerous blowout after another. Amidst all the terror one man walks the fine line between vengeance and justice as often as he balances his crimefighting persona and his billionaire playboy public life. This is the Batman series that introduced a new kind of super hero: cool composed uncompromising. The Best Set 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think this is the best set of Batman the Animated Series episodes. It has several outstanding episodes, with "Almost Got Him"- an ensemble episode with most of the first line villains, "The Man Who Killed Batman"- a funny episode with a little bumbler, The Joker at his funniest and scariest for this series, and a seemingly dead Batman, "Zatanna"- an origin episode, a lot of Harley Quinn, and overall great variety. There are no duds on these discs, and I think this set on the whole explored the villains with the most zest. If you are only buying one packaged set, I would go with this one. But I think the whole series is worth having.

I love this show 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was a kid I would wake up on Saturday morning to watch BATMAN, and I loved it. Now that I'm an adult I love that I'm able to share this great and pioneering series with young people (and just sit and watch it myself). This was a cartoon that did not feel like a cartoon. Each show is like a small movie, and as the series got older the better the animation got, the better the acting got and the better the action an stories. Overall: great fun for kids of all ages!

The End of an Era 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Two years after the end of Batman: The Animated Series, the show was revived as The New Batman Adventures, which encompasses the 24 episodes on this set. By the time the show returned, it had lost a couple of key creative people, and the entire look of the series was reconceived in a more angular fashion. The real life break was mirrored in the series' chronology, meaning these episodes take place 2 years after the events of the last set.

Evening knowing all this, the transition from the last set to this one is jarring. It is not immediately clear why Batgirl is allowed in the Batcave, or why a new Robin, Tim Drake, has replaced Dick Grayson. A couple characters are so radically redesigned it is not clear who they are at first. A few secondary characters have been recast, and in most cases you will miss the original actors.

A lot of fans have expressed a dislike of the new artwork, and which admittedly lacks the charm of the original designs. Some characters - like Batman, Bane, and the now truly scary Scarecrow - look better than ever. Others, like Harley Quinn and Clayface, look basically the same as before. And unfortunately, some characters (Mr. Freeze, the Ventriloquist, and the Mad Hatter spring to mind) look much, much worse. You will adjust to the new look, but not until midway through the set.

These episodes also stray from some of what made the original series so special. More action oriented than before, the show lacks the atmosphere and mood that made the earlier episodes so fascinating. Many of the new villains fall flat, lacking the psychological depth of the original Rogues Gallery. The focus on wham-bam action also leaves less time for character development, a hallmark of the original series.

There are still some great episodes on this disc. The faster pacing and increased action pays off in spades during "Over the Edge," which shows the aftermath of Batgirl's apparent demise. "Old Wounds" is a fascinating exploration of why Dick Grayson quit being Robin (that would have benefited from being two parts). This set also has what is in my opinion the series' best episode, "Mad Love." Recounting Harley Quinn's origin, it has the kind of deliberate pacing and emotional maturity that was so successful on previous sets, as well as career best performances by Mark Hamill and Arleen Sorkin as the Joker and Harley Quinn, respectively.

In fact, the saddest thing about this set is how it ends just as it finds its groove. The last 8 or so episodes are quite strong, and it's a shame this new group of artist and writers weren't given more time to play in this world.

This set has some interesting extras, particularly the Interactive Arkham Asylum (basically a group of featurettes on the main villains). Unfortunately, the customary 4 commentaries have been reduced to 3, with one of them wasted on the absolutely awful episode "Critters." Given the reduced episode count, an increase in extra content would have been welcomed.

Fans of the show should definitely check this set out. It may not be quite as good as the old episodes, but it is still better than 90% of the current crop of action cartoons.

5 stars for the show, not the DVD. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Batman - The Animated Series is one of the best animation shows that aired during the 90s. This DVD provides the first 5 episodes of the First Season. I have listed my reviews for the episodes separately, followed by my review of the DVD.

Review of the Episodes:

1. On Leather Wings: A winged bat-like creature is spotted flying above Gotham, stealing chemicals from various pharmaceuticals (recently from Phoenix Pharmaceuticals, where it also injured a night watchman). The Police suspect that it is Batman. To clear his name, Batman goes to the scene of the crime and finds a tape along with a strand of the creature's hair. Having his suspicions, he goes to Dr. March and Dr. Langstrom to ask their opinion on the evidence. However, since the Doctors give him a faulty explanation, Batman is convinced that one of them is the cause for the crimes. Can Batman find out who Man-Bat is and get him in time?

A good start to the series, we get to see how Batman clears his name by going after the Man-Bat. (4/5).

2. Christmas with the Joker - The Joker has escaped from Gotham Asylum during Christmas time. Meanwhile, Dick convinces Bruce to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" to let Bruce get into the holiday spirit. However, the Joker makes all the channels broadcast to his show called "Christmas with the Joker", where he intends to share his Christmas `joy' with the citizens of Gotham. It is up to Batman and Robin to save the people of Gotham while Joker holds Commissioner Gordon, Detective Bullock, and reporter Summer Gleeson hostage.

This is a little different, but still a good episode where we get to see Batman and Robin in action. The highlights of this show are the scenes where Batman and Robin save the people on the train and when they go to the Laffco Toy Factory to defeat Joker. (4/5).

3. Nothing to Fear - A new villain called the `Scarecrow' is stealing and vandalizing the University. However, the Scarecrow's intention of robbing the University is not for the money, but for revenge (especially on Dr. Long, the head of the University). It is up to Batman to catch the crook, but will he be able to succeed, knowing that the Scarecrow is making Batman live his darkest fears?

This was another great episode where we get to see Batman confront his darkest fears while trying to catch the Scarecrow, who is putting fear on the citizens of Gotham. (5/5).

4. The Last Laugh - It's April Fools Day and the Joker is back to spread havoc on Gotham. He spreads a laughing gas through the city, and people who inhale it start laughing until they become insane. Once again, Batman has to stop the Joker, but as usual the Joker has new tricks up his sleeve.

I loved this episode because it was purely action-based, and kept me at the edge of my seat throughout. The scenes where Batman is trapped underwater, or where he is trying to defeat "Captain Clown" is terrific! (5/5).

5. Pretty Poison - An area of exotic wildflowers is being removed to build the Gotham Penitentiary. There is a woman who is against the destruction of these flowers, and wants to make sure that Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent pay for their crime, as it was them who initiated the project.

The first episode with Poison Ivy in it, this was a good episode, but was a little slow and predictable. It was nevertheless fun to watch Batman fight a female villain for a change. (3.5/5).

Review of the DVD:

Since the official Season Boxed Sets of "Batman - The Animated Series" is now available, it is rather pointless to buy this DVD when you can buy the complete sets with more extras included in them. However, it you are a fan of the show, you can still purchase this DVD, as it contains wonderful episodes containing The Joker, Poison Ivy, and The Scarecrow, to add to your collection. Otherwise, it is better to buy all the 3 Volumes of Batman which contain all the episodes of the entire series, instead of this.

Editorial Review:

Taking a cue from the caped crusader's comic book rebirth in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, this 1992 animated series saved the TV Batman from a fate worse than camp and drew an unexpected audience for an afternoon cartoon: adults. The initial five episodes gathered here feature such supervillains as Man-bat, the Scarecrow, and Poison Ivy, but the deliciously demented Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill) steals the show in his two appearances, especially in the twisted "Christmas with the Joke." Escaping Arkham Asylum in a rocket-powered Christmas tree, the clown prince of crime preempts a TV showing of It's a Wonderful Life with his own homicidal holiday treat. It's a solid start to a sleek, stylized, smartly written series that only improved with time. Ages 7 and up. --Sean Axmaker

as good as I remember 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I remember watching the batman animated series every day after I got out of junior high. It was one of the many shows of the early 90's that a young kid could choose from to enjoy for the evening. Frankly batman and a lot of other cartoons during the time didn't stoop to a level where it held it's audiences hand and guided it through everything as if it where helpless like today's cartoons do.

These shows where intelligent and engaging. And after watching 2 of these 4 volumes over the course of the week, I'm reminded of how fortunate we are to have technology that allows us to add such awesome entertainment to our library of video's.

Two thumbs up 5 out of 5 stars.

Batman the animated series is a definate favourite!
I used to watch it every saturday morning, bowl of coco-pops in hand and thoroughly enjoyed it then. I enjoy it just as much now.

It features decent plots which are so lacking in present-day kids cartoons. I also have a renewed appreciation for the animation. Quality of animation is also a missing element in many cartoons these days. But Batman the Animated series has been produced to be just like a Noir Comic, which I love! Beautifully drawn, and perfectly executed.

This is well worth the money!

Great show - weak DVD's ... 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

WB really give the impression that they are totally uninterested in doing anything even remotely special with their valuable Batman properties on DVD.
They know there is a market out there for season boxed-sets of this show (due to repeated requests made to them from the public) - why would they choose to ignore this?
My advice would be to vote with your wallet and wait until WB wake up to themselves and treat this award-winning television show with the respect it fully deserves.

Editorial Review:

Gotham City's dark angel of the night returns in episodes 6-9 of the hit 1992 animated series. Boldly drawn, austerely designed, and animated with fluid motion and dynamic action, these pre-Robin episodes are not necessarily the best the series has to offer (as producer Bruce Timm comments in his introductions, "we were still struggling to find our voice"), but watching the evolution is fascinating. The caped crusader is still treated as an urban myth by the Gotham City population and an outlaw by the police, which is used to its full dramatic potential in the disc highlight "P.O.V.," a Rashomon-styled episode in which three witness paint three very different perspectives of the mysterious Batman. The DVD also features a rematch with the Joker ("Be a Clown") and a short supplemental featurette on the voice cast. --Sean Axmaker

I've got batman in my dvd player 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This DVD is a welcome addition to the growing Batman: TAS DVD collection (keep 'em coming, WB!). The first two episodes, Two-Face Parts I & II, are possibly the darkest episodes yet released on DVD, but also quite good. "It's Never Too Late" is almost a preachy episode about a crime boss needing to change his ways and so on, but the lesson it teaches is a good one for people today, especially those who are into crime and so on. Actually, I'd say there's probably too much of Rupert Thorne on this DVD--not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I wanted to see more supervillains, personally. Lastly, "I've Got Batman in My Basement" is a nice story about kid detectives saving Batman's hide and tangling with the Penguin and his goons. All in all, it's a great DVD. I like the idea of making a box set for this stuff, but individual DVDs are all I can afford right now anyway, so I won't complain about that because it's either this or nothing for me. I say, patience, and enjoy the Batman we have for now. I highly recommend this DVD.

back away from the dvd... 1 out of 5 stars.

Ok, once again warner bros. is trying to get a little cash, by once again releasing a 4 episode set, compared to a 28 episode set. I would normally give all Batman DVDs a 5-star review, but this I cannot. This set contains four episodes....get ready for this....that have already been released on dvd in july!!! Sure it was released in a box set, and for only approximately $35.00 Compared to this $15 dollar set for 4 dollars, the box set is a VERY good deal. Appeasing kids for an hour is a good idea but for the pricing just go rent a dvd. Trust me, you'd be much better buying the box set for only 20 dollars more. But in case you're still wanting to get this dvd, it contains 4 eps. They include: a 2 parter w/ catwoman, an ep. w/ mr. freeze, and an ep. w/ an invisible foe. but believe me, the box set is way cooler (price and design and well, everything wise)

don't buy this!!!! 4 out of 5 stars.

don't buy this because it has already come out! buy Batman the animated series volume 1 on dvd. it has these four episodes on it. but if you have collected batman: the legend begins, batman:tales of the dark night, batman: out of the shadows then this is good for you! that is why i gave it four stars. and because it has the best of all batman characters catwoman. so buy it!!!!
