Fantastic 2008 Christmas present 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have received this fantistic Batman DVD set as a Christmas present.

As a child i used to watch Batman - The animated series on TV, although here in Germany the series was never really appreciated by the audience and, sooner than later, got cancelled.

This DVD box is indeed an investment, a positive one by all means.
Once you have opened the box ( it`s like opening a chess board ) you hold a collector`s book in you hands, listing all the content of 17 discs as well as sketches of the producers !

The discs itslf are held within some sort of vhs-like packaging which , however, is still better than the new digipacks because the discs don`t overlap. Instead you can " turn pages " like you use to with a book and access each of the 17 discs separately.
All in all, the package alone is worth the money spent on this set.

Video transfer is still 4:3 and not 16:9 as I had hoped. However this shouldn`t be an issue at all considering the fact that you buy this DVD collection for entertainement, which it is considering the over 35 hours of Batman animation and the clear and crisp DVD picture quality.
Not to mention the 8 in-depth featurettes and many, many other extras on the never-before released bonus disc.

If you are a Batman animated series fan than buy this collection, especially if you`re not living in the USA, because who knows for how long it will still be available.

It got me and my girls back into Superhero animations 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My daughter got an old Superfriends DVD from her uncle, and I thought it just was so poor that there had to be something better, so we tried the JLU season one and man...it is great!!! Interesting stories, my kids have seriously seen the "kid's stuff" episode over a dozen times - it is hilarious. The plots are great with story arcs continuing over many episodes, this continuity is what captured my imagination and attention and added to the complexity of the overall experience. The animation is also top-notch with plenty of romance in Green Lantern/Hawk Woman and Batman/Wonder Woman and some rather "twilight zone" types of episodes that help include many aspects and characters of the DC universe.

Very Entertaining 3 out of 5 stars.

I appreciated the animation and most of the story lines presented. However, as a comic book fan of the JLA- I thought this sereies was too focus on the JLA V. Cadmus angle. It all build to one nemesis and the JLA is never that concrete. However, the shows are fun to watch and the new superheroes introduced add flavor and intrigue that the original seven never could have. Beware- some of the episodes-- This little Piggy/ Hawk and Dove are extremely churlish. But others-- Epilogue make up for that. Overall, its a worthwile investment!

Overall, a terrific set of multi-part episodes. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have both the two sets of "Justice League" and the two sets of "Justice League - Unlimited", and of the four, I think the first "Justice League" is my favorite, with the three-part "The Savage Time" being my favorite episode.

However, as much as I like "The Savage Time", there are some glaring historical inaccuracies and technological improbabilities/impossibilities that are hard to overlook without some effort. Still, it's a fun watch.

This season couldnt have been any better! 5 out of 5 stars.

I advice everyone who is a major DC or even if you ar not a fanatic to get the first season of JLA. Extremelly entertaining for all ages. U will not be disapointed.

"Comic Geek's" Dream 5 out of 5 stars.

As a fan of the art, story and legends behind the major figures of the DC comic universe this animated series was a more than competent transition from page to screen. It was a very welcome series to enable one to see familiar characters that have already been seen in movies and tv (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash) as well as those which are just as popular on page but who may not occupy such ready familiarity outside the actual comic book medium (Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl). The art style is very modern and an upward evolution from the first Batman animated series circa 1990s. Themes tend to be a bit mature and not as "sugar coated" as in decades gone by, but this is also a positive modern enhancement for audiences who welcome a "thinking" storyline.

Great Price for an Excellent Series 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The writing was top-notch, funny, and inventive. Many episodes following the villains attempts to disrupt the league. This was a great finale to an excellent series, drawing on even more obscure characters for their perhaps only animated appearance - like Jonah Hex and Miracle Man, for instance. Too bad, Ambush Bug never made it into any - would have been perfect for it.

Great stuff!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I got these DVDs as a birthday present. I have always been a comic book fan and when the shows came out on T.V. I watched when I could. I definitely missed quite a few shows on T.V. and was happy to get the DVDs so I could see what I missed! I'm glad I received these. I thought they were great and I think I may have created another fan because my 3 year old loved watching them with me! I would recommend this set to anyone who is a comic book or animation fan.

A grand tour of the DC universe 5 out of 5 stars.

After nearly a decade of quality cartoons, starting with Batman the Animated Series, continuing through Superman, Batman Beyond and Justice League Bruce Timm and his team use this final season to spotlight some obscure corners of the DC Universe. The 31st Century Legion of Superheroes, the lost world of the Warlord, the World War II heroics of the Blackhawks all get a chance to shine.

The series also includes commentary on their first season of JLU which they did not have time to include in the first set.

All in all a class act, a first rate DVD set and a must have for any comic fan.

A Good Batman experience 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Batman Beyond Season 2 was enjoyable to watch. Although if you are expecting a Bruce Wayne type of Batman then you may be a little disappointed.

I never really got into this show when it was airing in my country of New Zealand, mainly cause they used the stupid title Batman of the future, a dumb name like that can put some people off a show.

It is done by Bruce Timm & co (Batman animated Series Team) so though it is a different show it still has that good story element to it. Legendary Kevin Conroy is also back to play elderly Bruce Wayne.

This version of Batman is set about 50 years later from the previous Batman series where an elderly Bruce Wayne has teamed up with a young hot shot Teenager called Terry McGinnis. Bruce and Terry don't start well after Terry steals the Bat suit to bring justice to the crooks who killed his father. This new Bat suit is choc full of gadgets to help Terry along with a communicator and video link built in so Bruce can keep track of him.

So to rap things up this is a show that enhances your Batman experience, different enough from previous Batmans making it a worth while purchase.

The JLA grew up. It's still kid friendly, but the plot points definitely have appeal for grown ups. Perhaps the best season of one the best animated super hero shows ever. Highly recommended.

As a fan of the Justice League series, I wanted to complete my collection; therefore, purchased the remaining item needed. As such, I take price and rating into consideration whenever I order ANYTHING. I had never purchased a product directly from Amazon and was a little skeptical but thought I would give it a try seeing as they had the best price and above board rating. My product arrived within days of ordering, was factory sealed and in excellent condition. Needless to say, I will be ordering directly from Amazon more often.

WARNING: Not ALL Episodes available on Unbox! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I just ordered "Batman Beyond - The Call: Part 1", and two other episodes through my TiVo. (I did not come to this site.)

I noticed that "Batman Beyond - The Call: Part 2" was NOT listed, but figured that "If all the OTHER episodes are listed, maybe I'll just buy it off the Amazon Unbox page online."

Unbelievably, "Batman Beyond - The Call: Part 2" IS NOT sold via Unbox! If you want the episode you MUST purchase the DVD Boxed set!

While I don't want to see anything other than the episodes that I already purchased, it looks like I NOW have to order the DVD to see the ending of the episode that I already purchased.

I HAVE asked Amazon to credit me for my 3 episode purchases, in order to put it towards the DVD set. BUT, it would have been nice to see a warning first, BEFORE I purchased episodes from a season on Unbox that was NOT complete.

IS THIS A MARKETING TOOL by the Producers of the box set, or a mistake by Amazon? I don't know, but I'm not a "happy camper."

Either way, SOME SORT of notice should appear on THIS PAGE.

Perhaps Amazon will "do the right thing" and credit me, so I can watch an entire story line the way it was meant to be seen.

Phenomenal Batman animated movie! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

40 years into the future of Gotham City, a new advanced Batman is in the hands of Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle) as he helps retired Bruce Wayne (Voice of Kevin Conroy) carry on his legeacy of being Batman and saving the streets from crime. Now The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamil) has returned after being thought for dead for 40 years, he has a new crew of goons to help him commit various crime. Terry is determined to find out what is the secret that brought Joker back from the dead and must try to stop him before he unleashes a diabolical plan.

Splendid animated feature from the popular "Batman Beyond" animated series is a dark and suprisingly violent too. I like how Bruce Timm brings the awesome show in a nifty animated movie that diehard fans will endure, Dean Stockwell and lovely Melissa Joan Hart have supporting voice roles in this movie. The animation is just amazing using some "Akira" influence on the entire futuristic Gotham City and some sexy toon girls like Dana Tan whom is Terry's cute Asian girlfriend. The film does have some good flashback sequences of Batman from the past with Robin and Batgirl defeating Harley Quinn and Joker, the film is quite intense and violent but in this uncut version which shows more blood and some violence that was cut out of the original version, this is a must see for fans.

This DVD contains good extras like a featurette, deleted scenes, animation test, comentary, production notes, trailers to this and other DC animated releases, music video and commentary.

Loved it from the Start 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The day this show premiered, I woke up early in the morning and started flipping channels. I happened to stumble onto this show about 30 seconds in with no idea what I was watching. It became apparent very quickly that I was watching Batman (and I assumed the Animated Series). As the story continued I became to realize what I was watching: The most original, unexpected cartoon of the last 20 years.

I say that because with Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc. (all of whom I love) you know what you are getting are there is little new territory to be explored. However, with Batman Beyond, Paul Dini and Company created something where each week I became genuinely curious as to what was going to happen next.

I hope all of these millions of Americans that are pouring out to see The Dark Knight (an excellent film) give Batman Beyond a chance. I think it is a cartoon that can be enjoyed just as much (if not more) by adults, than children!

The Beginnings of a Legend 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series on TV. I would tape every episode, I had all of the action figures, and if there was a new episode on you better not even try to talk to me until it was over. Little did I know the show I enjoyed so much as a kid was being enjoyed by people of all ages, and would go on to be recognized as one of the definitive screen versions of the character. And rewatching these episodes as an adult, I couldn't agree more.

First off, you cannot really talk about this version of Batman without mentioning the art style. The characters are very stylized (just look at Batman's impossibly square jaw), and the world they inhabit is straight out of the art deco designs of yesteryear. Yet the art direction is so consistant, and the portrayal of these characters so smart and well executed, you cannot help but instantly believe in it. There is also some really impressive animation to be seen on this set, especially given the typically limited television budget. However, there is also some really poor animation on display, depending on which overseas studio was handling a given episode. The quality wouldn't iron itself out until later in the show's run, and unfortunately some of these early episodes are hard to watch because the animation is so distracting.

Another aspect of this show that was ahead of its time is the writing. Here is a show that was designed from the ground up to air on Saturday mornings, with a target audience of children. Yet the writers insisted on writing mature, thoughtful stories that were often adult in their emotional complexity, rightly assuming that kids would be able to follow the narrative even if they couldn't grasp all the nuances. It was this decision that allows people of all ages to watch and enjoy this show, and is the primary reason the show remains popular to this day. Like any good piece of family entertainment, the writers made something they wanted to watch and just remembered to keep the violence and adult content in check.

However, like the animation, the quality of writing fluxates across this volume. The mature characterizations and adult problems seen in episodes like "Two-Face" and "Feat of Clay" have to share disc space with truly poor episodes like "The Last Laugh" and "I've Got Batman in My Basement." Luckily, the good outweighs the bad, but a few episodes of dubious quality keep this set from getting 5 stars.

Sound wise, the show is also excellent. The voice cast is uniformly great, led by Kevin Conroy's definitive take on Batman. He handles the character's dual personalities with ease, and both halves of the whole are convincing. The recurring characters all have distinctive voices (you could close your eyes and have no trouble knowing who's speaking), and even better they act their roles with depth and maturity, rather than the over the top portrayals Saturday morning cartoons are prey to. This keeps the drama believable, and the actors are helped out by an outstanding musical score by Shirley Walker. Using Danny Elfman's work on the Tim Burton films as a starting point, Walker creates a grand orchestral score able to convey pulse pounding excitement or heartache as needed. She also creates distinct and memorable themes for each of the main villains, and her work is just a treat to listen to.

Finally, you can't really talk about this set without at least mentioning the Emmy-winning and fan favorite episode "Heart of Ice." The episode reinvents the previously comical, gimmick based character of Mr. Freeze as a tragic figure, a reimagining so successful that this version of his origin has been incorporated into the comics. I have to say, although I enjoy the episode immensely, it's almost a victim of its own popularity, as it isn't the end-all-be-all some people would make it out to be. But it is definitely the highlight of this set, and easily one of the series' top 5 episodes.

Anyone hankering for more of the Dark Knight's adventures after the most recent film would do well to check this set out. It provides an adult and thoroughly entertaining take on the character without some of the extreme darkness found in the more recent movies. Parents can watch this with their children and both parties will be enchanted. Definitely recommended.
