Thought provoking and well narrated. At times inaccurate but an interesting presentation , nonetheless.

Not biased 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this for my husband who recently became a mason. He really enjoyed it and didn't get the feeling that anyone was taking a side. Great information.

The Mysteries of Freemasonry 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Generally a good balanced view of Freemasonry, with plenty of opinions from several angles and well-known writers, both masonic and non-Masonic, on the Craft.

Unbiased? 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I just watched this and although it is interesting I have to ask myself if it is really unbiased? The majority of opinions come from freemasons themselves. The whole point of this show was to prove all the theories wrong using people who disagree with these theories. Although the narrator does bring up the theories, he does not have any opinions to back them up. The conspiracy theories may be garbage but this show is biased garbage as well. Something seems to be happening to a lot of history channel programs.

Good Intro to a Dark Chapter In History 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 28 people found this review helpful.

The History Channel's documentary on The Inquisition is a good introduction to a dark and gloomy chapter in Western history. The Holy Office of the Inquisition was created by the Pope ostensibly to "save souls" by rooting out heresy and sending unrepentant offenders to a fiery death at the stake. In doing so, it created an enduring legacy of misery and death.

The Inquisition was created in the early 13th century to eliminate the dangerous threat of a number of popular heretical groups such as the Waldensians and the Cathars. The Cathars were virtually exterminated by a papal ordered crusade, but the Church found that in order to truly extinguish the threat to their dominance completely, they needed to create an institution that could investigate and punish anyone found to harbor what the Church deemed to be "false doctrine". Thus was the Inquisition born. Over the course of its 800 year history, the Inquisition was responsible for untold misery and suffering in the name of salvation. Abused by power hungry clerics and abetted by corrupt secular officials, the Inquisition spread throughout Europe and soon not only persecuted suspected heretics, but also Jews, Muslims, and those accused of being witches or necromancers. The story of the Inquisition and its sorid history is long and this documentary cannot encompass all of it, but it does a fair job of highlighting its origins, its motivations, and its single-minded persecution of the so-called "Others" in a Europe that was slowly changing as it entered the modern period and struggling to shed the vestiges of the Middle Ages. The documentary does highlight recent scholarship on the Inquisition and works to dispel some common myths and misconceptions about the use of torture and just how many people were actually executed during its reign.

The History Channel has done a decent job of bringing the history of this shadowy period to life and will certainly point interested individuals to more detailed references on the subject. The legacy of the Inquisition still lingers with us into our own modern age and we could do well to learn from it.

Editorial Review:

Its very name conjures up horrific images of torture, persecution, and corruption of power. We'll unravel the twisted history of "The Inquisition", a special court established by Pope Gregory IX in 1231 to root out heresy. We'll also see why, for the first time ever, the Vatican is conducting its own inquisition into The Inquisition.

Best William Wallace documentary ever screened 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

This is best of all the post-Braveheart documentaries on the life of William Wallace. It combines strong attention to the historical details, with an excellent grasp of the passion that drove Wallace in his own time, and influenced events in Scotland and elsewhere ever since. There is a good balance between narration and talking heads. If you enjoyed Braveheart, and want a straightforward and entertaining way to find out more about the life and legacy of Wallace, then this is for you.

A FINE COMPANION PIECE TO "BRAVEHEART!" 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is a fine program about the true story behind Mel Gibson's criticallly-acclaimed epic "Braveheart." Here, you learn about the true legend of William Wallace, and of the liberties that screenwriter Randall Wallace took with the historical facts while crafting the screenplay. If you're a fan of "Braveheart," or just enjoy historical documentaries, then this is one to own, as it is one of the best out there.
Grade: A

Editorial Review:

The film "Braveheart" brought the name of Scottish hero William Wallace to the world's attention. Now, we disclose the true story of the man who rallied his people in the Scottish Wars of Independence from England. After his capture in 1305 and execution, King Edward I tried to destroy his reputation, but created a martyr instead.

I just happened to see this last night.... 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

(March 9 2007 rebroadcast) I must've miss this the first time around. YES, why hasn't a modern foresnic study been done? There is likely plenty of evidence still in the Borden home, even after 100 years. The re-enactors in this production are just dreadful... Mrs. B is portrayed by a skinny, young-ish woman and the Lizzie actor doesn't even have her red hair and moon face and looks about 20 year old (Lizzie was 32 at the time of the murders), and the Irish maid spits out a couple of words in an attempted British accent. (Bad acting is the fault of the director.) The reenactments aren't done convincingly and the production is sub-standard- far below the usual level of History Channel mysteries. This episode is not worth watching. Please, some production company put together a show that applies modern forensic CSI to what evidence remains in the Borden home and the Fall River historical society has plenty of artifacts to test. Like those hatchets and clothing! Minute, old blood spots will still be intact. Well, I think Lizzie did it, and don't we all? She must've been PMSing! Let's face it this was one dysfunctional family. Lizzie didn't sell her story to Hollywood, give interviews or pen an autobio.

Editorial Review:

Lizzie Borden took an ax, and gave her mother 40 whacks; when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41. Most of us know the grisly rhyme, but not the whole story. Who was Lizzie Borden? Did she really murder her father and stepmother on that muggy morning in August 1892? Or does she stand wrongly accused?

Gladiator 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This DVD is rich in history. Not only does it cover the duration of gladiator games, but the history, weaponry, and some of the most famous. It covers the emperors behind the games, and the evolution of the arenas. I see lots of the film Galdiator taken from the history of the games. Sorry, no mention of Maximus. Sparticus was interesting though.

Good, if you know little about the legend 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This documentary reviews the legend of Robin Hood. In it, there is debate on if Robin Hood was real, who he might have been, and where he actually might have lived. Did he live in Nottinghamshire, where Robin is comingly attached? Or did he live in Barnsdale located in Yorkshire? If you know very little about Robin Hood, then this is a great documentary, and you might not know as much as you think...

Editorial Review:

Although ROBIN HOOD is a much-loved tale that has enchanted countless generations of children there has been little exploration into whether this mythical character actually existed. This History Channel presentation aims to set the record straight offering surprising revelations from the historic time in which tales of a man who stole from the rich to give to the poor emerged.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. decoding the triangle?.......maybe ,or maybe .... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If ever there was a documentary about the Bermuda triangle, this would be it!From the beginning this documentary sets the tone for the rest of the hour plus. From the earliest reports of missing ships of old to missing planes of the present, this one covers it all.I must say I have a bias to this dvd as it really covered in depth the disappearance of flight 19.Every possible theory is covered and explained to great detail. The viewer will be able to follow it through to the end.I would highly recommended this dvd to anyone wanting to begin their exploration of all things un-explainable,hope that made sense!).

Editorial Review:

Since the 15th century, the Bermuda Triangle has mysteriously vanished an untold number of ships, planes and lives with three more known incidents in 2004. Using today's scientific knowledge and investigative techniques, we study the riddle of the Bermuda Triangle. Through computer graphics, highly stylized recreations, and underwater cameras, we will dramatically visualize the accidents as well as investigate the possible causes and explanations. On-camera interviews with both skeptics and believers will help lay out the facts and opinions of the cases. Can the latest science available today finally lay to rest the mysteries of the Triangle?

Before and Besides Roswell 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This reminds me of a similar documentary in which it was asked, "Why is it that all over the world and in many time periods, people have myths or stories about dragons?" This work asks, "People from centuries ago and in very diverse cultures have all seen saucers or unfamiliar circles in the sky.

I love when modern phenomenon are given a history. It legitimates things. I saw a work on Alzheimer's that asked if Shakespeare mentions its traits in one of its plays. Some ask if Abe Lincoln had what we now call Marfan's syndrome. There's a documentary on cataracts that establishes itself by first asking if Manet (or was it Monet?) suffered from the eye malady. In one of Maury Povich's "baby daddy" episodes, he showed an example of heteropaternal hyperfecundity. I read an article that said the Ancient Greeks even knew about such a happening. This documentary taps into that same legitimizing process.

It states many of the standard points. We still don't know how humans made the pyramids, so did they get extraterrestial assistance? In South America, there's that man shaved into a field. Was it a welcoming sign to aliens? This work asks if aliens come up in the Bible. Just as some devout people resent Darwinism, some may resent this discussion. Still, it remains a legitimate question to pose and ponder.

Wearing my gender studies cap, it did stand out to me that all the interviewees here were male (and white now that I think about it). A female narrator reads some of the ancient passages. Still, I wonder about the homogeneity here. The work tacitly gives the suggestion that only the aforementioned group is concerned about alien visits, and that's so not true. The work interviews both skeptics and believers, so viewers across the debate will feel represented.

Editorial Review:

In modern times, the first UFO was reported in 1947. But many people believe that aliens have been among us for thousands of years. And for evidence, they point to certain ancient texts and monuments. Do they, in fact, tell the story of extraterrestrial contact eons ago? Join the worlds leading UFO experts including the authors of the bestselling Alien Identities and Fingerprints of the Gods for an extraordinary investigation that journeys through human history in search of evidence of alien contact. Why do so many structures, from different societies worldwide, seem to point towards the same spot in the skies? What other possible explanation is there for the frequent references to strange flying objects in ancient texts? Do some clues point to the presence of aliens among the ancients themselves? With dramatic re-creations, footage from around the world and inspired scholarship, ANCIENT ALIENS attempts to uncover the truth.

Some Latest Findings. 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a good attempt at the Shroud that had been debunked by Carbon Testing previously and shows that science sometimes does not have the last word. New findings are very convincing and shows that there is more learn than what just one test show. A highly recommended show for both believers and those with an open mind. This is one of History's Channel better attempt at being impartial and fair.

Very interesting and thought provoking 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not sure I agree with everything the program offers up, but it was fascinating to watch. I bought several books after viewing this to fill out my knowledge of the shroud (myth?). I thought this documentary was well made and very professional.

Editorial Review:

The Shroud of Turin has long mystified the world, pitting the faithful against science. Is the ghostly image impressed on a burial cloth truly Jesus? A 1988 radiocarbon test dated it to between 1260 and 1390 A.D. But recent studies question the test's validity, and scientists are still unable to explain how the image got there.
