Editorial Review:

December 12, 1942--an explosion ripped through the hull of a German freighter in the French port of Bordeaux, destroying four blockade runners--German ships that fed the Nazi war machine. Royal Marine Major "Blondie" Hasler had been given the task of halting this flow, for which he devised the "cockle"--a collapsible two-man canoe that carried raiders equipped with limpet mines to the heart of the enemy. We also look at operations in Singapore--an amazing 1,500-mile trip inside Japanese territory.

Editorial Review:

On August 17, 1943, the 8th U.S. Army Air Force launched its first major long-range bombing raids into Nazi Germany's heartland targeting the industrial towns of Regensburg and Schweinfurt. The raid was a crucial test of the Army Air Force's belief that its heavily armed B-17 Flying Fortresses could fight their way through in daylight and defend themselves without fighter escort. But as Luftwaffe fighters swooped in and anti-aircraft guns opened fire, the American theory was proved drastically wrong.

Editorial Review:

During WWI, stalemate on the Western Front produced a new kind of warfare--a network of trenches dug on both sides of the line--and a new breed of soldier fought deep underground using shovels, picks, and explosives. By 1917, the British were staring defeat in the face and focused on a ridge in the Ypres sector of Belgium to breach enemy lines. A network of 19 mines were laid under a ridge by tunnel units--a total of almost one million pounds of explosives. The resulting blast was heard in London!
