Editorial Review:

Just after World War II, Preston Tucker wanted to be the first automaker to introduce an entirely new car, not just a touched-up version of a pre-war model. Tucker was determined to see his vision made real, and he obtained financial backing and set up shop in an old Dodge plant. The car he produced was a wonder. Unlike any other car ever built, the Tucker truly was a new approach to automaking. Every aspect of the vehicle was thought out--every innovation justified. TUCKER tells the compelling story of this ill-fated machine and the man behind it. Get an up-close look at some of the 53 cars that were made before the company folded, and revisit the government investigation that brought the dream to an end--despite finding no evidence of wrong-doing! It's the story of a man who dared to dream the impossible dream and paid dearly for it--and a remarkable auto that might have transformed a nation of car-crazy consumers.

Editorial Review:

No one would have believed that the tinkering of a plumber would turn into the foundation of the world's largest corporation. But it did. David Dunbar Buick invented a process to adhere porcelain to tubs and other bathroom fixtures. But the Scottish immigrant dreamed of making a mark out of the bathroom, and set to work building a car. By 1900, he enlisted the aid of another inventor, Walter Marr, and they built their first vehicle. Their invention attracted the attention of one of Michigan's wealthiest men, William Crapo Durant, the president of the world's largest buggy-building business. As soon as he drove one of Buick's early creations, Durant realized that the days of the horse and buggy were over. He teamed up with Buick, and the two went on to make history. By the thirties, Buicks were regarded as some of the finest cars ever made. From the first Buicks through the birth of General Motors and into history, this is the compelling story of the partnership that eventually became the basis for the largest company in the world.

Editorial Review:

In the early 1950s, Mercedes Benz looked to recapture the racing glory of the years before World War II. To do this, they developed the revolutionary 300 SL, and an automotive legend was born. The 300 SL lost its first race, but that proved to be an exception. Dependable, blazing fast and beautiful, it was a world-beating sensation. But the story of this landmark vehicle really gets interesting with the appearance of a New York businessman who believed that the racecar would be a sales success. He convinced Mercedes to make a street version by ordering 1,000 of the as-yet undeveloped car! But only 1,400 people were willing to buy the radically-styled 300 SL, and Mercedes eventually replaced the design with a more conventional roadster. Footage from the world's great racetracks, interviews with the men who built and drove this legendary vehicle and an up-close look at some perfectly restored 300 SL "Gullwings" highlight this definitive program.

Editorial Review:

Stylish and fast, the 1963 Avanti was the last ditch effort of one of America's greatest carmakers. But despite a host of technological innovations and a design from the legendary Raymond Loewy, the Avanti's $5,000 price tag proved too much for most buyers, and Studebaker went the way of Hudson, Packard and many other famous marques. But the Avanti, miraculously, survived. Over the next three decades, Avanti lovers would keep the dream alive, buying the rights to the groundbreaking auto and producing them on a limited basis for the collector's market. AVANTI tells the remarkable story of this classic car. Meet the devoted buffs who kept the it in production, and get an up-close look at concours-quality examples, from an original 1963 Studebaker model to one of the last Avantis ever built. Discover how Loewy whose other designs include Sky Lab, the Lucky Strike logo and the interior and exterior of Air Force One created the classic design in just a few weeks, and climb behind the wheel for a test drive.

Editorial Review:

The Chrysler Turbine has long been regarded as a bold but misguided chapter in automotive history. Today, the lessons learned on this project are playing a major role in the quest to create an environmentally "clean" car for the 21st century. Ironically, it was emissions problems that ultimately did in Chrylser's original turbine car. While test drivers felt the car had potential, engineers could not make the engine run cleanly enough. Trace the two-decade struggle to do away with the piston engine from the first proposal to the 50 sleek, Ghia-bodied test cars. See rare footage of their development and testing, and hear incredible stories from the engineers who worked on the project. In one case, the turbine's ability to run on any combustible liquid was tested by filling the tank of one car with Tequila and another with perfume. Both drivers got in and drove away! It's a remarkable look at a revolutionary vehicle that may yet write a new chapter in automotive history.

Editorial Review:

Only the Model T and the VW Beetle remained as true to their original design as the Morgan. Originally designed in the fifties, but with roots going back still farther, the Morgan is an anachronism that nevertheless enjoys astonishing success today. Simple and sporty, the Morgan stands out in the sea of high-tech wonders that are churned out by sports car manufacturers today. Built by hand at the rate of some 10 a week in Malvern Link, England, Morgans are the only car made today that still use a wooden body frame! Visit the factory for a revealing, authoritative look at this unique vehicle. Trace the history of the company from its days as one of the leading manufacturers of three-wheelers in the first half of the century to today. See how these remarkable roadsters are made, and hop in for a nostalgic ride that instantly explains why Morgan buyers are willing to be put on a six-year waiting list in order to get their brand-new classic!

Automobiles BMW Coupe: very disappointing! 1 out of 5 stars.

Although the title is promising something else, this DVD is NOT about the famous BMW coupes. One of the most trendsetting coupe ever, the 2000cs, is not even mentioned or shown. This DVD gives a general overview of the history of BMW including their activities related to building airplane engines (during the war!) and motorcycles. Coupes are only mentioned occasionally and shown for not more than 1 or 2 minutes! Technical information is missing completely. So if you are particularly interested in BMW coupes DON'T buy this DVD.

Of limited Appeal 3 out of 5 stars.

I partially agree with what has already been written. This title is badly named and has very little to do with BMW coupes. However it does provide a good general history of the company and all the cars up to about 1970. It does not have any significant technical specs however its still a good starting point for those who arnt experts or something a little different for those that are. Not for everyone but still alot of people will enjoy it and Im glad I bought it.
