An Underrated Effort 4 out of 5 stars.

Though often reviewed as a typical "odd numbered" Star Trek movie (for some reason, the even numbered movies in the series have performed much better than the even numbers), Star Trek: Insurrection is actually a rather strong forte into the Trek universe.
The conflict of this film works on two levels: First, there is the conflict between two races of people (a plot point as old as time but one that, if done right, can be quite effective). Second, there is the conflict between Captain Jean-Luc Picard (and thus his crew) against upper-ranking Federation officials, who want to violate the sacred Prime Directive of the universe. Both of those areas of conflict, acting simultaneously throughout the movie, are surprisingly effective and compelling.
Besides the effectiveness of the main plot, however, this film also (much like the previous First Contact film) contains some interesting and humorous character development. While trying to rescue a persecuted race of people, the crew of the Enterprise investigates a planet on which the effects of aging are reversed. Thus, while the android Data is unaffected, other characters are taken on an interesting hormonal journey: Worf begins acting like a typical (violent!) Klingon youth, Crusher and Troi notice certain, um, body parts firming up, and Geordi LaForge regains the use of his natural eyes.
To conclude, Star Trek: Insurrection, while generally regarded as a sub-par effort, actually breaks the "odd-bad, even-good" chain of Star Trek movies. If you are new to the Star Trek universe and are interested in this movie, I would recommend watching the previous film, First Contact, in order to get a better handle on the Next Generation characters before watching this film. If you thoroughly enjoyed First Contact, this movie (with its action/adventure combined with great human drama and humor) will not disappoint you.

It's a well known fact that there are a lot of Enterprise haters out there. But no matter what you may have heard, this series is not at all as bad as some say it is.
The first season box set is a great collection. You get all of the episodes, along with various episodes with commentary and deleted scenes. You also get a disk with more in-depth special features, such as interview and behind-the-scenes looks that you would expect from a quality box-set.
The first seasons was the producers testing the waters, and they didn't do a half-bad job with it. Star Trek: Enterprise is well worth checking out, and the first season DVD is a great place to start.

Although it is real nice having the set in one package, it is a shame that they did not have the foresight to think we might want to watch them in the order they were numbered, i.e. episode 2 before 3, 3 before 4, 4 before 5, etc. They are on the disks in air date order, which is not the correct order, if you want to watch in actual order, you must juggle between disks. Wait to purchase until the idiots at Paramount get it right. Maybe this is why sales were not so good and went from $129 - $199 per season to less than $40.00 per season.

Season 2 saw the full maturation of the Star Trek franchise. Gone are the awkward feeling-out episodes and the plain bad/boring episodes of the first season (e.g. "Charlie X", although "The Changeling" is pretty bad). Also gone is the awkward broadcast schedule, where uniforms and cast members appeared to change because the shows were broadcast in an apparently random order relative to their filming dates. In full flower is the Star Trek Triumvirate of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy - Spock representing cold logic (the ego?), McCoy emotional humanity (id?), and Kirk balancing the two with action (superego?). The addition of Chekov as the last "main character" of the Original Series crew is also welcome.
With the rise of stories revolving around the Triumvirate, there is an inevitable diminution of secondary character interactions. That's not to say that Scotty, Uhura, et al. are not given ample screen time in some episodes (e.g. Scotty's murder trial in "Wolf in the Fold"), but we don't have many interactions between them - e.g. Sulu and Rand discussing fencing, or Uhura singing in the officer's mess. That's a minor quibble, of course, as the season is rich in fantastic and varies episodes. There are some outright comedies ("I, Mudd" doesn't work, but "Trouble with Tribbles" and "A Piece of the Action" both routinely appear at the tops of lists of favourite episode votes).
Other reviews have listed the episodes for the season, but I will give a partial list of highlights, divided by classic Trek themes:
1. Comedy episodes:
- The Trouble with Tribbles: insatiable purring furballs infest the Enterprise while docked at a space station is disputed space. The Klingons pay a visit and further chaos ensues.
- A Piece of the Action: cultural contamination by a survey ship 100 years easrlier creates a culture based on 1930's Chicago mobs. Kirk and Spock attempt to redirect the course of the planetary evolution. Contains the a memorable line uttered by Mr. Spock in a mob accent: "I'd advise yez to keep dialing" (the phone). In a recent straw poll in the local newspaper, this episode was voted "best Trek episode" of all time.
2. Prime Directive episodes
- The aforementioned A Piece of the Action
- Patterns of Force - an historian recreates Nazi Germany on a planet at war with a neighbour
3. Alien Culture
- Amok Time and Journey to Babel - the former dealing with Vulcan mating rituals, the latter with the Father-Son relationship between Sarek and Spock.
- Friday's Child - the Klingons and Federation fight over mining rights on a pre-technological world
4. Transporter/holodeck/technology malfunction
- Mirror, Mirror - a transporter accident sends Kirk, Uhura, McCoy, and Scotty into an alternate universe where their counterparts are genocidal empire-builders.
5. Threat to all life in the galaxy/universe
- Doomsday Machine - The USS Constellation's crew are killed by a giant superweapon, and Kirk and the Constellation's captain must figure out how to destroy it.
- Obsession - a gaseous entity that eats red blood cells (thus killing its victim) is encountered. We learn that Kirk's first landing party command was destroyed by this same creature.
The final great episode of Season 2 doesn't easily fit into a standard Trek category, and that is "Wolf in the Fold", where Scotty is charged with the multiple murders of women on a shore-leave planet. It was written by Theodore Sturgeon, who also penned "Psycho".
There are extras on this disc, and they are quite good. I would have liked to have seen more text commentaries by the Okudas, and would really like to have heard some audio commentaries by the actors (both Nimoy and Shatner gave good commentaries on the ST films they directed). There are interviews with Nimoy discussing his photography career, Nichelle Nicholls on the origins of Uhura's name, and writer D.C. Fontana on the writing process, for just a few examples. Now that the price of these series have come down to more affordable levels (they were originally $100 each!), they are worth the money to see the stories uninterrupted by ads and uncut for syndication.

3. The show looks fantasic
4. Season 4 had guest stars such as Johnathan Frakes and Brent Spiner

I was skeptical at first. I didn't give this series a chance when it was on TV. however i got the entire DVD series and was blown away. i wish it would have continued. superb acting and storylines detrimented only by their early cancellation. what a loss. buy this now,you will enjoy it (even my wife who is not a scifi addict loved this series)

Average followup to STII:Wrath of Khan. High points: Character development (every key character has something to do in this film), Leonard Nimoy. Low points: Comparatively weak storyline, a weak job by Christopher Lloyd (I guess I am just used to seeing him in the Back to the Future movies). Still worth having in your collection, though, if you like Star Trek.

This movie is the exeption to the odd nnumber Startrek movie curse. If you see Startrek II The Wrath of Kahn, then you need to see this one to finish the entire storyline.

Given that I was essentially pushed into seeing "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" at the theater when it came out, when my son gave me this DVD set for Christmas in 2003 and we watched it together, I found that time, Leonard Nimoy's directing, Nimoy's commentary, and the extra features provided me with a more receptive frame of reference. More to the point, if I set aside the fact that this is not the Star Trek I love--Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek--and watch the film as a science fiction movie, I am able to "enjoy" the movie more. And it doesn't hurt that Christopher Lloyd plays the (now requisite villain in Harve Bennett's new vision of Star Trek), Klingon Commander Kruge.
Besides "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," I have watched "The Search for Spock" the most times. In the final analysis, I would say it is the best non-Gene Roddenberry Star Trek movie. (Please note that I am well aware of the fact that Paramount has "added" Gene Roddenberry's name to this and other Star Trek movies, but both Roddenberry and Bennett/Paramount openly state that Roddenberry's "involvement" was completely ignored). On the other hand, to the degree that Leonard Nimoy understands the character of Mr Spock as intended by Gene Roddenberry, I would argue that it is Leonard Nimoy's influence as the director--and uncredited writer--that is the force that makes "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" more tolerable and watchable. While I cannot say for sure, I suspect it is also due to Leonard Nimoy's direction and writing that all of the characters have well developed roles, which in turn led them to provide some better than usual performances.
Will I watch "Star Trek III - The Search for Spock (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)" again? Yes. Is it a great movie? No; but it is better than average.

I'm a fan, right from the start with Kirk and company. I was annoyed when ST:TNG came out, because I thought, "How could they?" But I gave it a fair chance, and loved it! Next DS9, haven't had the chance yet, but will eventually get to it (wasn't thrilled with the whole "war" premise). When Voyager came into the spotlight, I was skeptical yet again, figuring it couldn't have the real "Star Trek feel" being stuck in space. I didn't even watch it initially. But it is an excellent show too! Now to Enterprise - I swore to myself I'd give it a fair chance the first time around, and watched it religiously and in much anticipation for each coming week. I enjoyed the show while I was watching it, but found it to be hard to follow - especially with the multiple story arcs throughout the last two seasons. Being the devoted fan, I had to have it when it was released on DVD. I only recently opened and viewed each season, episode after episode and let me tell you, watching it in this manner made a lot of sense! I had come to realize how intricate the plots can be, the characters, multi-demensional, and the effects are truly amazing. The writers took a big, bold chance with continuing arcs, and that was a nice nod to the fans. They were not trying to carefully step on eggshells and write individual stories. They were giving a gift to fans, knowing those who were following each week would be the only ones returning for the next installment. Watching one eppy after the next, I was like, "Wow!" that's good writing! The characters were as they should be - newbies in the universe, and not knowing quite how to proceed. They were flawed, made bad (and good, really good) decisions. They learned from their mistakes and experiences, and grew accordingly - but never lost sight of the qualities that Roddenberry had envisioned for future of the human race.

Good, but the Weakest Season in the Series 3 out of 5 stars.

Though an essential part of any true Star Trek collection, the first season of Deep Space Nine isn't fully developed, especially with regards to the characters (Dax, most noticeably). Good, but the series will grow and become something much greater than what is in this particular season, so don't give up if you find that you don't care too much for the early episodes.

When I first heard about the 40th anniversary remastered episodes, I was skeptical. Having seen the original Star Trek series on prime time TV in 1966, 67, & 68, and always liking it better than any of the other Star Trek series that came afterwards, I thought that it would be a huge mistake. I was wrong. These new effects are what Roddenbery would have done had he the budget and technology. They are not out of place; they very much have the feel and flavor of the live-action scenes and mesh perfectly. The live-action scenes themselves are now much sharper, colors more saturated, better contrast. Of course I have the complete series as it was originally broadcast- that is a must and I can't part with them. But the remastered episodes are just as essential. They are the original series episodes with the fine details that they have always deserved- even if it took 40 years to finally finish them. I can't imagine any of the original writers or directors having complaints about these remastered episodes- especially since they are in addition to, and not replacing- the series as it was first produced and broadcast.

As a big fan of the original series I had hoped that with many of the original voices and scriptwriters, this animated series of Star Trek would in essence be the fourth season of the original series. Unfortunately this isn't the case, which I believe is as a result of two main factors. First of all each episode is half the length of the originals, which dramatically reduces the amount of time spent for character and story development. Having watched all the animated episodes, many of them seemed like they rushed though the story. Secondly since this series was aimed at children as apposed to prime time general audiences the stories and themes seemed simplified and less edging, even by 1970's standards.
While an animated format does allow writers more freedom to create much more elaborate science fiction environments and aliens, this was offset in the series by the average level quality of the animation of the time. I'm sure diehard fans will most likely not be put off from buying this series by my review. I'd just want to make sure that fans know what they're getting is not quite the same thing as the original series.
