I loved The Rookies when they were on tv when I was a kid & was so excited to find them on dvd! I loved Sam Melville & Kate Jackson as a couple! Thanks for bringing back the good shows!!!!

WHERE IS THE PILOT film THE ROOKIES? 3 out of 5 stars.

Ok.I know a LOT about this series. So I DO consider myself a kind of expert. First, this DVd set is a re-mastered digitally enhanced edition of uncut (MINUS previews to next week that originally aired!!) 49 minute episodes. That is the good news. The bad news. Where is the original PILOT movie called tHE ROOKIES that ran 75 minutes (no commercials) and featured the same cast (minus Kate Jackson and Gerald S O Laughlin) and featured Darren Mcgavin? It introduced the series and truly was a "pilot". Shame on SONY DVD. Also "missing" are the orignal bumpers that aired during eaach episode featuring a Police Siren "The Rookies will continueafter Station identifaction" and all the previews to next weeks shows.

Now--Here is some information on the series many of you may or may not know. Getting the rest of this series released on home DVD might take...YEARS. Season Two might come out but One episode--titled GFROZEN SMOKE stars John Travolta and for years he kept the episode out of syndication and it was never aired for 25 years until TV land did a once through run of PART of the series several years ago. They STOPPED airing episodes 1/3 throught the second season and no one else airs the series. if we do not get them on home dvd--we cannot get them.

For even more disturbing news--the original Pilot to the series SWAT--was a TWO hour episode of THE ROOKIES aired as BOTH a ROOKIES/SWAT cross over episdoe ONLY ONCE in 1975 during the third season of The Rookies. The episode was NEVER syndicated to reruns with SWAT OR The ROOKIES and is NOT available on the SWAT first Season DVD set (That's right---the fierst episode of SWAT on home DVD--is episode TWO!!) Even more disturbing, The series was the FIRST TV series to feature what is known
as "BLOOD SQUIBS". That is, when people are shot, they BLEED. You don't SEE people bleed a lot when they are shot on almost ALL TV series, its considering "a no no" for network series. You can shoot people but you need to be 'tasteful' and HIDE the blood. On THE ROOKIES, since it was fresh and a new technology (and it was the time of DIRTY HARRY!) they used Blood squibs in the ORIGINAL network versions on ABC TV. When they syndicated the show to VIACOM in the late 70''s 98% (that's almost ALL) of the gunshots and ALL of the blood SQUIB impact shots were REMOVED from the prints for TV, That's right--any print shown in syndication from 1977 to 2004 was a VICAOM print with edited violence. Some episodes were so badlt edited they clocked in at 43 minutes out of 50 minutes and othes made no sense wit the 'action/gunshots" cut out". it was done for marketing reasons so the show could be shown at ANY hour but it made the series virtually unwatchable and UNCUT episodes a RARE COMMODITY!!

SO I anxiously await the release of Seasons two, three and four on DVD. Will they ever be released? And will they include the SWAT 2 hopur pilot, FROZEN SMOKE starrign John Travolta and THE ROOKIES PILOT MOVIE?

3 stars if you didn't grow up with these shows 4 out of 5 stars.

I was a child of the 70s and remembered these shows fondly. I took them VERY seriously at the time. Now they are instant nostalgia and a hoot. I love the bland studio bars and apartments, the lack of much blood after some serious gun fights, the friendly neo-fascist cops who do their duty & then go party. These are the "first" episodes of each show but that is misleading. Most started as 2 hour movies of the week. These are the first of the on going episodes but in most cases the viewer's second helping.

The Rookies-the most social conscious of the group. The street wise cop who grew up in the 'hood with the very naive suburban kid. Nice sentiments here about getting through to gang members excpet that these guys are psuhing 40 when they should be teens & the slum is obviously a Hollywood backlot with lots of newspapers thrown all over it.

Police Woman-good drama, Angie does some nice touches. The show isn't just about her though, a whole unit so it's kinda misleading. That hippuie undercover has on of the oddest faces to grace a TV screen. And I loved the casual traffic driving past a desperate shoot out early on.

SWAT-Now this felt like a pilot. Like most of SWAT's villains, total psychos. Although no one mentions it, they are sniffing alot during the episode so grown up viewers will know that they are all coked up.

Starsky & Hutch-lame plot but good commadarie. Watch for a sexy cameo but Suzanne Sommers. This show was a little more into innuendo but then came...

Charlie's Angels-not a cop show! This one actually isz the first time we'd seen the Angels. Not bad but the whole Doyle as a preacher bit was grating. I remeber them calling this a "jiggle show" but note the lack of the extra large busts we've come to expect nowadays.

I wish they'd have released the "best" ep of each show rather than the "first", now that would be a 5 star DVD!

ROOKIES follows a new class of cadets as they graduate from the sanctity of the police academy and begin a 12-week street patrol. We'll ride shotgun with them as they're paired with veteran Field Training Officers (FTOs) who will challenge, test and tease the new recruits in order to prepare them for the dangerous streets of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and Tampa, Florida. Each of these fresh faced rookies will have to prove that their eight months of training have paid off and that they have what it takes to be a member of the police force. Some will succeed; others won t survive the heat.
