Bigfoot Fundamentals 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a fun DVD to watch. There isn't a lot of new information in the piece, but the fundamentals of this mystery/legend are well represented. Decades after it was shot, I am still floored by the Patterson/Gimlin footage.

Great and fair assessment of the subject matter 4 out of 5 stars.

This documentary, originally aired in 1994 on A&E, was very well-done and was very fair as to its assessments of the Bigfoot Mystery. Luminaries in the Bigfoot field such as the late Dr. Grover Krantz, Peter Byrne, Scott Herriott, Al Hodgson and Roderick Sprague are interviewed about their research and their opinions on the hunt for these elusive creatures. Byrne was running the Bigfoot Research Project at that time out of Parkdale, Oregon, and is shown in the field investigating a sighting. Dr. Krantz is shown in his lab at Washington State University with his footprint casts and his Gigantopithecus model based on the jawbone of the mystery primate. Herriott's video (along with Darryl Owen's) are both shown, as is the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, with narration from Gimlin. Skeptical scientist John Crane is also interviewed about his opinions on the subject. This version is slightly different from the original, with Leonard Nimoy (In Search Of...) as the narrator, and some clips are edited a little differently, but overall it is the same one seen in 1994. It ends in Willow Creek, California during the Bigfoot Daze celebration with different townspeople giving their assessments of the reality of the creature, as well as the cultural influences Bigfoot has had through the years. I do recommend this documentary for anyone's Cryptozoology collection.

This is a well-done production using a lot of imagination with real facts and images. I recently toured Pompeii and felt like I knew the people who died there. This DVD worked well with my Latin students after we studied Pompeii. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Pompeii's history.

EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY 5 out of 5 stars.

Well worth the money, a little bit expensive, but cheaper than A&E price $24.95, thought provoking and unlike most UFO's documentaries doesn't deviate from the subject and offers a wide range of little known information
I definetely recommend it along with the now out of print ?! "OUT OF THE BLUE"

The Bible as a Collection of UFO Reports 4 out of 5 stars.

This DVD presents the old ancient astronauts story in every detail. The Bible for example is looked at as a science book; basically a collection of UFO reports. There's a lot of food for thought here, and facts I never put together. As an example I never knew that when Moses brought down the 10 commandments his hair had turned white and his skin was shiney, as if from radiation burns. This DVD is loaded with unusual and little known UFO facts and theories from ancient times.

Interesting and informative 4 out of 5 stars.

The program does examine well who these people were, why Petra was so successful, and what happened to it. It does so in a very entertaining way and is well worth seeing. My only reservation is that there could have been more detail about the people's way of life and what the remains of Petra actually represented. It is a little unclear about what were tombs and what were not and what the actual layout of the site was.I realise of course that there is still a lot of work going on at the site.

Editorial Review:

It remained hidden behind walls of sheer rock for more than 2,000 years. In 1812, Johann Burckhardt ventured into the Jordanian desert and discovered hundreds of structures stretching for miles along narrow canyons: the ancient city of Petra. Narrated by Leonard Nimoy, ANCIENT MYSTERIES® journeys into the past, unlocking the secrets long held captive behind Jordan's sandstone cliffs. Nearly 200 years after its discovery, archaeologists are still astonished at the ruins of Petra. The city evokes wonder in all who behold it--who were the people who carved these structures into solid rock, and how? Wander through what was once a thriving, sophisticated city and glean insight into the Nabataeans, the ancient people who lived and worked here. What caused their strange disappearance? Interviews with archaeologists and anthropologists and stunning location footage illuminate an incredible account of THE HIDDEN CITY OF PETRA. DVD Features: Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

It was educational- but not to the extent that I really wanted it to be. But it was inexpensive, I do not regret the purchase.

Editorial Review:

What is the Black Death? Where did it come from? Scientists still do not know the origins of this deadly plague. Appearing miraculously in 542 A.D., the devastating outbreak claimed 100 million lives. Winding its way from Egypt, through Asia Minor and into Europe, the devastation lasted 52 years and disappeared as mysteriously as it arrived. Many believed that the plague was sent from God as punishment for the world's sins. How was the cure for the plague finally discovered? Is it still with us today? These are some of the many questions we will explore in this program.

Appealing documentary series. 4 out of 5 stars.
53 of 57 people found this review helpful.

This two disc set, which has recently been reduced in price, contains four episodes from the A & E documentary series: "Ancient Mysteries - Myths and Legends", introduced and narrated by Leonard Nimoy.
All the four episodes are stereophonic and about 45~6 minutes in length, and as usual with A & E product, does not contain sub-titles.
The four episodes are:
Camelot ( 1995 - 45'56" ) Good, but with no mention of Avalon.
The Quest for the Holy Grail ( 1995 - 44'48" ) Good, and actually mentions the bloodline of Christ.
Atlantis: The Lost Civilization ( 1995 - 45'58" ) Very good, but glosses over Atlantis' predecessor Lemuria.
Dragons ( 1997 - 45'28" ) Okay + ; missed mentioning how something this supposedly large and heavier than air could fly... ( Internal gas chambers in their bodies similar to an internal hot air ballon, plus hollow bones to lessen weight ).

...worthwhile for your video library - obviously this title was originally published before dual layer dvd's became the norm....

Editorial Review:

A&E's award-winning "Ancient Mysteries" series travels the world to explore and illuminate the enigmas that continue to defy science and spark our imagination. This collection focuses on the myths and legends that are constant sources of inspiration for fantasy literature and movies, exposing what is known, what is imagined and what is pure speculation and myth. Episodes: Camelot, The Quest for the Holy Grail, Atlantis, Dragons.

No mere tourist tableau - a more serious approach to the history of Venice 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My expectations were low when I purchased this fifty-minute long DVD, dating from 1996. Both the title and the knowledge that Leonard Nimoy would be the narrator led me to suspect a sensationalist Hollywood approach that would postulate that Venice had been built by ancient Egyptians or that aliens had designed St Mark's Cathedral. But, I was so wrong! For, when I saw the face of Professor Albert Ammerman, I knew I would be on safe ground. Other contributors include Frances Clarke (President of the Venice in Peril Fund), Ettore Vio (Proto of St Mark's), Sally Spector ("artist"), and Laura Sabbadin ("historian", although Amazon is silent on any books that this contributor may have written). This is no mere tourist guide to Venice, but rather a good short historical review of the city's origins and development. There are five chapters.

The first part, "Escape into the Water", focuses on the city's genesis in the lagoon with a concentration on archaeology and the technology required to build houses and provide means of livelihood for their inhabitants. There is a welcome discussion about salt-making and the importance of trade. In the second part, "A City is Born", there is a modern look at how the foundations of the buildings were put into place, and how the Istrian marble that rests on top of the timber stakes provides good defence against the eroding waters of the canals - or, at least, they did do prior to the subsidence of the land and the rising of the tides since those days (see comments on part five, below).

In the third part of the programme, "A Glorious Empire", there are the standard references to Venice's success in commerce and trade in the Medieval and Renaissance periods, to Marco Polo, to the Fourth Crusade and the attack on Constantinople.

A few misconceptions may arise in the mind of the less knowledgeable viewer from watching this DVD. For example, the screen will show ice-flows representing the end of the Ice Age, as if this was the sight that would have been seen in the Venetian Lagoon. In addition, the commentary refers to the cathedral on the island of Torcello dating to the year 639, when the camera shows, of course, the present later cathedral that was built on the same site. There are a few strange comments too, such as the Venetian Empire once dominating western civilisation: huh? And a few howlers as well: for example, Nimoy says that horses were never allowed in the city, when there is ample of evidence of their presence up to (and including) the nineteenth century. And Venetian prisons were infamous for torture? Only if you listen to Napoleonic propaganda: rather, Venetian prisons were famous for their humanity and ease. That's not to say that torture never took place, but in the context of other European powers of the time, I would much rather be in prison in Venice than in prison in Madrid or Paris!

There is some consideration given of the Venetian political system, its checks and balances to ensure that no one man or family became dominant. A wry smile crossed my face when I heard Nimoy's apparent surprise at how loyal the Venetians were to their republic and its constitution, when he is a citizen of what is arguably a modern equivalent. The medical, social and cultural benefits to the citizens are fleetingly mentioned, as is the decadence of the eighteenth century. (The fourth chapter is entitled "Decadence and Surrender".)

In the fifth and final part, "Is Venice Sinking?", the effects of the rising waters on the bricks above the level of the Istrian marble are clear to see, and views of the Ca' Da Mosto dramatically show the three-foot difference that has arisen since its initial construction in the thirteenth century. Meanwhile the effects of the 1966 flood are shown in the crypt of St Mark's Cathedral. Plans for floodgates to hold back the waters of the Adriatic from the lagoon are canvassed at the end of the programme, but the threat of global warming does not seem to have instilled a sense of urgency in the proposals.

Alas, there are no extras to this DVD, but I was overall very pleased with its content. It is not the best DVD I have seen on Venice - that honour goes to the four-hour visual feast, "Francesco's Venice", by the BBC - but it is a worthy second-place and is heartily recommended for those wanting a more serious approach to the origins and delights of La Serenissima.

Editorial Review:

A city built in a lagoon. It may sound like a strange concept but that's exactly where Venice was constructed and this A&E presentation takes a look at how and why the Italians did it. The story of Venice's construction is the stuff of legend--with Attila the Hun and his bloodthirsty barbarians forcing the original residents of the city into their precarious habitat after some savage battles across the Italian peninsula. THE MIRACULOUS CANALS OF VENICE takes a look at the city's incredible history while also visiting its modern-day incarnation.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. Before and Besides Roswell 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This reminds me of a similar documentary in which it was asked, "Why is it that all over the world and in many time periods, people have myths or stories about dragons?" This work asks, "People from centuries ago and in very diverse cultures have all seen saucers or unfamiliar circles in the sky.

I love when modern phenomenon are given a history. It legitimates things. I saw a work on Alzheimer's that asked if Shakespeare mentions its traits in one of its plays. Some ask if Abe Lincoln had what we now call Marfan's syndrome. There's a documentary on cataracts that establishes itself by first asking if Manet (or was it Monet?) suffered from the eye malady. In one of Maury Povich's "baby daddy" episodes, he showed an example of heteropaternal hyperfecundity. I read an article that said the Ancient Greeks even knew about such a happening. This documentary taps into that same legitimizing process.

It states many of the standard points. We still don't know how humans made the pyramids, so did they get extraterrestial assistance? In South America, there's that man shaved into a field. Was it a welcoming sign to aliens? This work asks if aliens come up in the Bible. Just as some devout people resent Darwinism, some may resent this discussion. Still, it remains a legitimate question to pose and ponder.

Wearing my gender studies cap, it did stand out to me that all the interviewees here were male (and white now that I think about it). A female narrator reads some of the ancient passages. Still, I wonder about the homogeneity here. The work tacitly gives the suggestion that only the aforementioned group is concerned about alien visits, and that's so not true. The work interviews both skeptics and believers, so viewers across the debate will feel represented.

Editorial Review:

In modern times, the first UFO was reported in 1947. But many people believe that aliens have been among us for thousands of years. And for evidence, they point to certain ancient texts and monuments. Do they, in fact, tell the story of extraterrestrial contact eons ago? Join the worlds leading UFO experts including the authors of the bestselling Alien Identities and Fingerprints of the Gods for an extraordinary investigation that journeys through human history in search of evidence of alien contact. Why do so many structures, from different societies worldwide, seem to point towards the same spot in the skies? What other possible explanation is there for the frequent references to strange flying objects in ancient texts? Do some clues point to the presence of aliens among the ancients themselves? With dramatic re-creations, footage from around the world and inspired scholarship, ANCIENT ALIENS attempts to uncover the truth.
