To bleep or not to bleep... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

First of all, I absolutely love Robot Chicken.

However, the Season 2 DVD set let me down in one way: the only option was uncensored. I found myself not laughing as much. I'm not sure why exactly, but I at least find the censored version to be more entertaining. Hearing the bleeps instead of the words makes me laugh more for some reason. For making uncensored the only option, I had to take away a star, which is a sad thing for me.

Just a little more explanation: It would have been nice if there were a way to have some sort of setting to turn the bleeps on or off, that way those who prefer it uncensored have it and those who prefer it censored have it as well. I can't imagine it would be THAT hard.

That should not stop you from enjoying this though. For any Robot Chicken fan, this is really great to have. More of the greatness from Season 1, and something I have watched many times and will watch many times in the future.

Bawk-bawk-WOW!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Indeed, that is what you will say, if you've never seen Robot Chicken before. On the surface, each episode seems like crudely done stop motion animation--but delve a little deeper. The real magic is in the tightly written (and gloriously gloriously violent!!) episodes that revel in the non-sequitor and the from way way out of left field references you may pick up on. A typical episode has two main running stories that last about 3-5 minutes with a veritable crapload of Laugh-In style gags thrown in. If you are expecting high-brow humor, it will be there, but this show is more akin to the Family Guy with jokes that run the gamit of being surreal and obscure to very crude (fart/vomit/and sex scenes abound). Although I'm not partial to fart jokes, there is a really good skit about what happens when Mikey gets ahold of a pop rocks and soda. My favorite skits: The Great Pumpkin Skit--Linus's reaction shot after he conjures his pumpkin has to be seen to be believed! The Smurf murder mystery--complete with all those annoying Smurfin' references The Bloopers--these can get very out of control! As for extras, each episode has a commentary track to it. In fact, my advice is to watch two or three episodes one day and then watch them again the next day with the commentary playing. It's not exactly revelatory, but Seth and Matt should get their kudos for giving each episode (all 20 of them!) their personal attention. The Pros for this set: deleted scenes for many of the skits, uncensored puppet violence, and a very reasonable price tag (I paid $13 and it was worth every cent!) The Cons: the commentary tracks tend to ramble and not make much sense sometimes; the worst: the censored dialogue--I don't know if the bleeping was intended by Seth and Matt, but I was expecting an uncensored version like what Family Guy gives you: I mean, come one, it would have been worth it to hear Pokemon really going off.....

Editorial Review:

Robot Chicken's finest half hour is more savvy than Spaceballs, more inside than Family Guy: Blue Harvest, and funnier, even, than The Star Wars Holiday Special. This Very Special Episode of Comedy Central's stop-motion animated series parodies and goofs on all things Star Wars, from a disgruntled Empire janitor to an ad for Admiral Ackbar Cereal ("Your tongues can't repel flavor of that magnitude"). Twenty three minutes goes by like the jump to hyperspace with such priceless bits as the collect phone call to Emperor Palpatine from Darth Vadar to inform him of the Death Star's destruction, awkward morning-after pillow talk between Luke and Leia ("That was so wrong"), and George Bush's newfound Jedi powers. Co-creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich and company immerse viewers in the Robot Chicken universe with generous bonus features, including storyboarded deleted scenes (with self-deprecating commentary), behind the scenes footage of animation meetings, and alternate audio takes. Good sport George Lucas, who gave his blessing to this episode, boldly goes where William Shatner went before by voicing himself in a Star Wars convention sketch that concludes with a Lucas-worshiping geek telling his son that meeting his idol was the best day of his life. What about his son's birth? "Not even close," dad replies. But you don't have to have that kind of devotion to Star Wars to be amused by this weather forecast for Cloud City: "Cloudy, followed by clouds." --Donald Liebenson.

Editorial Review:

"Well, all the jokes can't be good, you have to expect that once in awhile," Groucho Marx apologized to the camera in Animal Crackers. Though some of the gags in Robot Chicken's third season lay an egg, creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich have nothing to apologize for, except maybe the moment in the "Half-Assed Christmas Special," in which Charlie Brown asks Snoopy, "Have you seen Linus? He was supposed to walk me to chemo." With its barrage of sight gags and pop culture mash-ups (Rankin/Bass's Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer meets Godfather II when elf Hermey, the aspiring dentist, winds up like Fredo), this ceaselessly-inventive Emmy Award-winning stop-motion animated series is the fastest 10 minutes (without commercials) on television. There is something here to befuddle (if not offend) everyone. Children of the '80s might be unfamiliar with Mister Magoo, just as Baby Boomers may not be acquainted with She-Ra. Still, you don't need to have seen Forrest Gump to be tickled by the sight gag that takes "run, forest, run," literally. For all the sophomoric humor (yes, there will be fart jokes and geysers of plasticine blood), there are transcendent bits of brilliance, such as when Ted Kennedy and porn star Jenna Jameson team up to slay celebrities (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paris Hilton) who have intruded into politics or porn, a goof on If You Give a Mouse a Cookie which somehow descends into vampirism and Earth's destruction, and the Kanye West moment when a Smurf complains, "The king doesn't care about blue people" after a Katrina-like disaster devastates the Smurfs' domain. Robot Chicken continues to attract A-listers who get it, including Ethan Hawke, who reprises his Training Day character as the voice of a rookie monster riding with Godzilla. As befits a series that rewards geek-like obsession, this two-disc set features immersive extras--lively audio commentaries for each episode, video blogs of writer pitches, deleted scenes--that reveal just what makes this Robot tick. --Donald Liebenson

Not a smart choice... 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Let me see if I got this...

this package contains seasons 1 and 2 for $54

Season 1 individually costs $20.49 (New Ships from and sold by Amazon.com)
Season 2 individually costs $17.99 (New Ships from and sold by Amazon.com)
-----------------------------------
TOTAL --------------------->$38.48

You're not getting anything extra for buying this package, except but a higher price if you buy them individually... so what am I'm missing here and where's the advantage of buying this? Not a smart choice to do if you ask me...

Don't buy this 1 out of 5 stars.

Don't buy this, you can just buy seasons 1 and 2 separately on Amazon for $12.99 each.

So $25.98 or over $50 for this set. Hmmmm.

Makes me laugh out loud 4 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed these DVDs. As other reviewers have mentioned, the skits are hit and miss depending on your sense of humor. However, the skits are short so if one skit doesn't work for you it isn't long before another one. A lot of them are laugh out loud funny for me which is not easy for me to find. Be aware much of it is adult humor and not suitable for younger children. Skits include depictions of sex, gory deaths, swearing (mostly bleeped out but it is obvious they are saying 'F**K' or whatever). It is definitely the 'Adult Swim' material it is made for but I really enjoyed it. For those who have not seen the show, it is all done with dolls and stop frame animation so even 'explicit' stuff is not that explicit. I just mean the subject matter is often adult in nature. Some of it is 'bust a gut' funny. I wish the episodes were longer and more of them.
