A good documentary, but buy it for the Bonus Features 5 out of 5 stars.

NBC News Presents Ronald Reagan is an impressive DVD that all Americans can appreciate - even those who opposed Reagan's policies. It features a 41-minute documentary of Reagan's life hosted by Stone Phillips, and I was actually more impressed with the documentary than I expected to be (especially since I don't subscribe to the twice-repeated boast on the back cover hailing NBC News as the most respected name in broadcast journalism). It covers Reagan's childhood years, his acting days, and of course his political career that took him from the Governor's mansion in California to the White House. The NBC folks did put a couple of subtle little jibes in there, but overall it's a professional, quite respectful look at the life of the late 40th president.

The NBC News documentary may get top billing here, but the true heart of this DVD (and the reason it is well worth your money) lies in the Special Features. You don't have to be a Reaganite to appreciate the significance of the historic speeches included here in their entirety: President Reagan's 1981 Inaugural Address, his famous 1987 Berlin speech in which he called upon Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," and his heartfelt Farewell Address in January 1989. I was especially pleased to be able to watch the complete Berlin speech of 1987. Everyone is familiar with President Reagan's "tear down this wall line," but short clips do not place the words - and the complete speech - in their full context. On the other side of the Brandenburg Gate were a large number of East Berliners who had come to hear the speech themselves (although they could not, of course, see the President). President Reagan was addressing his words not just to the Soviets, the West Germans, and the American people, he was speaking directly to East Berliners, as well. The 1981 Inaugural Address is also a fascinating speech, wherein President Reagan lays out his guiding principles on limiting government influence and achieving peace through strength. I cannot help but be drawn to some of the people in the background, however. There is a lot of milling around by camera men, for one thing; there's also the world's most obvious Secret Service agent sticking out like a sore thumb. Most interesting to me, however, is a red-headed young man sitting on about the fourth row. Early on, he keeps bending over into the aisle as if he is battling a stomachache, then a few minutes later a member of the Honor Guard comes up to him, walks him into the background, and seemingly makes him show him his ID, after which point "Opie" disappears.

The remaining bonus features will appeal strongly to my fellow Reaganites. You have "A Day with President Reagan" presented by David Brinkley; this fascinating look at a day in the President's life was made in the first month or two of Reagan's Presidency (before the assassination attempt), and it offers a wonderful look at Reagan's leadership style, commitment to reform the economy, and his personal feelings about beginning the last and most important job of his life. Several features provide an intimate look at Ronald Reagan the man. There is a Dateline feature about a woman who corresponded with Reagan from his acting days all the way up through his Presidency - wonderful glimpses of Reagan's inner thoughts can be found in these letters, and the very fact that he, even after becoming President, continued to correspond with a pen pal and long-time fan says a whole lot about the kind of man Ronald Reagan was. You also get an episode of General Electric Theater, a show Reagan hosted for some eight years. In this particular episode, Reagan himself appears in the drama, playing a former boxer turned manager dealing with an up and coming kid who doesn't realize all his victories are arranged in advance.

The most touching and memorable Bonus Features center around the love affair between Ronald and Nancy Reagan. One discusses and provides a few excerpts from Reagan's love letters to his wife - and he wrote her tons of love letters throughout his life. Then you have a Katie Couric interview with Nancy Reagan on the Reagans' 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. The features conclude with a short but poignant look at the days of national mourning following the death of President Reagan.

Ronald Reagan is, was, and always will be my hero and idol, so I enjoyed this DVD immensely, especially the Bonus Features. Those who opposed Reagan's policies can comfortably watch this DVD to get a picture of Reagan's true self, free of political partialities and biases. And those who are ambivalent toward President Reagan or are too young to really know how much he meant to this country and to the free world can benefit enormously from hearing some of Reagan's most memorable speeches and getting a sense of how he saved America and won the Cold War.

needlessly sensationalized by the network 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

It was plenty annoying to have the tape interrupted every five minutes by the airhead reporter to explain to us what the killer had just said, not only that, but they also have a need to go to their own not-too-bright shrink to further explain things, even though a perfectly competent FBI serial killer expert is doing just fine.

The other thing that adds to the irritation is that the reporter feels a need to REMIND us that the killer remains unemotional on tape (except for a single moment), while attempting to explain why he did what he did.

Hey, NBC, we have eyes, we can see that; we can also see the killer choking back sobs (not once, but twice actually); so we do not need to have you tell us these things. Get it?

Why couldn't you have simply left the FBI head doc Robert Mendoza ask the questions, and allowed this two-bit BTK jerk to explain himself away? What is so complicated about that?
We might have learned something worthwhile--if only you weren't busy salivating and hyping the whole affair up for monetary gain. Do you realize howe pathetic this sort of behavior is? This is exactly why the TV networks come across as such abominable hypocrites.

Maybe one day the tapes will be released in their entirety and we'll be able to get a better picture as to why this sorry character did what he did. What is truly baffling is that there does not appear to be a troubled childhood, no apparent abuse--so says the network dingaling reporter, although I doubt it. Instead of yapping on and on about this guy killing ten people, why not delve into his childhood--and thoroughly? There is (hardly) anything here on it. Why? Are the people at NBC this empty-headed? Most of the mystery to these cold-blooded killer types can be resolved/uncovered by taking a serious look into the childhood.

Having said that, I must add the following: it is going to shake you up to hear and see the anguish experienced by those who lost loved ones at the hands of a pi**ant named Dennis Rader.

Editorial Review:

He committed his horrendous crimes over a 30 year period in Kansas -- but when police finally caught the "BTK Killer" (BTK stands for his killing style: bind torture kill) he was an average guy with a wife and kids. After his arrest NBC News got hold of exclusive videos made of BTK's confessions to a therapist... (WWII In Color)Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. NOT the Michael Curtiz Movie! 1 out of 5 stars.

Please be aware that this is an NBC News documentary released in 1961. It is not the 1952 Michael Curtiz movie by the same name.

We need more like this today 5 out of 5 stars.

As I was born in 1955, I loved this movie. It made me remember our countries strong points are in each other. His life is an insperation to us all to be ourselves. Being 1/6 native american, I realy saw his point on some things. This movie is one of the best about a life and times I have seen, with the exception of Mark Twain. Our country needs more movies like this today. back to what we are and what makes us strong.

The Story Of Will Rogers (Narrated By Bob Hope) 5 out of 5 stars.

Not one of the best documentary on this subject 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Apart from revealing the identity of the famous informer of the Washington Post, in the Watergate investigation, this is not a very good documentary. The narrative style is somehow superficial, lacking a real insight in the matter, almost exclusively concentrating on the character of "deep throat" as if we were looking at a Hollywood star biography, rather than a simple piece of a more complicated and important plot. In the end the documentary focuses on an important yet secondary character of the story. Putting "deep throat" in the center of your "solar system" instead of President Nixon, alters the whole balance of the narration, loosing the proper perspective and therefore the necessary historical depth, making this account of Watergate a sideshow of a sideshow.

TWO THUMBS UP 5 out of 5 stars.

This is another terrific DVD on the life of Pope John Paul II. I have several now and I must say that it is certainly worth the money. If you are a fan of the Pope, go ahead and get this DVD and add it to your collection. This DVD will warm your heart whether you are a Christian or not. John Paul II is a giant of our time and this DVD serves his memory very well.

Not quite what I was looking for ... 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Frankly, I was looking for some of the great coverage of John Paul II's life and papacy that aired on most of the networks during the days they covered his death and funeral. This wasn't it. It was good info. if you're looking to add to your John Paul II collection. But if you're looking for the really insirational stuff about him drawing the largest crowds on earth and his last days ... you'll have to look somewhere else. I guess I could have noticed the dvd's release date too.

Interesting and Inspirational 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I found the main report very interesting. Rarely do you see a jounalist like Stone Phillips report on the life of Jesus Christ. I knew that this would be fair and factual and it did not let me down. I wanted to see how the facts supported what I have always believed. I also enjoyed the additional reports which I found very inspirational. It is so uncommon to see main stream media like NBC News report on the power of faith in our lives. I wish we saw more of this type of reporting.

Very Informative!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This DVD is as informative as they get. I was a bit hesitant to watch this DVD thinking I wouldn't understand anything having not grown up with a Christian faith, but a friend told me that she saw the main feature on Dateline NBC a couple of months ago and that it was captivating and interesting. Boy was she right! I now finally understand why millions of people around the world are enraptured by their savior. I highly recommend!

Bonus Features Galore! 5 out of 5 stars.

WOW!!!!
This DVD has so many interesting features. My favorite was the one called "Living Faith." Its about people who believe that their faith in God helped save their lives. The feature truly helps you understand the depth of their faith and how it truly did change their lives. It's quite inspirational. The main feature, of course, is fascinating as well, especially to anyone who loves history!
