yeah but no buts; funny 5 out of 5 stars.

Contains all 3 seasons, LB-live, LB-abroad, the radio shows and lots of extras -- like some TV spots they did on other shows while developing their ideas.

The shows consist of short skits with storylines that flow over each other, between episodes and series. First season they were still learning how to translate the radio show to TV and which characters were going to work, but still funny. Seasons 2 and 3 are better.

Probably helps if you are familiar with english culture. Lots of sight gags and double entendres. If you like more word-play then Black Adder might be a better selection.

Where The League of Gentlemen is dark-sureal comedy, I think of LB as bright too-real comedy.

Silly, bawdy, brutal, clever, satiric, surreal, lewd and funny 5 out of 5 stars.

Says our dignified narrator and guide, "Britain...Britain...Britain...land of tradition...fish and fries...the changing of the garden...trooping the colours. Have you ever wondered about the people of Britain? Nor have I..."

And with that, Matt Lucas and David Walliams take us into a Britain far removed from Jane Austin. Lucas is short, fat and hairless, something like a pink, soft kewpie doll. Walliams is tall, hirsute (hair suit?) and, depending on the occasion, wolfish or just showing a lot of teeth. They are the creators, writers and performers of Little Britain, a sketch comedy series centered on the lives of a dozen or so worst examples of British human life. Want an obnoxious, trouble-making teen with a thick accent and an excuse for everything? Try out Vicky Pollard. How about the effeminate assistant to the Prime Minister, who invariably finds excuses to fall to his knees directly in front of the man. Or the fat, wheelchair-bound Andy Pipkin, who mumbles and lolls, and is just too lazy to walk. And there's plump Daffyd Thomas, young Welsh lad who dresses in tight, bright polyester and is the only gay in his village...and is determined to keep it that way. And more and more. We visit them often, usually in places like Kelsey Grammar School and St. God's Hospital. Since Lewis and Walliams play all of them (backed up by a small cast of straight-faced actors), the old tradition in Britain of men wearing dresses is alive and well.

There's nothing like it in the United States, and probably never will be. The FCC would have a fit, and so would most U.S. social service agencies. Little Britain is ferociously un-PC. If you think it is terrible taste to make fun of homosexuals, old ladies, the mentally disturbed, the fat, minorities, or any number of other groups (politicians and teenagers, of course, excepted), this is not the show for you. ("Are you fat because you're a lesbian or are you a lesbian because you're fat?") Matt Lucas and David Walliams have created a world (and a series) that is silly, bawdy, brutal, clever, satiric, surreal, lewd and funny. It's best watched in small doses. Little Britain was so popular in Britain that it just about became an empire...Christmas specials, performances for charity, a try at transplanting to America, interviews and awards. Of course, the pecksniffs and self-appointed moral guardians are always on the alert. Said one British critic, "Little Britain has been a vehicle for two rich kids to make themselves into multi-millionaires by mocking the weakest people in Britain. Their targets are almost invariably the easiest, cheapest groups to mock: the disabled, poor, elderly, gay or fat. In one fell swoop, they have demolished protections against mocking the weak that took decades to build up."

Perfectly true. Shame they're so funny.

Editorial Review:

"Britain, Britain, Britain, land of technological achievement. We've had running water for over 10 years, an underground tunnel that links us to Peru, and we invented the cat," narrates Tom Baker gleefully at the beginning of Little Britain, introducing the first hit show for fledgling digital channel BBC3 and the best new British comedy since The League of Gentlemen.

Read our interview with Lucas and Walliams.
In fact, creators and stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams acknowledge a large debt to the League, not only in the gallery of grotesques all performed by the duo, but also in the way in which the familiar sketch-show format is expanded by clever use of locale: not Royston Vasey here, but "Britain" itself in all its perverse splendor: from Darkly Noon, where chavette Vicky Pollard seems all too frighteningly real ("Yeah, but no, but yeah. Shut up!"), to the Welsh village with only one gay, to the council estate where buck-toothed Lou looks after apparently wheelchair-bound Andy ("Yeah, I know"), to Kelsey Grammar School where pupils are baffled and confused by their fusty teacher, and many more besides. It's unashamedly puerile stuff and, as with The Fast Show before it, many sketches rely on a single incident or catchphrase repeated over and over in only slightly different contexts. But it works brilliantly, thanks to the characterizations of Lucas and Walliams, their sharp eye for the eccentricities of modern life, and of course that surreal voiceover from Tom Baker. Another triumph for Auntie Beeb. --Mark Walker

Not as good as the first 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This set (as well as the 2nd) cut out a lot of my favorite characters from the 1st season, and has replaced them with characters who make their mark with unsubtle toilet humor. Vicki manages to be in all the sets, though I don't think she's nearly as good as some of the earlier characters. Fortunately, I enjoy David and Matt's performances enough to keep watching. They are wonderful actors.

Shipping was speedy as well.

Hilarious British Humor 5 out of 5 stars.

We fell in love with this show, couldn't get enough of it, so we bought it. Good price, prompt delivery, good condition. Thanks.

Still hilarious 5 out of 5 stars.

There have been negative reviews, and I had to wonder myself if these guys could maintain what they did in the first two series.

I wonder no more. I think they raised their level yet again, same thing they surprised me with when comparing the second season to the first. Yes, "repetitive" is a fair comment, but I think they retire characters before they become boring. They brought in some new characters here, and in particular I thought David Walliams got funnier. Matt Lucas always was.

So now I have three complete seasons to enjoy over and over again. Life is good.

Still very funny. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After three UK series of this character comedy sketch show, plus a two part "overseas" special, this is the first series of the show set in the USA.

It is a mix of established characters, Americanised versions of UK characters, and entirely new characters. It continues to be very funny and very rude!

New hits are an ex astronaut living on his faded reputation, a foul mouthed schoolgirl and two over macho bodybuilders.

Editorial Review:

Little Britain is the reigning king of UK comedy. Its quirky off-kilter characters have quickly become British national treasures garnering numerous accolades including three BAFTAs (UK equivalent to Emmys) and double gold at the prestigious Rose d'Or of Lucerne (Europe's highest comedy award). With the second season comes a host of new characters as well as returning favorites. Unconvincing transvestite Emily Howard has a new friend Vicky Pollard is still butchering the English language; and an assortment of new oddities are on exhibit including Bubbles De Vere Carol "Computer Says No" Beer and and Harvey Pincher who has an unusually strong attraction to his mother. transvestite. Then there's Andy sitting all day in his wheelchair painstakingly looked after by Lou who has no idea his friend can walk. Little Britain presents the breathtaking debris of modern life in all its glory.Running Time: 180 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY UPC: 794051251923 Manufacturer No: E2519

The Boys are Back 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Fans of Little Britain appreciate any chance to revisit the world of wacky characters created by this amazing comic team. While I must say that this two-part Christmas special may not quite be as fresh and funny as the original series, much like the Ab Fab Christmas specials, there are always a few astoundingly good laughs and the comfort of the familiar.

What's more, there's the star studded Comic Relief version of Little Britain Live. Yes, many of them are stars that aren't quite huge in the U.S. but it's fun to see them try to hold their own with the immensely talented Lucas and Walliams.

ABSOLUTELY worth the money - the funniest yet 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have never seen this duo, get this dvd - it is "the best of" really. You will laugh and laugh. I purchased the entire set, this was included, and am watching it for the 2nd time around. I believe this duo to be the funniest comedy I've ever watched and the best money I've ever spent on dvds. I am sure we will watch it over and over again - just use subtitles if you aren't from the UK, so in the places where they talk really really fast (as part of the comedy), you can understand it all -- especially with "Vicky Pollard". LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!

Laugh out loud funny 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I first heard about these guys in Entertainment Weekly a few years ago so I decided to check season 1 DVD out. I loved them and they seemed to get funnier with each season. A must for any British comedy lovers.
This show has many of the same character they do in their regular show but it's Live.
Great stuff.

They excite my tickle bone!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a long time fan of Matt and David's zany characterizations. I prefer British humor to any other in the world! This DVD was the funniest yet! New material not seen in any of their series' episodes was presented during their expertly timed comic performances. They even included unassuming volunteers from the audience in several of their skits and handled other audience hecklers with great aplomb! I laughed all the way though! I won't spoil the end for you, but it goes out with a great big BANG!

It's superb 5 out of 5 stars.

If you Love Little Britain - or British humor - you won't be disappointed. Full of creativity - and simply hilarious. It is brilliant to see skits performed live and the twists that Matt Lucas and David Walliams have come up with.

Prepare to lose your mind 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In my opinion, The Young Ones especially are absolutely essential viewing. Especially for Americans, as they tend to labour under the impression that the English are all prim and proper. Can you decide if the gentleman is a driving instructor from Johannesburg, or really a vampire? Little Britain does nothing to preserve what is left of your sanity, with material that is often off-colour and off-the-wall.

Those comfortable around "alternative" British humour will like it. Those who have never encountered it before should realize that the jokes are as much in the context and the timing as they are in the situation or the words. These are NOT sitcoms.

As much as I like both the series, I'm only giving this four stars because they simply don't go together. There are much better pairings. I wouldn't suggest waiting for anyone to fix that, though.

Editorial Review:

The third series of the double-Bafta award-winning show, finds Matt Lucas and David Walliams bang on form. Bubbles is back - with some heavyweight competition from the woman who destroyed her marriage; Dudley's mail-order Thai bride arrives, but Ting Tong doesnt look quite as he remembered in the brochure? And there aint no ASBO to keep Vicky Pollard away especially when her gang are "well the best dancers". Lou and Andy get into an awful kerfuffle over boob jobs and slow-drying patios; Florence and Emily tackle the very ladylike problem of facial hair; Dafydds new career as a rent boy proves a hit down the local mine and Anne appears on "Stars in Their Eyes" - as Celine Dion. Sebastian has the Prime Minister over a barrel - so to speak - and Carols new job at a travel agent finds a new computer with the same old response! With Tom Baker still giving great voice-over, Little Britain continues to hit the mark like no other comedy.
