space opera lives 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Thank goodness that a good space opera series is still being made.
They really try to put out a quality show with stargate atlantis.
This series may not be as exciting as season 3 overall but it's still a
good show and well worth watching. I do think it was a mistake to
remove the head of atlantis; the dr. wier character from the show, just as removing Dr. Becket character from the previous series was not the best move in my opinion. Still it takes guts to remove major characters and the Samantha Carter character does a good job at being the bases new leader. She has to let the others do most of the work though as she mainly runs the base. I still loved the show though due to it's overall quality and fine acting so it's worth watching for even non stargate fans who enjoy good sci fi that is very well made.

Stargate Atlantis 5 out of 5 stars.

Must see series! 4 out of 5 stars.

Stargate Atlantis is a great show! The third season is full of surprises and ends in a classic cliffhanger. Can't wait to get season 4! Stargate is a little more realistic than Star Trek - you actually feel like it could be happening now. I love that there is a nice mix of drama and humor - they're really good at poking fun at sci-fi in general.

Another great Atlantis season 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought two sets of these one as a gift and one for myself, both sets worked and great packaging. Fan of SGA since the start and this is worth every penny. I've watched this set at least 6 times since I've purchased it. The menu is a sga true layout with easy access to all functions of the dvd.

Another excellent season but it could have been much better 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The DVD set:
1. The editting is AWESOME. I owned many TV Series DVDs Set and NONE HAVE THE EDITTING OF SGA. The episode goes as a small movie and you can not feel where the commercial breaks were.
2. The art on some of the slim cases does look, like a bad print.
3. The DVDs themselves are great, easy to take and put back in, nice art.
4. The complete case is very slim, so it does not take a lot of space in your library.
5. There is no booklet, and there is a small summary on the back cover of each case volume for the episodes.
6. The menu has a very nice graphic and it is easy to read (unlike season 1)
7. You have scene selection and comments on the episodes.

The story:

I agree with most reviewers that season 3 was weak and most of the stories were boring.
1. The special effects were a step up from previews seasons. Specially the season finale between the beam, the shield, the city going underwater, the city raising to space it was a complete extravaganza and well received by this reviewer.
2. The wraith were not touch upon much and their story felt like it stop on this season.
3. The character of Michael returns but not much happens with it; making you think why bring it up.
4. The replicators were a nice threat. I do not watch SG1, so I was surprised to learn that they were used on that show. Knowing that I do have a complaint of using foes from another show. New Galaxy, New Show there should be NEW THREATS. On the other hand, I saw them as the BORG of the SG universe, of course cuter in this universe. =)
5. I did not like the death of doctor Becket and specially the departure of Dr. Weird. Unlike most reviewers I like her character, she seemed a little bland at times, but a strong leader at best.

Overall an excellent show, but four stars because the writing staff could do better.

The DVD has many features that I did not even know were there and which added to my enjoyment of it. Best SciFi Series 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Series to follow the SG-1 Franchise. This season introduces some new characters, which in turn amps up the action.

Season TWO of an EXCELLENT show 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I saw the movie Stargate but never watched SG-1. I was missing my dose of Sci Fi. I still miss Babylon 5 and the Trek series (not enterprise). SGA is a welcome addition to my library.

Season 2
DVD Set:
1. The discs are great and easy to take them out.
2. Slim type case gives extra room, not like the Buffy, Babylon 5, Lois & Clark to name a few that take a lot of space.
3. THERE ARE SCENE SELECTIONS ON THIS SET. Thank you for that... I hated that season 1 did not have them.
4. All episodes come with a commmentary, excellent.. you can watch it with or without giving you double the pleasure.
5. The menu is much better than in season one. It is easy to read and navigate.
6. The art on the cases and DVD is OK, nothing fancy but it does not look like a bad print like in the Beauty and the Beast series.

THE SERIES.

Like other reviewers I will agree that the cast is much better in season two. I did not like the character played by Rainbow Sun and I still not care for Ronan. All the other characters are great. The deadelus and its captian are a welcomed addition to the series, giving in it a great sense of power in the pegasus galaxy.

All the episodes are great and built momentum, but the final three episodes including the finale are lacking the excitement of season one. The final episode ends with a cliffhanger, that does not (at least to this reviewer) make you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for season three to star. Through the season we watched conflicts within the crew, friends and enemies to be let down at the end.

It is still an excellent show, highly recommended to add to any sci fi library. If you do not have any of the four seasons, buy them in the pack (I did), and at the time was cheaper than individually.

Sit down and enjoy the show.

These dvd's came quickly with only a few marks on them that do not seem to effect the ability or quality of playback. I had enjoyed the shows on TV and will now be able to watch them when I want with a great quality picture for my new TV.

Whew! fixed the packaging problem that they had with the SG1 complete series! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

So Glad that they changed the cases that the dvd's came in from the SG1 series, we ended up putting the SG1 series on a bulk cd spindle to prevent scratching the disks up as that set came in tight cardboard sleeves that rubbed against the disks producing scratches..bummer!!

Now regarding the content of Stargate Atlantis......... ever since hearing Rodney McKay tell Samantha Carter that he always was attracted to DUMB BLONDES (her!) I couldn't wait for more of the witty banter & sarcastic remarks, they really were so unexpected & funny! While the other characters took more time to grow on me, my husband & sons fell right into step from their beloved SG1 series ....onward & upward to Atlantis! Bummer that we have to wait for the next years shows..we live waaaay out in the hills of TN, no TV reception so we exclusively watch DVD's, but as with SG1, you can't go wrong here, (see my review on that)PLUS you get to see your beloved SG1 characters again on "Atlantis" as they pop in & out of the shows as guest stars!

Editorial Review:

There are those who may regard it as old wine in a new bottle, but that doesn't mean that Stargate Atlantis doesn't have something to offer to both newcomers and fans of Stargate SG-1, the franchise from which it evolved. Co-creators and executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, both of whom worked on the earlier show, have concocted an appealing premise for this spin-off, in which the so-called Ancients abandoned Earth millions of years earlier, taking their city (i.e., Atlantis) with them. Now, a new team has gained access (via the Stargate, the "wormhole" our heroes use to travel to different worlds) to the legendary sunken city, where new adventures and deadly new enemies await. Stargate SG-1 stars Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks make appearances in this series premiere, but the focus is on the new characters. Of these, Joe Flanigan excels as the insouciant Major John Sheppard, an Air Force pilot unexpectedly recruited for the new mission because of his preternatural ability to interface with the Ancients' wondrous technology. The new leader is Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), a role that is neither especially well-written nor well-played. The new monster-villains, replacing the trusty old Goa'uld, are the Wraith, whose name is actually cooler than they are; they may eat humans, in addition to being all-powerful (natch), but they tend to come off like refugees from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Overall, the production values and special effects remain top-notch, especially for television, and the story itself is OK. But while Stargate Atlantis is certainly promising, it has a ways to go to equal its predecessor, which remains one of the best-made, most compelling sci-fi programs on television. --Sam Graham

Stargate Atlantis Season 1-3 4 out of 5 stars.

This was almost as good as Stargate SG-1. I just hope the plot don't get stale using the same bad guy all of the time. We have gone four seasons and we are still fighting the same one. I am hoping when the new season startes we will see a change.

Where no Tau'ri has gone before 4 out of 5 stars.

One of the big arcs of the "Stargate SG-1" series was finding the Lost City of the Ancients, also known as Atlantis.

It also turned into fertile fodder for a spinoff series (come on, you KNEW they had to make one eventually) when they actually found the city -- in another galaxy. And though it had a slightly shaky start (much like its parent series) the first three seasons of "Stargate: Atlantis" blossom out into a solid sci-fi series with a legendary city, new alien parasites, and nasty machines from long ago.

At the Antarctic base, Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) has finally figured out the location of Atlantis -- in the Pegasus galaxy. General Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) gives the go-ahead for an exploratory unit to go to Atlantis -- even though they don't have the power to return back to the Milky Way, and will be stranded there.

So Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson) leads an international group of scientists and military to another galaxy, and arrive in the sunken Ancient city of Atlantis. After some initial problems, the ancient city is secured and has risen above the water -- but unfortunately the military unit, including Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), have run afoul of the parasitic, life-sucking alien Wraith, who destroyed the Pegasus Ancients long ago.

And the Pegasus galaxy has plenty of its own dangers -- nanoviruses, spies, life-sucking bugs, cannibal Wraith, a band of vampiric enzyme addicts, telepathic whales, an egomaniac baker, weird Ancient devices, Wraiths transformed into humans, fear machines, a race of hybrid bug monsters, warring ghosts, medieval villages with weapons platforms, and a race of ruthless soldiers pretending to be Amish-like farmers.

The Atlantis base regains contact with Earth, but this may not be enough to save them from the Wraith's attempts to gain control of Atlantis -- and the only Stargate with Earth's coordinates. To make matters worse, they encounter a planet of what seems to be Ancients, only to find that they are in fact a mechanical experiment gone horribly wrong. They all have a jealous hatred of humans -- and are hell-bent on destroying Atlantis...

"Stargate: Atlantis" has an easier introduction than most series, even spinoffs. The whole idea was introduced over a few seasons of "Stargate SG-1," and some of the characters (Weir, Woolsey and McKay) were also recurring characters who annoyed the SG-1 team. And while the first season is a bit bland ("The romancing of the alien priestess? It's very 1967 of you") the storyline hits its stride in the second season.

It has plenty of sci-fi staples -- ugly nasty aliens, tightly wound scientists, little tubular ships, explosions, moral quandaries and a bit of classic-style horror -- just look at Michael's ghastly "experiments." But it doesn't lose its quirky casual sense of humor (Rodney massaging his feet during a conference), or its human side, such as the handling of certain characters who die or vanish.

And the dialogue is pretty great, with lots of one-liners and snappy exchanges, with the occasional pop culture reference ("Lord of the Rings. You know when they light all those signal fires on the mountaintops?"). Most are from Rodney ("I'm arguing with myself about who had an idea first--me or me. I really am petty, aren't I?"), and Sheppard ("It'll be a walk in the park... a very scary park, filled with monsters who are trying to kill me"). But there's humor from everyone ("He put his hand in my forehead! How can you resist that?" "Well, I like to close my eyes and think of England").

One thing Atlantis does have is a high cast turnover, compared to the relatively unchanging cast of the previous series -- Higginson does a pretty good job as the scientist-command but is given too little to do. Flanigan has a nice O'Neillian snap to his performance ("Oh, yeah, the clowns. We fight them too -- entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagens. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending `em in!").

As for the other main cast, David Hewlett is hilarious as the antisocial and ever-exasperated scientist, and Paul McGillion is adorable as a Scottish doctor. And while Rachel Luttrell and Jason Momoa are never quite as endearingly alien as SG-1's Teal'c, they are quite solid as a psychic martial-artist and a rough-edged warrior. Richard Dean Anderson has a few appearances, and his quirky commander O'Neill gets a brilliant starring role in the middle of the third season.

"Stargate Atlantis" loses a few too many cast members, but the storylines and aliens add a fresh dimension to the Stargate universe. A solid spinoff, and all-around excellent science fiction.

This series stands on its own without SG1 5 out of 5 stars.

When I first considered buying the series, Stargate: Atlantis, I thought it would be a knockoff of the SG1 series. It has it similarities but I found it to be spellbinding and a great series in its own right.

The star gate is digital and the entire setup seems more modern that the standard stargate. The crew interact on several occasions with the original cast but the storyline is focused on staying alive in a hostile environment while in another galaxy, the Pegasus system. The life sucking Wraith's want to take Atlantis so they can gate to Earth for a new feeding ground. The players try to survive while unlocking the secrets of Atlantis and the Ancients, all while have a good plot line for each episode, which includes gating to other worlds and meeting new people.

This series might not be as enjoyable to anyone who is not familiar with the SG1 series.

My only problem with the series is that year 2 is not available so I can see how they survived the latest attack in the typical "to be continued" episode.

A note about the pilot, don't buy it if you are going to buy the first year, Its included on the first disk.

I think this series has as much potential as the original series and have no doubt that I will purchase any subsequent years that are released. That's the highest rating I can give any movie, the promise to spend my hard earned money on buying it.

When a secret base, abandoned by the original builders of the Stargates, is found buried in the ice of Antarctica, the newly formed Stargate Atlantis team is born. The team's discovery leads to a daring expeditiion to the distant Pegasus galaxy, where they encounter a primitive human civilization and a sinister new enemy that threatens human life everywhere. The Stargate Atlantis mission is headed by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, a specialist in diplomatic relations. Her political savvy is balanced by the bravado of her military counterpart, Major John Sheppard, a courageous pilot. Rounding out the crew are Lt. Aiden Ford, Sheppard's second-in-command, Dr. Rodney McKay, a clever and quick-witted astrophysicist and Teyla, a beautiful young leader among the primitive alien civilization that the Atlantis team encounters.
