Good season. I was a fan of the hour-long episodes because a lot of the latest season's episodes seem too short. Not a lot of episodes... probably because of the hour-longs and the writers strike.

I just wish there were more commentaries and special features. This DVD set seems to have even less than seasons 2 and 3.

Cause, I mean, without the commentaries and special features I might at well record the season myself and not bother buying the DVDs.

It's from Amazon, what do you expect? 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the most magnificent series I have ever seen in film. It is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive nature series ever attempted. I have watched the entire series 3 separtate times and plan to watch it again soon. I honestly believe that it is something which everyone, everywhere should see at least once in their lifetime. The series says so much about our planet and the life which inhabits it. It is educational and just darn wonderful. The music, the photograpy, the awe inspiring scenes that just take ones breath away have to been seen to be believed.

Planet Earth 5 out of 5 stars.

The DVD "Planet Earth" is a gift to man kind from God. God's creation, so
wonderfully made and well documented and narrated by BBC's David Attenborough.

What a brilliant series!!! Catherine Tate is wonderful and David Tennant continues his reign as my favorite Doctor. They (and Russell T. Davies) will be sorely missed.

Same great series..... 4 out of 5 stars.

I'll admit, I was NEVER a fan of the original Dr Who series. I thought it had some great ideas, but such poor production value (and horrible acting) that it was hard to sit through. What I love about this new show is how Russell Davies haw been able to keep the same great ideas from the original (as to please old fans) and push the special effects through the roof (to make it MUCH more watchable for the casual viewer like myself)! Oh sure it's got it's silly moments...okay sometimes VERY silly moments but I think that was done to make it more accessible to younger viewers and they never seem to get in the way of the great story telling.

Also what's terrific is the casting choices. David Tennant makes the Doctor character classic from his first episode (I'd go out on a limb and say it's like Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones!), and every companion is instantly likeable.

Now, after three seasons of greatness comes this fourth season. If you're a Dr Who fan, purchasing this DVD is a MUST. It again has everything that makes the series great and seems to add some more physical action this time around. If you havent seen the show yet, obviously you have to start with season one (2005).

As I said before this season has the same great elements as the previousa ones (and I love Catherine Tate as the Doctor's new companion), but I have to admit things seemed a bit more typical and by the book this time around. This isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but after the last three seasons, each topping the one before it, I thought the season just felt a bit more redundant. It just didn't WOW me like it did in the previous season (though they did set the bar pretty high). Again, I don't think this is a bad thing at all, just same old great story-telling.

Again, if you're a Dr Who fan: buy it (while the price is still low on Amazon), if your new to the series: start with season one. It's not to be missed!

    Don't Blame A&E 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a brief correction to Vlad48's review, "Wiped Clean by A&E" -- Just to set the record straight, A&E (the releasing agent for this set) is not responsible for bowdlerizing the contents. The programs here are taken from the US distribution versions, not the original BBC masters. These are the versions shown on PBS back in the 1970s, and in America ever since.

I wish A&E had used the original masters, or that the BBC would release its own set, especially with extended commentary etc., as other reviewers wish for. Censorship of any kind sucks, especially with material this classic. I rate it 4, not 5, stars for this reason. All things being equal, however, it's Monty, so what's to cry about for the price? 16 dvds for under $60 is a bargain--it comes out to around ten laughs for every penny spent. Snap 'em up!

Never Gets Old 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Fawlty Towers is one of those British sitcoms that although they haven't a high number of episodes, the quality alone is something to make it a timeless classic. I think the high number of people who wil gladly vouch for how good this sitcom is only expresses the true quality of the comedy and the cast involved. The characters are well defined and the setting is utilised to its full potential. Only 13 episodes were made but managed to gain such a cult following, those 13 episodes were just enough to keep the likes of Basil Fawlty a household name for over 30 years. Only the likes of Del Boy and Rodney have gained such a heightened level of comedic status.

The story is simple, Fawlty Towers is a hotel owned and managed by Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) and his wife sybil (Prunella Scales). Basil is supported by his hotel cleaner and waitress Polly (Connie Booth) and his bellboy and waiter Manuel (Andrew Sachs). The cast blend together brilliantly and have given us some of the funniest TV moments we're ever likely to see in our lifetime. Basil is the typical stressed out middle aged man, he goes on by letting lifes little troubles ware him down. He constantly tries to be the man about the hotel but constantly has his masculinity taken away from him by the scorn of Sybil.

John Cleese has always been a man I've considered as one of my idols, and this sitcom is the reason behind that. The comedy may be very slapstick, politically incorrect and at times very childish. I can't explain it but it all just seems to work in a way that will have you in fits of laughter no matter how many times you watch. The character of Basil is shockingly brilliant, I don't think anyone else could have played the character to such a level like John Cleese has. He is over the top, slick, stupid and physically funny. One of the best episodes that shows Cleese's physical prowess when playing this role is the infamous episode "The Germans" which spawned the line "Don't mention the war." The Hitler impression is something to be witnessed and regardless of whether you find things like that offensive or not, you just have to laugh.

Basil Fawlty is everything we find funny about people who lose their temper. He has his moments of trying to hide such terrible situations from his wife, but because of those attempts at hiding the problems he only manages to make them worse. The best example of this is when Sybil wants some building work done on the hotel, she wants to use a well respected but expensive builder. He wants to have a friend to do it on the cheap but he is anything but respectful. While Sybil is away for a weekend, Basil goes against her wishes and has his friend do it with disastrous consequences. What follows is a hysterical attempt at hiding the tragic building work from his wife by trying to keep her out of the hotel.

It's a fantastic series and I could honestly go on talking about it forever. I have nothing but good things to say about every cast member and their respective characters. John Cleese is a legend and he is one of a kind, he made the character his own and would have been something nobody else could have done. I would recommend this set to anyone with even a decent sense of humour.

Awesome and Beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.

I first saw Blue Planet on the Discovery channel... years ago and I absolutely fell in love with it. It is one of the most beautifully filmed documentaries and I think only Planet Earth (ironically) surpasses it in that beauty. I have also always loved David Attenborough, who has a way of really bringing the majesty of whatever you are watching into your home. This series is educational and beautiful to the point of tears. This is a must for any DVD library and I would highly recommend Planet Earth as well.

A Great Season With Just A Few Slips In Time 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

David Tennant's second season as everybody's favorite Doctor is wonderful. It features some of the best adventures in the revived show's run. While many may miss Billie Piper's Rose, Freema Agyeman is more than sufficient as the Doctor's latest companion, Martha. The duo meet in the season opener (albeit the second show of the actual season), "Smith & Jones." That particular episode gives viewers a dose of creepiness thanks to a blood-sucking villain who's on the run from the Judoon, a rhino-like alien species who patrol the stars looking for baddies.

The rest of the season is filled with plenty of highlights. In particular, the Doctor and Martha face off against witches in "The Shakespeare Code" which actually features William Shakespeare (a theme of bumping into literary legends that has flourished in the series revival). Two excellent two-show arcs also pop up during this season. The Daleks return in "Daleks in Manhattan" and "Evolution of the Daleks" and a new enemy appears in "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood."

The best show of the entire revival is also found in this season of Who. "Blink" is scary, suspenseful and the pinnacle of the creepiness that haunts this entire season. Using a familiar fixture of cemetaries, churches and office buildings, this story will make you look twice (and not blink) at certain statues you come across in everyday life.

With so much excellence running throughout the entire season, you'd think that even the subpar episodes would be brilliant. Unfortunately that isn't so. While "The Lazarus Experiment," "42" and the first episode of a three show arc, "Utopia," are all solid, episodes such as the dull "Gridlock" and the downright goofy "The Last of the Time Lords" actually grate the nerves of fans of the original series. Even the return of Captain Jack can't save the season finale from being something of a disappointment. "The Runaway Bride" also toys with the goofy factor.

Two of the Doctor's classic television villains return this season. One gets a CGI update in the not-so-hot "Gridlock" and the other appears in the three-episode finale (although sharp viewers will recognize his name before he actually appears on screen). Derek Jacobi and John Simm portray this baddie who I'll keep nameless for now, but Simm's portrayal is too over-the-top for me. There's even a very light hint at another of the Doctor's classic foes, but whether or not SHE will ever make a comeback is unknown at this time.

Special features include "Doctor Who Confidential" episodes, Tennant's video diary, deleted scenes, promos, etc. including a fun political endorsement from Sharon Osbourne for a character that viewers will get to know quite well by the end of the season.

Tennant and Agyeman are the glue that keeps this season afloat. While there are a few misses in this season, their performances and the excellence of "Blink" and "The Shakespeare Code" make this a must-have season.

Recommended to fans of both the classic and revived Who series as well as anybody who enjoys action, suspense, comedy and a good dose of horror to boot.

Laugh and cringe, repeat. Dark comedy done right. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Maybe you've watched the U.S. version on NBC and you're wondering if the original TV series is funny, too.

The BBC series is darker, more cringe-inducing and, ultimately, far better than the U.S. series. Two seasons long with a special that serves as the season finale, The Office doesn't have a weak episode. The second season steps up the darker comedy.

The U.S. series is entering its sixth season and "jumped the shark" in season three. And that's the beauty of the original series -- the show ends before it becomes fat, silly and stupid.

The Office is British Tele-Comedy at Its Best. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When it comes to television comedy, The Office is arguably as sublime as Monty Python's Flying Circus and Seinfeld. It succeeds at being hilarious without resorting to punch lines, jokes, or laugh tracks. In a word, the series is superb. Created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the British television comedy series aired on BBC Two in 2001. Filmed in mockumentary style, it chronicles the nine-to-five lives of office employees in the Slough, Berkshire branch of the fictitious Wernham Hogg Paper Company. It was the inspiration for the American version on NBC, The Office - Season One starring Steve Carrell. The show features a theme song, "Handbags and Gladrags," made popular by Rod Stewart in the early 70s.

The Company's office is headed by regional manager, David Brent (Ricky Gervais) and his male assistant, Gareth Keenan (Mackenzie Crook). David Brent is the show's central character, who attempts to win favor with his employees, while unintentionally revealing his social shortcomings and trivial human flaws. The show also follows an office romance between Tim Canterbury (Martin Freeman) with indifferent receptionist Dawn Tinsley (Lucy Davis), who is engaged to a boorish warehousemen, Lee (Joel Beckett). The show's writing is witty and subtle, and the characters are truly a well-drawn bunch. To be sure, Ricky Gervais carries the show in his role of David Brent. When in comes to running a business, Brent thinks of himself as a management maverick, when in fact he is little more than an immature buffoon, who tells humorless jokes and gets himself in trouble whenever he opens his mouth. He is a master at saying exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time. He is an insufferable racist, sexist, and homophobe.

This four disc DVD set includes all 12 episodes from the first and second series, and both parts of the Christmas special. Bonus features include the "How I Made The Office" documentary, deleted scenes, out-takes, a video diary, a Golden Globes featurette, and a music video. Highly recommended.
