Lone Ranger 75th Anniversary set is worth every penny 4 out of 5 stars.

I just received this set this evening and have spent some time going through it. I did not observe any 11-13 minute episodes that have been mentioned in other reviews, the ones I checked appeared to be full-length. There are quite a few 22-23 minute episodes, but there do not appear to be any significant edits to the best of my knowledge. There is some time compression but nothing that I found to be too distracting from what I've observed so far, and I've barely noticed any jumpiness in the picture or any warbling on the sound that sometimes accompanies severe time compression on other releases and TV broadcasts. In fact the episodes look better than any syndicated TV print I've seen. And of course the 25 minute shows look amazing.

The sections immediately following the main title intro that used to say "Return with us now to the thrilling days of yesteryear" do appear to be removed from the episodes I glanced at. There is also a weird insertion of a close-up of the Lone Ranger sitting still on his horse inserted at the point in the main title intro when he's charging up the hill on his horse and the narrator says "...and a hearty hi-yo Silver", then it cuts back to the standard shot of him rearing up on Silver. I don't ever remember that shot being inserted in syndication, I always recall that it was a continuous shot of him riding up the hill and rearing up. It appears in all of the episodes I glanced at. No biggie, but it still struck me as odd.

Only other quibbles I have are that there don't appear to be chapter stops inserted, and the time counter for the episodes continue to accrue; they don't start at 00:00:00 at the beginning of each episode but instead have one continuous running time from the beginning of the first episode to the end of the last episode on the disc. Makes it difficult to figure out each show's running time.

The extras included in this set are plentiful and nicely crafted. The commemorative book in particular has a lot of material to go through. There is a bonus disc featuring some LR cartoons, a Lassie episode with the LR and some radio shows, a Season 1 and 2 episode guide, a 'signed' photo, a vintage comic book reproduction, a vintage ID card, Victory Corps membership kit, Lone Ranger Safety Club postcard, and trading cards.

I was on the fence about this set for the last several days but several reviews here and at the Home Theater Forum (along with the great job Classic Media did on the Sergeant Preston sets I own) convinced me to take the plunge and I'm glad I did. It is a blast seeing these episodes again and reliving some fond memories from my childhood in the process. I hope we get more seasons released from Classic Media, perhaps one next year for the 60th anniversary of the TV show.

Definitely recommended to any Lone Ranger fan! You get a lot of great material for the price.

Cheesy film, lousy DVD, uninspired direction, second rate acting. In other words, a Can't-Miss! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had not seen this film since its theatrical run way back when I was nine years old. And, at the time, I LOVED it. As time passed, I checked in to watch for a DVD release, all the while aware that my recollection of the film had to be idealized in a way that could never live up to the actual product in the here and now.

Yes and no.

Everything else written here by the other reviewers is true. The acting is mediocre at best, even by vets like Lloyd and Robard. The direction lacks any style and swipes nearly every scene from hundreds of hackneyed Westerns that have come before. The music is downright bad and the rhyming narration and title ballad is nearly unbearable. Even the classic William Tell Overture seems poorly executed as the Lone Ranger rides into action. And the DVD from Lion's Gate? Typical poor production of their budget-grade offerings. The soft focus in which the film is executed makes it all the grainier in this format. All that said, still the best ten bucks I have spent in a long time and highly recommended for families, genre fans and anyone who remembers this film and wonders how it holds up.

I was extremely pleased that The Legend of the Lone Ranger spent so much time developing the origin story - nearly the first hour of the 98-minute film passes before Reid ever dons the Ranger mask. My only wish is that the one-dimensional supporting cast, particularly Cavendish and Tonto, had been fleshed out a little during this time.

Much like Remo Williams, this film seems to be a set-up for a franchise that never occured. The remaining time in the film spent on the Lone Ranger's rescue of President Grant and undoing of Cavendish seems only to exist as a vehicle to set us up for a sequel (and even bigger Cavendish confrontation?). Fun cameo characters like Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody are never even utilized (which is a shame with a great actor like Richard Farnsworth essentially wasted). Still, a great rainy afternoon flick with a good guy on a white horse, bad guys in black, and even a damsel (never really in distress, though).

A picky cinemaphile could destroy this film with no effort at all. There's no great message, no great art, not even a great story. But it's pretty good, clean fun and, really, a shame the franchise stalled so early. Here's hoping the upcoming revival is as entertaining and has a little more staying power.

Time compressed........ 2 out of 5 stars.
34 of 36 people found this review helpful.

Why in the world would you want to buy this collection of edited/time compressed episodes. They totally violate my memories of the character. Rhino has normally had a reputation for issuing some of the finest TV programs. This is really below their standards. Don't waste your time or money on this one. I hope that ultimately someone wil issue all the Lone Ranger episodes in their original condition.

Editorial Review:

Grab your mask and six-guns, kids, 'cuz the Lone Ranger's back and better than ever! Once again, the retro-wizards at Rhino have expertly packaged this welcome trip down TV memory lane, serving up six complete 22-minute episodes of the popular shoot-'em-up series, starring Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful sidekick, Tonto. The first two black-and-white episodes (from 1949) are included as bonus features, reminding us of the masked man's origins, and four consecutive color episodes from 1956 show the series at its peak of popularity. The colors have faded a bit (otherwise these shows look great), but the action's still as brisk as ever; this is kid-stuff produced with intelligence and skill, with well-cast villains (including Glenn Strange and General Hospital veteran John Beradino) and punchy stories that will still delight any baby boomers who look back fondly at TV's golden age. --Jeff Shannon

Passable quality Moore shows, horrible serial video 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is just a short review to say the Clayton Moore shows are enjoyable enough, but the Lone Ranger serial is about as poor as you can get. The serial has long been considered lost but turned up in a print with Spanish subtitles. That is the one used here, and it is truly bad video quality and they have enlarged the image to hide the subtitles at the bottom of the print used.

Even at the cheap price of this DVD set, it is isn't worth it. Stay away!

Your best chance to see a great serial, and at a bargain price 5 out of 5 stars.

When Clayton Moore assumed his signature role as The Lone Ranger in 1949, the character had been a fixture on the radio since 1933, played most notably by Earle Graser and then Brace Beemer. (It is actually Beemer's voice, not Moore's, heard calling out "Hi-Yo Silver" at the beginning of the TV episodes.) And Moore himself had starred in a number of other vehicles, most notably the Republic Pictures cliffhanger serials "Perils of Nyoka," "Jesse James Rides Again," "G-Men Never Forget," and "Ghost of Zorro." (The last role led directly to his casting as the OTHER Masked Rider of the Plains.) So, while it is perfectly understandable and unobjectionable that some who are fans only of The Lone Ranger TELEVISION show might look askance at what must be admitted to be a drastically different portrayal, others might well be interested in looking at the earlier, certainly no less authentic incarnations of the character, and particularly this one from the world of cliffhanger serials in which Moore himself first achieved stardom. The 1938 movie serial of "The Lone Ranger" is not only generally regarded as one of the finest examples of the serial form, it also marks an epoch in the developing mythos of the Lone Ranger himself, for it is here, for the first time anywhere, that the story of his mysterious origin was told, being slightly reworked for the radio program only several years later, and then adapted for the first three episodes of the TV show. It is unfortunate that most of the serial exists only in quite poor condition, but as much has been done here as possible to make it viewable (for instance, by replacing the original serial footage where possible with equivalent sequences from the much shorter feature-length version, "Hi-Yo Silver," which has survived in far better condition). Anyone reading reviews of this product probably doesn't need to have Clayton Moore's TV episodes recommended to them, though I certainly will second any such recommendation. I would only like to add that the Lone Ranger movie serial, despite the poor quality of the film master and the differences from the TV version, is likewise very much worth viewing, and that Mill Creek Entertainment has presented it here in the most watchable form that I, at least, have ever seen, and at a really remarkable bargain price, even if the TV episodes were not also included. I think this is a must-have, and a must-see, for any real dyed-in-the-wool Lone Ranger fan.

Why only 18 (of the 28) Lone Rangers in the 2 volumes? 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

According to the articles I've read online,
If you buy Volume 1 & 2, you'll get:
18 of the 28 Lone Ranger stories
All 13 of the Zorro stories.
The way I see it, this leaves them with 10 Lone Rangers and no Zorro stories for a potential Volume 3.
14 Lone Ranger stories per volume would have wrapped things up nicely for both shows.
I can only hope they still put out a 3rd volume anyway, to give us the remaining Lone Ranger stories.
Failing that, I'll feel rather disgruntled about having spent my money on the first two volumes, but it's too early to complain yet.

New Adventures of the Lone Ranger/Zorro Volume 2 4 out of 5 stars.

I remember watching these adventures as a child, and I'm very grateful for their release on DVD. Filmation maintains its high quality standard of mixing great adventure with educational lessons (in this case, facts about the Old West and Mexican/Spanish History). It would be nice if some contemporary cartoons would incorporate more educational and/or life lessons into their format as children continue to need these lessons given to them from sources in addition to the home. Finally, as Western Tales are not very commonplace in today's entertainment world, it's nice to have the adventures of Zorro and The Lone Ranger to relive on DVD.

I have two other DVDs of the Lone Ranger, and this one has two episodes that I had not seen. There is no better western than this series. The respect that is shown to women, the dignity of Jay Silverheels, and the moral high quality of dialog is not to be equalled. You cannot find simple stories with good moral principles with this level of acting, and the intelligent dialog. A must for all ages

The origin of a great American hero 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 36 people found this review helpful.

This three-episode television classic was filmed in 1949 and introduced Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This seminal film details the masked man's origins as a Texas Ranger who was ambushed with five fellow rangers by outlaw Butch Cavendish, the Ranger's recovery with Tonto's help, why he conceals his identity with a mask, how he finds Silver, and their round-up and arrest of the Cavendish gang. Moore and Silverheels were perfect as the two leads in this series and portrayed the characters as no one else could have. They were supported by some of the old-school, venerable character actors of the day such as Glenn Strange, George Lewis, Tris Coffin, George Chesboro, and Walter Sande. The crisp black and white photography stands up well with time and the Lone Ranger "mood music" is a superb, nostalgic accompaniment to the action as the Ranger and Tonto fight for law and order in the early west. Each of the three episodes is wonderfully narrated by way of introduction, and the narration is also used to introduce key plot situations.

Editorial Review:

The Lone Ranger was created for radio in 1933 by George W. Trendle. Starring Clayton Moore as the title character and Jay Silverheels as his faithful companion, Tonto, The Lone Ranger went on to become one of the most popular westerns in history. Clayton Moore passed away in 1999, but he has left us the legacy of a lawman that always shot to wound, not kill, and never sought personal reward for his good deeds. Through Moore's portrayal, The Lone Ranger has become a symbol of individualism and justice that transcends its time and genre. (Black & White, PLUS one color episode from the popular television series.)
