Editorial Review:

Tensions between reluctant superspy Nikita (Peta Wilson) and her shadowy bosses at Section One couldn't be more rocky at the launch of La Femme Nikita's third season, and things definitely go from bad to worse. And it's not just Nikita who's having issues with her boss, Operations (Eugene Robert Glazer), but also Michael (Roy Dupuis), who experiences a major loss of power after being passed over for the Chief Strategist position ("Third Party Ripoff"), and fellow agents Walter (Don Francks) and Birkoff (Matthew Ferguson); the situation gets so bad that at one point, they consider jumping ship ("Slipping Into Darkness"). And if that's not enough complication and intrigue, Michael and Nikita's romantic inclinations finally take root, much to the consternation of Section One and Madeline (Alberta Watson), who attempts to nix their relationship, forcing the pair to meet behind her back ("Playing with Fire"). All this, plus a pair of deadly terrorist siblings ("Threshold of Pain"), and a modeling agency that fronts as a combo brothel/gladiator arena ("Hand to Hand"), adds up to another exciting season.

Season 3's six-disc set includes all 22 episodes, with commentary by Eugene Glazer on two shows--the season opener, "Looking for Michael," on which he's joined by director Jon Cassar, and the finale, "On Borrowed Time," which also features writer/production consultant Peter Lenkov. Glazer and Cassar also offer comments on a 13-minute battery of 10 deleted scenes from various episodes, while Cassar, Lenkov, and executive consultant Joel Surnow (24) are featured on an eight-minute featurette about production designer Rocco Matteo. And lest first-time viewers consider La Femme Nikita a laugh-free show, there's even a three-minute gag reel to lighten the mood. The season 3 set should be the perfect six-course meal to tide over devoted Nikita-ites--until the season 4 set, of course. --Paul Gaita

Gave Up Quickly 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Gave up after 5 episodes. Peta is attractive but too quirky in this role. I also can't stand Roy Dupuis (Micheal), the pretty boy trying to play tough guy. "The Operator's" talking with half a mouth aka Gretta Van Sustern is the final straw. Plots are boring and not up to the standards of other spy thriller shows.

Good Show, Bad DVD 3 out of 5 stars.

5 Stars For THe Show, 2 Stars For The DVD

The show is fantasic, my grip in the review are hte DVD's

I guess this is what happens when you compress the hell out of it...but theres lots of compression issues in these DVD sets. They look bad, if it wasn't for the fuzz on the television, the origional broadcasts looked better than this.

More than a cult/spy-adventure show: A hard look at the realities of relationships mirrored by the microscopic world of Nikita 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First, I want to state that I did not watch Nikita on television, so my comments are limited to my viewing the Season One box set. Second, I find it sad, but not surprising, that recent reviews have panned the show or the dvd quality. In an entertainment world over 10 years later, Nikita lacks the "luster," the "non-stop explosives," and the "mindless CGI effects" that viewers today take for granted. Moreover, since Nikita has a more "cold war" feel to it, I am sure those who didn't live during the cold war or did not learn their history lessons, may find it hard to understand that "terrorism" existed in abundance prior to our country's current activities. Third, like many, I wish the show was in wide screen formate, but if reviewers and buyers read the description (and do a little research), they will learn that the show was not filmed in that formate. Fourth, and most important to me, I take exception to reviews that pan the show for "poor storylines, poor acting, poor production."

Sadly, I purchased the Alias series--which I really like--first, so I found myself dismayed at the "copy cat" nature of Alias. Nikita is truly a much superior show: the writing is tighter; the directing and editing excellent; the themes and story lines are fuller and more realistic; and, perhaps most importantly, the look is genuine--the producers utilized Toronto very convincingly; (I almost always felt like they were really on location, having lived in Europe for three years). Peta Wilson was perfect for the show, her performances were generally outstanding, and over-all, award worthy. While I personally did not care for Roy Dupuis' character, the actor's portrayals should not be confused with the character. And Roy's portrayals are very commendable. Together, Roy and Peta had great "chemistry"--as they say. Thus, I can state, with all due respect, that in my opinion the show does in fact have great story lines, superb acting, and amazing production (which was on a "shoe string" budget, even for the time).

All of that said, what really distinguishes Nikita is the fact that I find the episodes to be about relationships, not spies, sci-fi, terrorism, theoretical "ultra-secret" governmental agencies (albeit, I am sure the Bush administration would really enjoy the freedom of Section One), or any thing else. It is a microscopic look at the way people interact (both in 1995 and today). That is, through the established structure of the fictional Section One, relationships between people are highly controlled and well defined. One wrong move and you are "dead;" figuratively or (from the view point of the show) literally. One misunderstanding between two people can cascade into all sorts of outcomes. Lies and truths are intertwined (granted, in exaggerated excesses), driving the various relationships. Trust is a commodity that is elusive and even harder to maintain; games are habitually used. And POWER is the key to all relationships, interactions/actions, and motivations--either directly or indirectly; with or with out awareness.

Watch Nikita, and look for yourself in the mirror that it holds up for us to look at our own lives. I truly doubt that the creators and staff of Nikita intended to create a reflection of how relationships work, and I am not one to claim I know how they work. However, having a Ph.D. in both Sociology and Anthropology, it is my opinion that this is the strength of the series, Le Femme Nikita. For those interested in readings that influence my professional position, I recommend the following books in particular: The Homeless Mind: Modernization and Consciousness by Peter Berger, et al; Valuing the Self by Dorthy Lee (not available from Amazon); From Max Weber: Essays in Sociology by Max Weber (or any of his other works); Mind, Self, and Society by George Herbert Mead; and The Power Elite by C. Wright Mills.

As one final note, I would like to present MY personal opinion and position concerning the topic of Nikita: terrorism. As a former military officer with considerable experience in security, intelligence, and anti-terrorism in mid 1970s, I believe that Nikita's portrayal of how terrorism must be dealt with is much more realistic than our so called "War on Terrorism." Terrorists must be fought with terrorists: not hard working, patriotic soldiers of our fine military. Terrorism is NOT war; and rhetoric cannot change that.

LE FEMME NIKITA SEASON 4 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the very best season on the show. So much happens. If I were to purchase only one season, this would have to be it.

High Marks for a Cult Favorite, Low Marks for a Not so Great S4 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I give LFN five 5, heck 10, stars out pure devotion and love for this show and the characters that I've been enamored with since I was a kid.

But, people, that doesn't mean it automatically gets 5 stars in everything else.

Season 4 was disjointed and at times, boring and unexciting, with mediocre writing and plotting, that really began at the end of Season 3. While the acting was still stellar, perhaps the best by the supporting actors who were the focus rather than Nikita, there was little cohesiveness or unity between episodes, which LFN had always managed to do well. That is, bringing cogency that layered and developed into other episodes and linked them very well without overdoing it or over complicating it.

While there were some interesting, albeit lackluster, episodes that focus more on the bad guys and action sequences, with a dull and underdeveloped secret revelation about Nikita's double cross, it just lost that spark. Madeline is unceremoniously killed off, George too, Birkhoff is sacrificed then resurrected as his twin (though well done by the actor), and Operations sedately capitulates. In other words, it's black hole chaos and everyone just dies or says, 'ok, sure'. The last episode, which I personally disliked and found senseless, has Nikita as judge, jury and executioner, with the lame and uninspired side story of Mr. Jones presiding. Talk about neat and tidy. It's Nikita's time of retribution where she gets to decide the fate of Section and its people: riiiiiiight...sure. Thus, dewy doe eyed, she sentences Michael for cancellation only to save him at the end. And then tells him that she never loved him and she was, uh, just doing her job. What??? To which he responds by forgoing her confusing attempt at saving him and walks off. Huh???

A little disappointing for a show that maintained such ingenuity, drive, creativity and cleverness done with class, great dialogue and character development that kicked butt. Only to die off (for a time) so...with such a small bang, and bags of disappointment. And it's obvious that the producers knew they that they were getting the ax mid-season and began hodgepodging it together. There's the good, the bad and the ugly for all to see, it's hard to say what stood out more...The canceled scenes and commentaries are interesting and explain a few things, and avoids some too. The gag reel, while amusing, really didn't show anything. The great look of the show is still there and the only comforting element, as confusing, unsatisfactory, disconnected plotting abounded.

La Femme Nikita Season 1 And Season 2 Boxset Errors!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am a huge fan of La Femme Nikita and when I purchased Season One boxset off Ebay I was so thrilled and couldn't wait to watch it. But I noticed that all the special features that were advertised are not on the discs, maybe one or two deleted scenes but that's it. What happened to the "Making Of La Femme Nikita and interviews with cast and creators. On Disc One it says to check out discs 2,3 and 6 for more special features and there aren't any!!!

Then I purchased Season Two and the same thing there, only two or three deleted scenes and that's it!!! And also on Disc 5 Episode 18 which is called "Off Profile" is actually episode 21 which is "Adrian's Garden". Then on Disc 6 I looked at episode 21 called "Adrian's Garden" and thought that maybe that would be "Off Profile" and it was once again the same Episode "Adrian's Garden". So I have the same episode twice and I am missing one Episode. I have a funny feeling that these discs are not the originals and I am hoping to get a refund. If it doesn't happen I will report this seller to Ebay for selling Bootleg Copies.

Could someone write and say whether they have noticed the same thing on their Season 1 and Season 2 as well. Would really like to know what's going on here.

If you bought the first four, go ahead 4 out of 5 stars.

There are no English subtitles, but there is English closed captioning, which PowerDVD handles well.

I grew tired of the plot of the series by now (internal undermining worse than all the terrorists in the world, etc), but this season answers some important questions and is a much better ending than S4.

Consistent Quality 5 out of 5 stars.

This fifth season continues the mystery and intrigue but also answers a lot of questions and wraps up the stellar series by the creators of 48. Of course, even if I wasn't correct in this rating, you couldn't go wrong having a DVD set with the lovely Peta Wilson could you?

thre are no words 5 out of 5 stars.

this is how was the best show on television
I mean this show started all the "24", the Alias and all other cia shows that now you see on tv
This was a show you can loose yourself. It was a dark, drama, sensual and some
excellenta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very Satisifying Conclusion 4 out of 5 stars.

For any La Femme Fan (or operative), this is what you should have to complete your collection. It has what you crave (beauty, brains, strength, mystery). It also has answers! I gave it 4 stars because 2 of our favorites are not in all episodes (Madeline and Michael). The final episodes are missing some chemistry from earlier seasons. Without giving away the end, the series wraps everything up, but still leaves some open ends for fans to hope for a movie-of-the-week at some point!

mesmerizing 5 out of 5 stars.

This show captivated me after watching only parts of two eposodes on TV, acting was so excellent that I was hooked. The best.It was enough for me to want to watch the whole series and made buy them. Worth every cent I spent.

La Femme Nikita 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you have never watched "La Femme Nikita" and are starting out now, then I envy you the thrill of the first time. During its entire run, this was the best show on the USA network. This series expands on and outdoes the two different movie versions that preceded it.

Nikita is the ultimate rebel. Accused of a murder she didn't commit, she is spirited away by the secretive shadow agency, Section One. There she has a choice: become an operative or die. Considering there are five seasons, I guess we know which she opted for. Peta Wilson is totally hot and brainy as Nikita, and in the cold, emotionless Section, she never loses her humanity. Could older woman Madeline, as Section's No.2, be possibly even hotter than Nikita? Ice queen Madeline is so cool, so lethal, that any episode about her is by default among my favorites. Whether she goes head to head with a psychopath or efficiently dispatches a recalcitrant operative, she rocks big time.

This show has style and the music is tops: Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Massive Attack, etc. Over the five seasons, all the characters develop in ways that you would never expect and yet still ring true. Two overriding conflicts are present in this series: Nikita's relationship with operative Michael, and Michael/Nikita vs Operations/Madeline. Within those narratives, there are tons of unexpected twists and turns. I never wanted this series to end!

Editorial Review:

Section One a clandestine anti-terrorist organization fakes the death of a jailed convicted murderer and believing her twin assets of beauty and ability to kill will make her a valuable new operative trains her in the fighting skills necessary to succeed in her new job. The new operative code-named 'Josephine' proves to be somewhat less ruthless than planned however as she had been falsely convicted and never murdered anyone.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 012569813854 Manufacturer No: 81385

This has got to be one of the best shows that was ever on TV. Yes, it is dark and has an element of despair, but the plots, characters and acting is top-notch. You can see why other shows like Alias pale in comparison.

And for the people who asked, Season 4 will be out on July 25th. See http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=5468 for more info.

This series was written, produced, and acted at a level of quality far above most other TV shows. Few episodes of the best current TV shows come close in quality. Owning the season sets on DVD enables me to re-view them in a better format than video and to store them in a small fraction of the space my videos had required. I am so glad I bought them!

A pioneering masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.

I have always loved this series, better than the two movies, and bought all the DVDs available. When a friend of mine raved about Alias, I watched a few episodes and got so irritated at their blatant plagerism of this wonderful series. Plus Peta Wilson has Jennifer Garner beat hands down.
