Probably the Best Season Yet. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am one of the rare "Smallville" fans that greatly prefer the darker seasons of late to the light-hearted, freak-of-the-week seasons that the show started with. Season 8 introduced the marvelous Tess Mercer (as excellently portrayed by Cassidy Freeman) who filled the shoes of an MIA Lex Luthor with more charisma and grace than, dare I say it, the great Michael Rosenbaum in the past couple seasons. Also among the characters this year is Davis "Doomsday" Bloome, who is taken to the next level by Sam Witwer, who plays the role in such a way that the viewers can actually sympathize for the tortured, lonely murderer that Davis has unfortunately become.

There are only two problems that I have with season 8. The first is that around episodes 8.03-8.05, the show lagged. A lot. The episodes, I thought, were quite boring and just not the best work that the "Smallville" writers have put forth. Specifically 8.03 "Toxic," which could've been a fantastic exploration of Justin Hartley's Oliver "Green Arrow" Queen character but ended up being a bland, practical snorefest.

The second problem is the Lana-arc in episodes 8.10-8.14. While 8.10 "Bride," 8.11 "Legion," and 8.12 "Bulletproof" were all outstanding and Kristin Kreuk delivered on every front in her reprisal as Lana Lang, the storyline of giving Lana super powers was extremely unwelcome to most fans (myself included) and, if anything, ruined what could've been a perfect end to the lengthy Clark/Lana storyline that has haunted "Smallville" since the first episode. 8.14 "Requiem" is a good episode, mind you, but the poorly done super!Lana storyline brings it and 8.13 "Power" down as the worst episodes of the season.

Now, there are definitely some blockbuster episodes that were perfect, in my eyes. The entire slew of episodes from 8.15 to 8.21 were brilliant - specifically 8.15 "Infamous," 8.16 "Turbulence" (a brilliant and emotionally raw exploration of the characters - specifically Jimmy Olsen), 8.18 "Eternal," and 8.21 "Injustice." Watching this season, I was in awe at how much the actors and actresses - and their characters - have grown since they were first introduced to us and I have yet to be disappointed by the work turned in by the fantastic Tom Welling, the outstanding Allison Mack, and the stunning Erica Durance.

Overall, I highly recommend that new viewers catch this season when its on sale and all "Smallville" fans should purchase this boxset as soon as it's released. As we enter season 9, which may very well be our last "Smallville" season, I have high hopes that the show will kick it into high gear and go out with a bang.

I have followed the story line on cable TV for most of its seasons but, as circumstances often dictate, I have missed a few shows which can put some serious holes in appreciating dialogue that has to do with story-line. I love this recreation of the Superman Myth, except for the fact, he has yet to fly without being under the influence. The story seems to be sensitive to many deserving issues of the US, but there is still a distinct Canadian patois. I am an OKie and rural Kansans are a bit twangy, too. I can hang as a fan on until Clark begins to turn grey.

Smallville: Second Season 4 out of 5 stars.

The second season of Smallville continues where the first one left off; with Clark's friends in danger. After a conclusion is reached to that climax, the running storyline throughout the season delves into Clark's origins: Who is he? Where did he come from? What exactly is the ship? And who are his parents? All of these questions culminate in the season finale, which is a must-watch for fans of the show.

Awesome second installment but at times a little boring and strange. 4 out of 5 stars.

I really LOVED season one but season two is missing something... I never thought i would say this but i actually miss Whitney! Luckily though there is one episode about him but still... why did they do that to him?! I am a boy but still he was really funny and one of my favorite characters! At least Lana is still in the show. If she left, I would literally stop watching it because she is the glue to the show this season. I say that season one is something to buy but season two you should just rent or watch on television. But if you want to own all of the season's then go ahead and buy it but if not you could skip. The good thing though is that this is still a really good show and not that bad of a season. This season is not as good as i hoped it too be but hopefully season three will be better.

Superman in Training...?-Smallville's Complete Fifth Season 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Season Review-

I don't know what to say! Of all the seasons of Smallville, I missed the majority of Season 5 during its original airing. I couldn't wait to watch the episodes I missed as I heard Season 5 was one of the best seasons from many fans. Buying Season 5 on DVD was pretty much the reason why I bought the first 7 seasons on DVD since it's much more enjoyable watching the series as a whole, seeing show grow with each season. After I finished watching Season 5, I was shock at how put off I was by this season, as I times, I found it unbearable and watchable. The season opens up strong with the powerful premiere, "Arrival" with Clark building the Fortress of Solitude. That sequence and the scene of Clark walking into the Fortress where his father welcomes him is a pivotal moment in the history of the series. Not to mention, a black ship landed on Earth to which 2 rebel Kryptonians arrived and begin to wreck havoc on Smallville looking for Clark. The next 2 episodes are also excellent. "Mortal" is a great look at how Clark is mor heroic without his powers once again and "Hidden" is one of the most suspenseful episodes of the series yet. But from there, the season loses all momentum and derails in storylines and developments that are on the verge of being abysmal. Clark and Lana make a second attempt at having a relationship, while it starts off pleasant enough; you realize that the Clana relationship is more melodramatic angst, less star crossed lovers like originally thought. At one point, you just get sick of Lana demanding the truth from Clark and Clark whining about losing Lana. It doesn't make for gripping drama; it makes for an annoying bad soap opera. To makes matters worse, the end of the season saw the beginning of the Lexana relationship, which is hilarious. At the beginning of the season, Lana almost hated Lex then suddenly after breaking up with Clark, she runs to Lex for comfort...I'm sorry...what! The beginning of their relationship is poorly written and forced with Michael and Kristin seeming obviously awkward during those scenes. The majority of episodes are some of the worst of the series: "Aqua" is a sub-par adaption of DC comics' Aquaman, "Thrist" is right up there with "Spell" as the nominees for worst episode of the series, "Exposed" is a lackluster mystery centered around a dead stripper, "Tomb" is a bland ghost story despite Allison Mack's stunning performance, "Hypnotic" is almost unwatchable, "Void" and "Mercy" are more blatant movie rip-offs, "Fragile" is a mediocre directorial debut for Tom Welling and "Fade" even sees the writers reusing old meteor freak plots.

But to be fair, Season 5 has its great moments, no matter how few they were. James Masters of "Buffy" fame makes his debut on the series as Milton Fine, one of Clark's college professors. There is more to Fine than Clark realizes as he is none other than another one of his greatest archenemies, Brainiac. Masters just oozes menace and evil, portraying the character with class. The Brainiac storyline was one of Smallville's most exciting yet but like Season 4, the writers treated the storyline poorly by either forgetting the storyline for a majority of the season or simply leaving it as a small sub-plot for several episodes. It's another bad move by the writers as they waste another perfectly good storyline. Anyway, Allison Mack gets a hell of a lot more to do as Chloe when Clark finds out that she knows the truth about him. Becoming the future Superman's official new sidekick was exciting as Chloe continued to develop nicely and the interaction between both characters has never been fresher. The friendship between Clark and Lex seems to be over for the most part, I liked seeing the new dynamic between both men. It may not be hate yet, but they obviously don't trust each other as the lies between them go bigger. Now without Clark's friendship, Lex grows cruel, power hungry, even closer to the evil tyrant he will become. The Senate race storyline was an excellent way of showing Lex's darker side as he runs for Senator for Kansas against Jonathan Kent. "Lexmas" is not just a fun holiday episode, but a surreal journey for Lex provided by his mother's spirit by showing her son a possible better life of her son. Jonathan Kent grows as well when he struggles to win the race for Kansas' state senator. It's the perfect storyline for Jonathan and sadly his last. In the series 100th episode, "Reckoning" is probably the saddest episode of series when a shocking event that impacts the characters leaves Clark messing with the fabric of time but his father's death being the final outcome. It's a heartbreaking farewell for John Schneider whose Jonathan Kent was the strongest portrayal of the character yet. Other great episodes are the double Brainiac arc episodes, "Splinter" and "Solitude", Victor Stone aka Cyborg of the Teen Titans drops by in "Cyborg", "Vengeance" features the saddest scene in Smallville history, and despite the plot holes left from underwriting the Brainiac arc, "Oracle" and the apocalyptic finale, "Vessel" end the season quite well. The arrival of Zod development in Brianiac's plan was exciting as well as the moment Zod arrives in Lex's body as his vessel. With Zod free, the whole world in chaos with a kryptonian virus unleashed and Clark slowly floating away into the Phantom Zone, the season left a lot to look forward to as Smallville season finales tend to do.

After starting with so much promise, Season 5 quickly becomes what I think to be Smallville's worst season to date. While there are some memorable moments and episodes, not to mention Tom Welling showcases some of his best acting work with "Splinter", "Reckoning" and "Vengeance". Still, the majority of the individual episode just brought this season down. Certain characters were misused (Lois Lane surprisingly!), some relationships made no sense (Lexana once again) and the series as a whole continued to forget what the series was all about. It's kinda funny how Alfred Gough and Miles Millar declared in the Season 5 overview that this season was "Superman in Training" when there was very little training involved! There was so much potential, but there's very little outcome here.

Season Rating: 3.5/10

Video and Audio Review-

Probably the best the series ever looked; it's not just the stunning widescreen that makes all 22 Season 5 episodes look better, but it's the spectacular special effects which seemed to have peaked this season. The sounded has never been better.

Video and Audio Rating: 9/10

Extras-
The commentaries continue to be some of the most hilarious part of the extras. There's commentary on "Thrist" where the writers have fun bashing themselves on how this dreaded episode could have come to be. Another commentary for "Splinter" is straight forward. Smallville's 100th Episode: The Making of a Milestone is a great documentary showing the whole cast and crew working on the 100th episode. The Vengeance Chronicles are mini-episodes that see Chloe getting deeper into the life of the masked vigilante, the Angel of Vengeance. They are entertaining but filler extras. The deleted scenes are a mixed bag as usual.

Extras Rating: 8/10

Overall Score: 6.5/10

Editorial Review:

Returning for a fourth season of adventures in SMALLVILLE, the young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) once again attempts to balance his high school life with the superpowers he was equipped with at birth. The season begins with Lois Lane (Erica Durance) turning up in Smallville to investigate the death of her cousin. In a neat touch, Margot Kidder, who plays Lois in the Christopher Reeve-era SUPERMAN movies, makes an appearance in the first episode. Meanwhile, Lana (Kristin Kreuk) has picked up a new boyfriend in Paris, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) has got his hands on a kryptonian crystal in Egypt, and Lionel (John Glover) sets a mutant on the trail of Chloe (Allison Mack) to determine whether she is dead or not. A wonderful counterpart to the adult adventures of SUPERMAN, SMALLVILLE continues to go from strength to strength.

Smallville is, by far, my favorite show on television. I recently purchased a 37" HDTV and a Blu-ray player and to be able to buy my favorite show on Blu-ray just makes the experience so much better. I have all 7 seasons available, so far and when Season 8 is released, I will purchase it on Blu-ray, as well. The only thing that threw me off about this purchase is that the Amazon description says it's 6 discs, but it's only 3. This should be fixed to exclude any confusion, but other than the confusion, this product is perfection. I recommend this show to anyone who is a Superman fan, as it is the only successful Superman show to air.

"You're never going to get anywhere with your eyes closed" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I got hooked on Smallville with this very season. My sister went out on a limb and bought the entire first season. We didn't know if we would like it, but we thought "What the heck?"
What an understatement! This is an amazing series! The characters are so diverse, from the humble farmboy, Clark, to the high energy Chole, best friend Pete, girl-next-door Lana, and the rich boy, Lex.

"Pilot": Clark's ship lands in Smallville in 1989. Present day, Clark gets in trouble with Whitney, Lana's boyfriend. Former hazing victim, now equipped with electrical powers, comes back to torment and kill the football jocks. This is a great start to the series. I love the beginning, with Lionel and a young Lex in the heliocopter. 5/5

"Metamorphosis": Kid gets infected with bugs and turns into one, torments Lana. Man, this episode can scare the crap out of you. Not my favorite episode, but still pretty interesting. Clark "flies" in this one. 4/5

"Hothead": Gym teacher with a hot temper can create fire. Good special effects and definitely interesting (particularly with special guest John Glover)! 4/5

"Xray": Tina develops an unhealthy attachment to friend Lana; Clark discovers his X-Ray vision. I love the opening sequence where it appears Lex is robbing the bank. 5/5

"Cool": Ladies' man jock falls into a lake and can't get warm. Starts going after his old girlfriends and freezing them solid. This one is pretty terrifying and showcases Chloe beautifully. 4.5/5

"Hourglass": An older man is able to switch to his younger self and attempt to enact revenge on the Jurists who put him in jail. I love how Cassandra sees Clark's future and then Lex's. 5/5

"Craving": Guest star Amy Adams is a fat girl who wants to get thin. She does, but then develops a "craving" for fat. Chloe meets Lex in this episode and Pete gets himself a date. 4.5/5

"Jitters": Earl Jenkins holds LuthorCorp hostage, trying to find Level 3 and a cure for his jitters. An AMAZING episode, probably one of my favorites of the season. We get to see how Lionel "handles" the situation, Chloe's dad, and Lex's self-sacrificial attitude. 5/5

"Rogue": A dirty cop finds out Clark's secret and forces the farm boy to assist him in crime. Not one of my favorites (no one real reason). 4/5

"Shimmer": Someone is tormenting Victoria at Lex's mansion. It looks like it's Lex's teenaged admirer... I love seeing Lex in this episode, particularly with his interactions with Victoria and his father. 5/5

"Hug": A travelling salesman with the ability to force people to change their minds comes to Smallville and build a toxic planet nearby. Enjoyable episode, particularly the part where Lex becomes a machine-gun wielding psycho killer. 4.5/5

"Leech": Geeky kid (Shawn Ashmore) sneaks Clark's powers and becomes super famous...and super burdened. I really wasn't fond of the kid, how arrogant he became, but did like how Lex manipulated Victoria and her father. 3/5

"Kinetic": Three thieves who can move through walls and blackmail Lex. Kinda stupid (the meteor-rock tattoos were over the top), but I enjoyed seeing Lex scramble for his lost items and Whitney really turn around. 3.5/5

"Zero": The events at Club Zero come back to haunt Lex. Nice episode, showing both the good and bad sides of Lex. 5/5

"Nicodemus": A flower with the ability to change a person's behavior infects Jonathan...and then Lana...and then Pete. I liked seeing the new Jonathan and Lana and how it ties in with Dr. Hamilton, brought up in the "Jitters" episode. 5/5

"Stray": A young boy who can read people's minds is being used to commit crimes but flees to Jonathan and Martha's farm. I love the interactions between Clark and Ryan, Ryan reveals Chloe's feelings for Clark, and Lionel tempting his son with a job in Metropolis. 4.5/5

"Reaper": A young man is able to turn people to ash. I love how Lex deals with the man Lionel sent to "babysit" Lex! 4/5

"Drone": The race for class president gets out of hand when two of the candidates are attacked by bees. I like how Clark tries to run for president and how Pete assists him. 4/5

"Crush": A former art student, now equipped with telekinesis, returns to school and begins to enact revenge for the hit and run that ruined his skills. We get to see Chloe have a brief romance and Lana get jealous. 4.5/5

"Obscura": Lana develops a power to see through a kidnapper's eyes, which she must use to save Chloe. The "who-did-it" is pretty lame and nothing is very interesting in my opinion. 3/5

"Tempest": Lionel closes the plant, Clark takes Chloe to the spring formal, and Lana takes Whitney to the bus station...when a tornado hits. A nice way to end the season, with all people in an uncertain future. 4.5/5

Many people criticize the first season as being very "Monster of the Week". It is true for the most part, but still, it is an enjoyable season. You are introduced to the strange world of Smallville, the wonderful characters, and the beginnings of the Superman legend. I highly recommend.

One of SMALLVILLE's best seasons in years 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Except for a major stutter in mid-season, Season 8 of SMALLVILLE has been the best in several years. The major problem with the show had long been the continuing gap between it and the traditional Superman mythology. It was OK for this to happen for a while it was dealing with Clark's high school days, but after awhile they simply needed to get on with the story. We've always known how it was going to end. Or at least where a number of things would inevitably end up. Lana would go away and Lois would take her place. Clark would learn to fly. He would become a superhero and embrace his destiny. But for several years, while the show remained enjoyable, it felt more like the show was running in place than telling a story. Season 8 went a long way to correcting this. For instance, things really started heating up between Clark and Lois, and they turned out to far more chemistry than we had been given reason in previous seasons to hope. In fact, I enjoyed few things in Season 8 as much as the scenes between the two of them. And increasingly the show was brought in line with DC mythology. In fact, the current producers have promised that the 9th season will move even closer to Superman. And all I can say is, it's about time.

As if to prove all this, the one real glitch in Season 8 came with the return of Lana in midseason. The series had been moving along marvelously, with one delightful twist after another, all to come to a crashing halt when Lana came back to SMALLVILLE. Mind you, I like Kristin Kreuk and think she is one of the cutest women in the world, but the whole Clark and Lana story got old a very long time ago and it was time to move on, not time to prolong it a bit longer. Lana's goodbye in Season 7 should have been for good. Worst of all, when Lana came back, Lois went away. One of the most regrettable tings about Season 8 is that Erica Durance, despite being an opening credits character, was in fact only a halftime cast member. I didn't count precisely, but my guess is that she was actually only in about half of the season's episodes. For the show to move forward in Season 9, that needs to change. They need to pull out their pocketbooks and pay Erica Durance for twenty-two episodes. Hopefully they have realized this on their own.

Season 8 saw a number of other DC additions. We got additional tastes of the JLA in embryo. We got Clark fully embracing a dual identity, as Clark on the one hand the Red-Blue Streak on the other, even wearing something of a uniform in the combo of his red or blue T-shirt and blue or red windbreaker. He works at the Daily Planet as a reporter, sitting right beside Lois. And he confronts during the course of the season one of the greatest Superman nemeses, Doomsday, who bears the distinction of having killed Superman in the comics. Sharing the body of Davis Bloome, Doomsday remains somewhat under control, but when he becomes pure beast in the finale, he is pretty fearsome indeed. For so long the show seems afraid to embrace the fact that this whole thing was about the Boy Who Becomes Superman. Now that it is finally coming to terms with that, it has gotten better.

I'm more excited about SMALLVILLE moving into Season 9 than I have in a long, long time. With things between Lois and Clark becoming what it was supposed to be, with the show moving closer to the DC mythology (with one staggering exception, the death - or at least the apparent death - of a Superman universe staple), and with the new producers seemingly unafraid to move the story to new places, the show at this late date seems to be revitalized and full of purpose once again. Even though Season Eight did not end on the kind of huge cliffhanger it has in the previous seven ones, but a sad, somber one, most things will inevitably go back to normal, or SMALLVILLE's version of normal, early in Season 9.
