A fourth season of great times! 5 out of 5 stars.

During this season, the inevitable happened. James Evans Sr.,portrayed by John Amos, was killed in an automobile accident. Amos was fired from GOOD TIMES in the spring of 1976 after a few offensive comments he made regarding the GT set. Joining the GT cast is Johnny Brown who plays the building superintendent. Brown's character is named Bookman. Bookman might have been mentioned several times in previous seasons.

Dyn-o-mite for Good Times!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm 11 Years Old and Proud to Say I Love Good Times, The Way The Show has Characteristics, Problems, Marriage, etc., My Best Characters were Florida, Michael and James. James was The Character who always Understands and was Head of The House and Concerned about his Wife and Children (And May Solve The Problem Violently, if His Kids is Injured), Florida was The Housewife and Cuddly Mother that Gets The Job Done and Michael, The Protest and Activist Brother of J.J. and Thelma , was my Third Favorite Character, who Stands Up His rights Against (After The 70's No One used this Word), The Man.

I Don't Care what Anybody thinks or Says, Good Times is a CBS
Sitcom like The Jeffersons, and All In The Family, To Me, If James (John Amos) was Still alive, I Would love to see Him make a Comeback as The "Original" Head of The Household. I Love The Fourth Season and i Wish They Had A Return of Good Times Every Tuesday, Monday, Friday and Saturday (The Original Episodes that Aired on Those Nights).

A CLASSIC 4 out of 5 stars.

Good Times is a classic show. It reminds me of my upbringing and how important it was for the family to stay together dispite all the obstacles.

I highly recommend this DVD.

Please show it to your kids so that they can learn that there still are loving families out there no matter what race/nationality they are.

A Great Family Sitcom until the Network ruined it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Let's face it, Good Times was never the same after James Evans Sr. played by John Amos was killed off. Esther Rolle fought hard to keep the Evans family as the first African American nuclear family on television with a father and a mother. James and Florida Evans were terrific together as a couple onscreen and believable playing parents to J.J., Thelma, and Michael. I loved the bickering between J.J. and Thelma because there was still love between them. Michael was the radical son who aspired for greatness. THen there is the lovely and funny Willona Woods, beloved friend and neighbor, to the Evans family with all the gossip. The thirteen episodes began a legacy of a long series run. The first season has the family living in urban Chicago. No mention of Maude where Florida Evans first appeared or of life in New York City. My only complaint is that there are no subtitles or foreign languages or any extra special features like recollections or reunions.

Hey, what can I say? Dynomite! I recently purchased this set and enjoyed it so much I got season three as a Christmas gift. I already owned season one. This is still before John Amos left the series and it was at its peak. JJ rules! I dare you NOT to laugh while watching these shows. John Amos and Esther Rolle will have you laughing too. All the cast is great.

Great TV Show 5 out of 5 stars.

Great TV Show. Loved this show and bought season 1,2,3 Loved John Amos role in this show but it was not the same after He left. Shows today could take a lesson on good family entertainment like this show. Jimmy Walker (JJ) was a great actor and comedian. The show dealt with hard times growing up in the projects but as hard as it was the Evans household hung in and took care of each other and dealt with all the problems that came as a family.

Real Issues 4 out of 5 stars.

i FOUND THIS SERIES TOO BE ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS, LOVED WATCHING IT. THE BEST OF THE SERIES IS THAT THEY TOUCHED ON ALL ISSUES THAT EVERYONE CAN RELATE TOO AND THAT WERE REAL ISSUES THAT ANYONE WATCHING CAN SAY YES I KNOW HOW THAT FEELS OR I'VE BEEN THROUGH THAT. BEST OF ALL THERE A REAL FAMILY WITH THERE UP'S AND DOWN'S.

Keep The Good Times Rolling! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The third season of Good Times was the last official season for Newark born John Amos to play the family patriarch James Evans Sr. SAdly, Esther Rolle who played the family matriarch Florida Evans fought desperately to keep the Evans family with father and mother but that's another story. This season proves how essential and important the father was to the story.
The first episode is entitled the Family Gun featuring James Sr. buying an illegal handgun to protect his family. In the meantime, Florida's purse was reported stolen but the African American police officer takes a week to visit their apartment and keeps calling her Georgia and keep repeating that it was a bicycle not a purse stolen. At the same time, the family gun goes missing. Worse, a 3 year old boy is shot with an unknown gun in the projects. Fortunately, the gun was hidden away by an unexpected member of the family and boy survived. Even during that morning, Thelma, the Evans' only teenage daughter, gets attacked and the policeman does nothing about it. I showed this episode on my last day of student teaching in Newark, New Jersey. My students live in the projects and these dangerous neighborhoods. Even all they go through, the Evans family remains intact until the network disables the family.
Another episode has Florida going for an operation but her husband wants her to have the best so he take her to a better hospital.
Another episode has a possible family separation when James Sr. takes a good-paying job in Alaska leaving his family behind in the projects, don't think that happens.
Of course, the politicians episode is worth remembering because of the politics and differences between a young promising politican who wants to make things better and the incumbent who continues to keep playing the same useless role while he vacations in Bermuda and buys his wife a mink coat.
Another episode has the Evans asking for assistance by Florida's wealthier cousins, Edgar and Betty. Sadly, times have fallen on them too.
The supporting cast features Janet Dubois who plays WIllona Woods, the Evans beloved friend and neighbor, a divorcee with no children of her own. Jimmie Walker Jr. is dynmite in his unforgettable role of James Evans Jr. or J.J. as an aspiring artist with a passion for the ladies. Bernadette Stanis is also terrific and under-rated as the butt of his many sibling jokes. Regardless of the jokes among the family members, you can tell that they still love each other. Of course, Ralph Carter plays Michael Evans, the youngest, outspoken, African American with some radical ideas of his own to help his community. You can't leave out the roles of John Amos and Esther ROlle as James and Florida Evans, the loving couple and parents. Despite their ups and downs, they remained a family. SAdly, it was the network that ruined a good thing.

I love this series 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I love this series. By Season Six the series was back on track. Mama came back. Thelma was married to Keith. And J.J. was J.J. By the way, I love the DVD cover. Doesn't it look like they all sat there and specifically posed for this DVD? That's so cool. Does anyone know how Ralph Carter is? I remember reading some years back in The Enquirer that he is HIV-positive. I hope he is staying healthy.

The song for "Good Times" was written by Alan & Marilyn Bergman.

These are the opening-theme lyrics to "Good Times"

Good Times.
Any time you meet a payment. - Good Times.
Any time you need a friend. - Good Times.
Any time you're out from under.
Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can.

Temporary lay offs. - Good Times.
Easy credit rip offs. - Good Times.
Scratchin' and surviving. - Good Times.
Hanging in and jiving- Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got `em - Good Times

And, these are the closing-theme lyrics to "Good Times"

Mmmmmm
Just lookin' out of the window.
Watchin' the asphalt grow.
Thinkin' how it all looks hand-me-down.
Good Times, yeah, yeah Good Times

Keepin' your head above water
Makin' a wave when you can

Temporary lay offs. - Good Times.
Easy credit rip offs. - Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got 'em - Good Times.

All we have to remember are Good times 4 out of 5 stars.

The fifth season pulls you in with the four part story line, "the Evans Get Involved." I was too young to see it when it first aired but it hooked me in from the start. Janet Jackson fits the role of sweet but troubled Penny and Wilona plays the mother role quite well. The season contains all sorts of laughs and predicaments as J.J is now the head of the household and has to hold it together. It would have been more believable though to see an episode where J.J actually gets the job at the ad agency. As another reviewer commented there were too many fat jokes in this season directed at Bookman and after a while they got stale. Since the show was about discrimination they sure had no problems attacking other types for a cheap laugh. The episode where J.J dreams that he has turned white was one of the weirdest ones in the season and it failed to actually make the point it was trying to make. Another memorable episode is when Wilona is offered a security job but has doubts when she discovers what she actually has to do. It truly was an episode ahead of its time taking into account all the surveillance cameras in the world today. I have to confess I did enjoy the season very much although I do have one complaint. In the first season the poverty is very much front and centre but here, one would be hard pressed to say the Evans are suffering in any true sense. The porridge that was a constant for breakfast in the first three seasons has been replaced by pancakes, eggs and bacon. Their fridge is now full of ribs, chicken, pork etc...they buy new furniture in this season without a fuss and there are forever going out and taking part in cultural events. The family in reality is now lower middle class. They might still live in the projects but so what? It's also interesting to see all the rich guys that come through Wilona's door. Nevertheless despite my minor quibble, this is a good season to own and I rated an A.
