Addictive series 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased the first season DVD because of David Caruso starred in it. Then when I got into it I had to have the other seasons as well.

Jimmy Smit made a great replacement character when David left. He was very handsome, a great actor and his character is so complex. All of the series regulars were interesting and well played.

I just wonder IF New York city is that conjested and crowded, the 15th precinct shows a down and dirty part of the city. I enjoyed the series.

When are they publishing the next series on DVD ? 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love this series and I can not believe they have not published the next season on DVD yet. I can't wait to watch it.

Great series, sorry to see it go... 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the series and am chomping at the bit for the rest.
I will certainly buy them even if I'm on my death bed.

NYPD Blue - The Complete Third Season 1 out of 5 stars.

I was much surprised by the use of double-sided DVDs which require at least 10 power magnification to read what's on the disc. I'm sorry I did not read the comments that other people had with these double-sided discs. It might have swayed me not to buy it. I had rented Series 2 from Netflix and they were all single sided discs.

Much to my surprise Disc 1 of four was physically out of balance and caused my player to vibrate and resonate an annoying sound. It was much less when I tried Disc 2. All four discs seemed to have problems with skipping, freezing and general were not performing well.

A positive (*****) five star performance was given by Amazon.com in their return and refund policy regarding these mechanically defective DVDs.

I would hope that in the future the number of DVDs involved in a series is mentioned so you could avoid this double-sided manufacturing method.

Again, hats off to Amazon.com for their service. Would have loved to own this series in single-sided discs.

Not Happy!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own all four seasons of this great show, I love the show, but that's not what I'm not happy about, I have just been told that the Knuckle Headed Studio who brought the first four seasons of this great show have NO intention of releasing any more seasons on DVD, due to "lack of interest" of fans. Oh Phoooey!!!!

To say I'm fuming is an understatement.

If anyone out there has any idea's on how to get the ball rolling, feel free to post them here.

A case against Fox... 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been waiting for Season 5 and onwards for a long time now. Fox say that the sales of the previous seasons have not been good enough. Added to which TNT have been showing NYPD Blue from this year in full. I would rather buy the dvds but I think I will just take the remaining seasons off the air as Fox does not intend to release them. I hate it when series are released and then just stopped because 'sales do not justify further seasons'. Does Fox not bother doing market research to see what the demand is prior to releasing? I have never season any advertising for the sets so maybe there is your answer.

I would rather not have a series than to have a situation like in Season 4 of NYPD Blue where there is a cliffhanger in the final episode and I will never know what happens next.

Fox has done the same with 'Hill Street Blues', 'St. Elsewhere', 'Picket Fences', 'The Practice', etc. so the excuse is wearing thin as you figure they would learn from one experience.

So I say to the world, copy the show from the broadcasts!

It was good to review the first season. I was an avid TV watcher of the show and I've missed seeing the drama and comradery. The service/shipping/condition - everything was great. I will continue to make purchases through AMAZON.

Editorial Review:

It was the groundbreaking series that broke all the rules and triggered what may be the biggest mutiny in TV history when some station affiliates across the country refused to carry the show. Some viewers also complained but the majority loved what was being touted as TV's first R-rated series. Now in its tenth year NYPD Blue has garnered an amazing 86 Emmy Award nominations and 21 wins. So if you missed all the excitement back then don't miss it now! Take a ride back to 1993 and join the cops of the 15th Precinct for the first season of NYPD Blue.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 024543529132 Manufacturer No: 2252913

Editorial Review:

Originally broadcast in 1994, the second season of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes, under apparently less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat.

More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor, Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work to foil New York's scummiest with more character- and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic minority characters, such as Lieutenant Fancy, are increasingly marginalized here, the series is more comfortable--and even has fun--with regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including: a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare rear.

New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed estrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).

The DVD set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and crew discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood broken only by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs

Editorial Review:

Within the first few minutes of the pilot episode, it's clear what made NYPD Blue stand out from the rest of the cop show pack, as the characters express themselves in startlingly colorful language. This, combined with glimpses of nudity, earned NYPD Blue the reputation as R-rated television--but just about every episode demonstrates the propulsive storytelling and superb ensemble acting that put substance behind the flash. The show revolves around two detectives: Tough, moralistic, but passionate John Kelly (David Caruso) and hair-trigger Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), who wrestles with booze and racist tendencies. Caruso rose to prominence as the star, but his intensity bleeds too easily into preening self-righteousness; it's Franz, with a much more complex role, who really drives the show.

NYPD Blue's writers skillfully navigate both single-episode criminal cases (ranging from tense procedural sequences like Kelly slowly drawing a confession out of a man who killed a cab driver, to lighter cases like a stolen Oscar statuette) and storylines that stretch dizzily across the entire season. These sustained plots are the real meat of the show: Kelly's hardline ethics are humanized by watching him clumsily come to a professional relationship with his ex-wife Laura (Sherry Stringfield) and work through an affair with Officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman), who is herself entangled with mobsters; while Sipowicz's near-death in the pilot has repercussions that crop up throughout the series, threatening his sobriety and his developing relationship with a lawyer (Sharon Lawrence)--and then there's his tense relationship with African American Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel), which affords some trenchant looks at racism inside and outside the department. The writing, directing, and acting only gets more subtle and complex as the show goes on, making this set a must for any fan. --Bret Fetzer

NYPD Blue - we miss you. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Great script, great acting, great directing. It was a bit hectic - but that's the way it was supposed to be. Most of the "music" was unfortunate. 12 Years was not enough!

The first three seasons were the best 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Seasons 1-3 of NYPD Blue are basically two different shows. Season one plus episodes 1-4 of Season 2 make up the "John Kelly Episodes". During this time, NYPD Blue emphasized the "Blue" part of its title with strong sexual content that was often excessive. With the departure of the central character of the show, detective John Kelly, the entire show had to shift gears. First off, Sherry Stringfield, who played Kelly's ex-wife and primarily acted as a source of John's Catholic guilt over his divorce, essentially had nothing to do after his departure, and was thus written out of the show. Likewise for officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman), who was John's lover during the first season. She is given a light prison sentence for her part in the killing of a mobster, and never heard from again.

Thus, from episode 5 of season 2 through season 3, we basically have a brand new show with more emphasis placed on the character development of Andy Sipowicz as well as the solving of individual cases. Over the next few years Sipowicz is transformed from the alcoholic, bigotted, less-than-adequate detective we see in the pilot to an admirable man with a somewhat tarnished halo. Also, Andy's new partner, and the actor with star billing, detective and widower Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) is introduced. Simone has a less hectic personal life than his predecessor Kelly, as well as a less hard-boiled approach to the job. Towards the end of the second season, Simone starts a romance with detective Diane Russell (Kim Delaney) that continues throughout the joint duration of their tenure on the show.

One of the more puzzling developments in the show was the addition of detective Adrianne Lesniak (Justine Miceli) at the beginning of season two. From the beginning it seemed the writers didn't know quite what to do with her. At first she is the object of affection of Det. James Martinez (Nicholas Turturro). Not wanting to get involved with a fellow officer, she lies about her sexual orientation. Or is she lying? Even she eventually seems confused about the answer to that question. Eventually, she and Martinez do get together, but she is so controlling that the romance almost immediately collapses. Afterwards, Det. Lesniak is written out of the series at the end of season three leaving us wondering...just what WAS her purpose in the show to begin with?

By the end of season three, PAA Donna Abandando and Det. Greg Medavoy have tried and failed at romance and Donna has left New York for a job in California; Bobby and Diane's romance has progressed to the point where Bobby feels a proposal is in order... and Diane's response is to practically leave skid marks on the carpet in her retreat (it takes the entirety of season 4 to get to the bottom of this reaction); and a great personal tragedy throws Sipowicz' three-year stint of sobriety to a hault. All of these developments take season 4 in a different direction than seasons two and three, and, quite frankly, I think it marks the end of the best of the NYPD Blue years. The only thing I can say that is better in season four is the expansion of John Irvin's role (Bill Brochtrup) as PAA. I always thought he was much more interesting than anyone else that held that job.

I guess I'd give seasons 1-3 five stars for content but give this package deal only two stars. The main reason for the two-star rating is that these three seasons together cost more than if you buy each season individually. Also, it always seems that eventually popular multi-season TV series come out in excellent quality DVD box sets that make you regret your earlier purchases. Take "Homicide: Life on the Street" for example. For years, you could only buy individual seasons at exhorbitant prices and the series-capping movie couldn't even be found on VHS. Several months ago the whole series plus the movie plus bunches of bonus features came out in one boxed set that cost roughly a third of what it would have cost to buy all 7 seasons individually. This is probably the eventual path NYPD Blue will take too. The questions are, when will this happen, and are you willing to wait until it does?
