Outer Limits 45th Anniversary Edition 4 out of 5 stars.

A single release of this 60's SciFi series was a welcome addition to my DVD video collection.

A recent visit to the local best buy clocked the series at nearly $100 for the three individual volumes. BB had this new single set priced at a savings of 50%.

I was impressed with crisp clean EZ to use menus. The B/W video and Mono audio quality was excellent.

I did miss bonus extras, and the lack of closed captions for those of us with less than perfect hearing was also sorely missed.

Others have mention problems with the double sided discs. My toshiba DVD player had NO such troubles. Either disc quality has improved, or maybe these other people just need to upgrade their hardware.

While the "monster" FXs are very dated, the stories have held up well over the years. All in all, enjoyable to watch.

4 stars.

What an amazing 45 years 5 out of 5 stars.

When my father first watched this, he would have been about eight or nine years old. Growing up myself, Outer Limits has been one of my classical favorites. What's even more amazing, is that after forty five years, this show is still considered great. Now my father is in his fifties and I'm in my twenties, and quite amazingly we still enjoy this show even after all this time. It's even more amazing that you can watch this movie nearly anywhere, from your laptop computer, to your dvd player at home. If anything, the very fact that you can watch this anywhere would have been science fiction at the time when Outer Limits first appeared. Outer Limits was very close to Twilight Zone, with the exception that it was an hour long (although Twilight Zone had a few hour long episodes), and most of the episodes were based on alien concepts, robots, or dimensional concepts. Like Twilight Zones, you see many famous actors/actresses appearing on the show. One comes to mind would be Leonard Nimoy in "I, Robot" which was a great episode.

I highly recommend this collection. You will enjoy it a lot. It is in the original black and white, and each episode is about fifty minutes long and you get forty nine episodes in total, the entire collection. There is one problem though, and that is the dvds are given in double sided dvds. Which is fine and all, but after so many usage, you get a lot of finger prints on one side or the other.

Editorial Review:

Despite forced changes in executive and creative personnel, plummeting ratings and the constant threat of cancellation, the truncated second season of The Outer Limits (1964-65) yielded some of the series' finest episodes. While The Twilight Zone was fading fast on CBS, the bean-counters at ABC used focus groups and ratings statistics to enforce their previous mandate for a "monster of the week" format for their flagging science-fiction series, and after a few promising episodes early in the season, Outer Limits settled into a regrettable routine of reduced budgets and rubber-suit creatures that wouldn't pass inspection at a drunken Halloween party. A former network executive with minimal creative input, Perry Mason producer Ben Brady struggled to keep the doomed series alive while coproducer Seeleg Lester sought legitimacy by courting respected writers and material.

As Harlan Ellison observes in David J. Schow's indispensable book The Outer Limits Companion, weak ratings allowed quality episodes to slip under the radar of ABC executives. Ellison's own classic teleplays--"Soldier" (which would later inspire The Terminator and subsequent legal squabbles) and "Demon with a Glass Hand"--yielded the season's finest stand-alone episodes, while the two-part "The Inheritors" (featuring the young Robert Duvall) fulfilled the series' neglected potential for longer-form plotlines. While these highlights redeem the season, "Wolf 359" (a title that would later factor in Star Trek: The Next Generation) is eerily effective despite low-tech restrictions, and "Behold Eck!" is the "best" (relatively speaking) of the tepid monster-themed shows that ABC demanded. It wasn't enough: After 17 episodes against the Saturday-night dominance of The Jackie Gleason Show, the greatest science-fiction anthology series of the 1960s was mercifully canceled, primed for phenomenal success in syndication and eventual revival as the "new" Outer Limits in 1995. --Jeff Shannon

More like little "morality plays" with a sci-fi touch! 4 out of 5 stars.

During the initial run of "The Outer Limits," I was just a ten-year-old boy; thus, I missed some of the covert aspects of the show. Of course, the monster of the week - the "bear" as the producers called it - freaked me out, but I failed to get the subtleties that the writers carefully crafted in each installment. There are hints of infidelity, homosexuality, and repressed sexual tension in some installments, while other episodes deal overtly with self-sacrifice, marital commitment, jealousy, and betrayal. To highlight which episodes deal with the aforementioned would be an injustice; thus, I will let that "discovery" and/or "interpretaion" be left to the viewer.

"The Outer Limits" showcased some of the best acting talent, veteran and on the rise, of any show of its era. Old pros like George Macready, Walter Burke, Neil Hamilton, Kent Smith, Simon Oakland, John Hoyt, Miriam Hopkins, McDonald Carey, and Signe Hasso guest in some of the best installments in this collection. While their hit roles are just around the corner, this collection also features performances by a pre-Spock Leonard Nimoy, Sally Kellerman before the theatrical "M*A*S*H," Richard Dawson before "Hogan's Heroes" and "Family Feud," Marion Ross before her days were "happy," and Robert Duvall before his Oscar and Emmy.

This compilation features the last sixteen of the show's first season and contains six that were among my all-time favorites: "Don't Open Till Doomsday," "The Bellero Shield," "Moonstone," "The Forms of Things Unknown," "The Guests," and "The Forms of Things Unknown."

Now, after this viewing I must add "A Feasibility Study," "The Mutant," "Second Chance," "The Children of Spider County," "The Invisibles," "The Chameleon," and "The Special One."

The set loses a star, however, because MGM should've given this classic show a five-star treatment, improving both the video and audio transfers.

Editorial Review:

From the moment Vic Perrin's omniscient "Control Voice" first proclaimed, "There is nothing wrong with your television set," on September 16, 1963, The Outer Limits was destined for greatness. The dazzling, long-beloved series was a daring experiment in "omnibus" TV, trading the speculative fantasies of The Twilight Zone for farther-out sci-fi concepts. Producers Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stefano had risen as gifted writers from (respectively) Broadway and Hollywood; Stevens rebounded from his previous canceled series, while Stefano had scripted Hitchcock's Psycho and was eager to expand his creative horizons. With an executive order for scary monsters and cold war thrills, their fruitful symbiosis was preceded by the superb Stevens-directed pilot "Please Stand By," named after the series' once-proposed title and changed to "The Galaxy Being" for its broadcast premiere.

Cliff Robertson launched an impressive succession of guest stars, and on meager, oft-exceeded budgets of $120,000 per episode, The Outer Limits became a showcase for shoestring ingenuity. The "blue ribbon crew" (as Stevens called it) included cinematographer Conrad Hall, whose OscarĀ®-winning skills were honed on the series' cramped TV-studio sets. Packed onto four double-sided DVDs, these 32 episodes (out of a total 49) comprise the series' dynamic first season of moody, frequently paranoid black-and-white adventures. Repeat performers Martin Landau, Robert Culp, and Sally Kellerman excel (respectively) in the fan-favorite episodes "The Man Who Was Never Born," "The Architects of Fear," and "The Bellero Shield" (and who can forget the insect-like menace of "The Zanti Misfits"?). There are a few clunkers, of course, but the series' quality (and parade of monsters) is remarkably consistent, and DVD compression does not compromise its technical achievement. These eerily seductive shows invite repeated viewing, supporting Stephen King's oft-quoted remark that The Outer Limits was "the best program of its type ever to run on network TV." --Jeff Shannon

Original Outer Limits: Great B/W shows need no remastering!! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read all the reviews before purchasing these disks and was a little apprehensive from all the bad reviews about the DVD quality. Well, I eventually decided to take a chance and am very glad that I did. I found the quality of the episodes to be EXCELLENT. These are all B/W video. I do not see why people complain about the lack of remastering, as there would be little improvement in the quality. I bought these to view the original episodes and this is exactly what is provided. And I really could care less about "Special Features".

I was able to view all episodes with no problem. The double sided DVDs are a real pain and have to be handled very carefully. I agree with others that say these should be on single sided DVDs, but it doesn't appear that this is going to happen as even the new "Complete Box Set" that is coming out later in the year have exactly the same 7 double sided disks. So, to combat this problem, I have made backups of all the disks and only view the backup set (I have found this to be completely unnecessary for single sided disks). Even at a 55% compression ratio, the quality of these episodes are excellent on all three of my DVD players.

I would whole heartedly recommend these DVDs to anyone with the caveat that the double sided DVDs require extra care and probably will not survive children's handling.
