Shows to feel good about. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I first bought this DVD for the Zoboomafoo episodes. We have a VHS of Zoboo that my kids, six and four, have really enjoyed. This PBS Kids Pack seemed to be more economical than buying the DVD of just Zoboomafoo, so I bought it instead hoping that they would also enjoy Sagwa and George Shrinks. And they did. They have actually watched George Shrinks the most. The best thing is that I feel good about my kids watching these videos because of the character lessons in Sagwa and George Shrinks and the educational value in Zoboomafoo. It is a really good combination pack.

Great Deal 5 out of 5 stars.

A single DVD contains two full-length programs:
Cat Nights, Flights, and Delights
Inspired by prize-winning author Amy Tan's children's book, Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat, this PBS offering features the adventures of the young Sagwa (approximately 8-years-old in human years) and her siblings, both in their Chinese palace home and on the streets of their city. "Firefly Nights" finds an "almost grown-up" Dong following Dad to see pyrotechnics the cats mistakenly take for glorious insects. Changing bad luck into good luck is the theme of "Fu-Fu's Full Moon Flight," in which a bat with poor echolocation saves Sagwa and his self-confidence. In "Shei-Hu's Secret," a trusting mouse shares his friends' hideaway with Sagwa, but her urge to brag puts them all in danger. Each 11-minute segment is followed by a minidocumentary on relevant topics like tai chi. PBS considers this a show for ages 5 to 8, but feline-loving preschoolers will enjoy it, too. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Feline Frenzy
Sagwa, her parents, her brother, and her sisters are expert calligraphers who serve the magistrate, but still find plenty of time for fun and adventure. In "Explorer's Club," Sagwa's brother Dongwa belongs to a Gamester's Club that refuses to include Sagwa in its membership. Sagwa forms her own Explorer's Club and excludes Dongwa, but a perilous situation soon necessitates that the rivals work together. In "Treasure Hunters," teamwork and quick thinking yield rich results, and in "Sick Day," Sagwa and Dongwa discover the joy of imagination and storytelling while the rest of the palace learns the power of cooperation. Brief interviews with children from around the world punctuate the episodes, offering a glimpse of a variety of cultures. Sagwa is a wholesome, entertaining series from PBS that encourages curiosity, cooperation, and an appreciation of different cultures. --Tami Horiuchi

Sagwa: the Chinese Siamese Cat...from the book by Amy Tan, is the best new children's series on PBS. Never fails to entertain, educate and charm your little ones.

My four year old loves her and her adventures so much, he wants a Siamese cat! (The Old Fashioned Kind!). After all, Sagwa and her Siamese family are the most intelligent of cats....10 out of 10 scale.

Your children will learn, laugh and enjoy Sagwa! She's the Best Cat!~~~

Sagwa is a wnderful show for young children, or for anyone for that matter! Sagwa goes on fun adventures and many times will run into trouble. It's up to her ask for advice and do the right thing. Sagwa learns many lessons and your children will too by watching her. Sagwa teaches kids to be thoughtful, creative, and kind. In the process children will learn about Chinese culture, traditions, and holidays. I recommend Sagwa to any family!

Sagwa (Dumb Melon) 5 out of 5 stars.

Sagwa's name fits her just right. Well if you don't have a cat that's adventurious and getting into trouble unintentially no one either kids or adults could learn from her mistakes. Both adults and kids can benefit from Sagwa; especially learning about the Chinese culture as well as learning from her mistakes and be kind and courteous towards each other. Some adults I think need to be double-dosed with Sagwa after all we are the adults of the world and are role models for the children of the world (Monkey see, monkey do). I have been saying for years now that Americans in general can learn from the Japanese about being humble. I've travaled through the Far East and learned alot. The most humble and courteous are both the Chinese and Japanese; especially the Japanese. The Japanese see most Americans as rude, crude and loud. Guess where these Americans get these bad habits from? It starts in the home with Mom and Dad. We as Americans need to turn ourselves around when it comes to this subject after all we are the international police of the world; we should act like it with first being humble. Let's start on the right foot and raise are children right and if you need any video aids; get Sagwa. Your not just raising your kids right, but also showing them what the world has to offer in different cultures and hope to God, we as a nation, get rid of racism.

Editorial Review:

Sagwa (a kitten), her siblings, and her parents are owned by a Chinese official called "The Foolish Magistrate" (since he tends to make laws and proclamations rather grandiosely and illogically) in 19th Century China. She and her parents are "scribe" cats, who transcribe the magistrate's words to paper in beautiful calligraphy. The series begins by showing how Sagwa came to the magistrates favor by negating one of his foolish laws at the same time ink-staining her face to appear as a Siamese cat. She has many adventures with her siblings, her friend Fufu (a bat), and the local village cats who don't live as luxuriously as her and her family.
