Editorial Review:

Jackass Number Two could be alternately titled "From Bowties to Bunny Ears: What Will Chris Pontius Be Wearing Next?" Like the first Jackass movie, Johnny, Bam, Chris, Steve-O, and the rest of the gang are all here. This "sequel" is full of stunts, pranks, and one-liners, and contains more male nudity, more scream-worthy moments, and of course more uncontrollable laughter. The film opens with a rather well-directed cinematic piece: the entire Jackass gang running from a stampede of bulls. From there it takes off into the hysterically exhausting world of Jackass. The bulls are in quite a few stunts, actually, one of which has "leader" Johnny Knoxville using himself as a red flag and getting speared by a charging bull. Ah, good times. Some of the stunts include: "Beehive Limo," "Fart Mask," "Red Rocket," and a fake terrorist plot which boasts the improv line "Where I'm going, I don't need luggage." Bam gets branded, they fish for sharks with Steve-O as bait, Johnny catches anacondas with his bare hands... the list goes on. The gem in this collection of antics has to be the offensive interactions with the innocent people on the street by Johnny Knoxville and director-actor Spike Jonez, while disguised as a very old man and woman. Celebrity guests partaking in stunts include extreme-sports legends Tony Hawk and Mat Hoffman. The movie culminates in a beautifully choreographed, fantastical, and dangerous musical number not to be missed. Throughout the movie, it is apparent that the Jackass gang is older and a little more worn, especially when Bam pleads, "Please God, don't let there be a Jackass 3." For fans of the TV series and the films, a trilogy may be just what the doctor ordered. The DVD extras (deleted scenes, unrated material, and two pretty funny music videos) are more of the same and worth the watch, though some of it is not for the fainthearted. --Rachel Moss

Incendiary, madcap genius 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

On the surface, Wonder Showzen seems like a cutely subversive idea: take the format of a children's show such as Sesame Street or Teletubbies and mutate it into an ultra-warped work of black comedy. But the truth is that Wonder Showzen is something much more. Even as shows like The Sopranos and Lost push the envelope for quality and craft in television, the airwaves are still awash in tired, formulaic garbage that treats viewers like infants. Wonder Showzen is a corrective: an insanely surreal, wickedly inspired and vicious piece of programming that recreates comedy in its own freakish image.

Every element of Wonder Showzen arrives perfectly formed; it's hard to even think of where to begin talking about it. From dizzyingly surreal animation to re-conceptualized documentary to dirty puppet show, it's an absurdist collage of supercharged proportions. Perhaps most notable of all is "Beat Kids", the fake kid's news segment that could be a spin-off show of its own. While shows like The Office fictionalize their social awkwardness (with admittedly uproarious results), Wonder Showzen takes to the street and creates scenes that are sometimes so immensely uncomfortable they're difficult to watch.

Underneath it all is a spark of sometimes-camouflaged, sometimes-overt political fury, usually manifested as a byproduct of the show's refusal to spare "serious" topics from being run through its Dadaist meat grinder. Sometimes, the bits drift so far into an almost nihilistic weirdness that it seems as if the creators felt compelled to throw in some semblance of humanity, but it never feels phony or sanctimonious. You get the sense that, deep down, Wonder Showzen is actually a great work of social concern, like a social studies class team-taught by Upton Sinclair and Robert Crumb.

Another element of the show which cries out for recognition is the quality of its music: putting even shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy to shame, each season of Wonder Showzen contains dozens of songs of an almost uniformly stellar quality. The most memorable of the bunch - like a shockingly anthemic new wave pastiche about slavery - will stick in your head like the best bubblegum tunes. It's good enough that I'd buy a complete soundtrack without hesitation, just so I could listen to Letter N's lament in my car.

In short, Wonder Showzen is essential viewing if, like me, you're optimistic about the potential of television but continually disappointed in the lived reality. It's such a singular, inspired creation that it transcends its medium, becoming not just a great TV show, but simply great.

Woot! 4 out of 5 stars.

I knocked off 1 star because 3 of the episodes I wanted commentary on didn't have it. Even though it was targeted at adult males, I watched this as a little girl. It was on TV not only at the peak of MTVs coolness, but the peak of TVs coolness in general; the early & mid 90s.
..........................................................................
It had all the episodes, commentary, & even all the Liquid Television episodes; exactly what I wanted ^__^

What the crap? 1 out of 5 stars.

Okay, this series is my first exposure to Aeon Flux. Maybe you have to have seen the movie or something else for it to make sense, but I think that even then I would find the storytelling to be disjointed and confusing. There are bizarre jump cuts that leave one wondering how the hell the characters got where they are and what the blazes they're talking about.
One second Trevor is chasing Aeon down the street, the next she's inside the body of the fat guy.
How did she get there?
I feel like I'm seeing a very badly edited version of the story. Too boot, from the first second of the first episode I felt like I was jumping into the middle of a story. I even stopped it to make sure I had started with the correct episode. But again, maybe there's something in the movie that explains what's going on.
This is total crap and I feel robbed. [...].

This is one funny dvd! I haven't laughed so much since I don't know when! What a crazy gang, and Don Vito is hilarious - I laugh everytime I see him!! If you like these kind of shows this is a must have!

Wannabe Jackass... Sadly just crap 1 out of 5 stars.

Jackass was a great show, and if you haven't seen it - buy it now! Viva La Bam is simply lame in comparison. It's not funny at all, and neither is Bam. He is supposedly a pro skater, but does nothing that any average kid can do on a skateboard.

It's almost sad when he & his drop out Jackass crew are trying to make stupid jokes look funny, & laugh hysterically - it doesn't work. There is large part of an episode where they cover their house with lights (4 trucks worth), for Christmas. Nothing funny about that. Majority of all skits consist of his parents as victims. Don't know how they put up with it (guess money goes a long way).

Do not buy this, specially if you've seen Jackass, as it'll make it seem even worse.

Season 2: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you watched 3 minutes of any one show you might think this is the worst show on TV. It takes a little longer to appreciate the complexity of the underlying ideas the show brings.

The creators are smart, the kids are fantastic (gotta love Trevor and Beat Kids), and the subjects are relevant. I think they must have been shocked when they were green lit for a second season. They played this one like they knew there was no way they would be asked for a third.

Tackling issues like our constitution and the subversion of it, education, gun control, war, freedom of speech, slavery, racism, the meat market, TV and the common American idiot. They present these ideas for the MTV generation. A person can easily understand (and laugh), but are left with the overall message the story's portray, obviously or subconsciously.

They make you laugh, they make you sick (even the cartoons), they get you talking and they make you think.

An average show that can get old after a while. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

First of all reviewers say that this is a must own DVD for any Viva La Bam fan. I went to the network website (which all of you should know is MTV) to buy season one when I was a big fan at the time. I enjoyed it and also enjoyed it with the commentarry. I then bought seasons 2 and 3 at the same place and later also bought the second season of Punk'd. I enjoyed the other two seasons as well but before I bought season one it was told to me by my dad that I would only see it once and then it would be sitting on the shelves for a while. I still went on and bought the show on DVD. It was funny on MTV and it was funny on DVD. One of my favorite episodes was the prank war with Johnny Knoxville that I would watch over and over again but sooner or later my dad predicted this moment that I would stop watching it and the DVD would end up sitting on the shelf with other DVD's. Now I have lost intrest in watching Viva La Bam for a while. But it never sits on the shelf sometimes because my brother loves to watch it. So is it really worth buying an MTV show? Is it?

Is it staged? Another intresting question about the show. Bam doesn't care about much and enjoys destroying Don Vito's cars. Of course every time this occurs he is mad. Of course. I don't really know anyone who spends thousands of dollars on a car and doesn't get mad when it is destroyed. Except Bam. Once Bam and the CKY crew wreck Vito's house Vito strikes back and steals Bam's H2 hummer. Don Vito destroys it and Bam responds by saying I am proud of you. But if you think about the situation a little bit but still. Bam also wrecks his parents house and he doesn't care. He ruins old furniture from the old house by burning it after moving it to the new house. He doesn't care. Bam makes his parents extremely crazy. Phil seems to lazy to care but April just yells yet Bam doesn't listen. Bam doesn't care. But Bam has the talent to sure entertain the teens and others who love his show on MTV.

Earns a well deserved three stars because it was good while it lasted. But Bam should lighten up a little bit. His actions carry on too far. He is a decent person on Jackass (I wonder why) but on Viva La Bam he pushes the limits. While reading the above paragraph please don't think that I get offended by his actions because I don't. It is just the fact that Bam needs a little bit of therapy along with his family. Don Vito is funny and I will give props to him. The episodes included on the set are funny (but not extremely funny) but like I said it gets a well deserved three stars if not two and a half. This is one of those average shows that can get old after a while still.

Alice In Chains' timeless unplugged performance 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

MTV Unplugged (1996.), an Alice In Chains concert DVD

Alice In Chains' relatively short career (in terms of album releases) was a fantastically productive one. For me, they were much more than just a metal band or indeed a band that was pulled under the `grunge' moniker. Their three album releases and two EPs displayed both the bands ability as a heavy metal outfit but also one who added lots of acoustics and atmospherics to their music. Following the band's self-titled and final album release in 1995, they remained pretty low-key and out of the public eye. Then, a year later came along a concert to be remembered down as Alice In Chains took their turn to do an MTV unplugged set.

Theres something very unique about Alice In Chains' performance on this CD/DVD. The concert conveys so much. There's excellent musicianship and great chemistry between the band and there is also Layne Staley's performance, a voice sounding so tortured yet powerful. The band's performance is inspirational, yet there is an underlying feeling of tragedy and uncertainty to it. Layne Staley is clearly high on drugs during the performance, an addiction which would sadly lead to his unfortunate death in 2002. His performance is excellent, give or take the amusing moment where he forgets the lyrics during `Sludge Factory' but as many have said it is a tragic thing to see, especially now as we know how much more Layne would deteriorate in the following five years. The atmosphere is perfect on this concert DVD; a slightly gloomy but candle-lit setting and a great audience who are all clearly relishing this timeless gig. The band play a killer 13 song set that acts as a great snapshot of their overall career. There's a good mix of the acoustic stuff as seen on `Jar Of Flies' but there is also plenty of the heavier stuff masterfully set to an acoustic set. Theres sadly no tracks from Facelift (an acoustic take on `Man In The Box' would have been interesting) but it doesn't detract from the overall set.

The emotive and powerful `Nutshell' makes an excellent opener and follow ups `Brother' and `No Excuses' fully display AIC's acoustic set ability to the full. `Sludge Factory', a track that sounds heavy and warped on the original album release is an concert highlight. It always amazes me how good this song sounds acoustically. True, the band cut the song to 4 minutes as the weird outro to the song would be too difficult to carry out on an acoustic. The meat of the song sounds great however and just as crunching acoustically as it does on electric. Cantrell's chorus guitar melody sounds especially awesome. `Down In A Hole' and `Angry Chair' both translate brilliantly into this set a lead us up to the band's definitive `Rooster' which is a purely heart wrenching and powerful song. `Got Me Wrong' keeps that uncertain AIC musical feel to the music before another one of their semi-acoustic classics `Heaven Beside You' adds more great melody to the performance. `Would?', always a powerful yet ambiguous song keeps the band in full flow; the bass sounds great here. `Frogs' and `Over Now' are two atmospheric follow ups that do the album versions true justice live. `Frogs' is a chilling listen as usual. `The Killer Is Me' is a classic way for AIC to finish in true off-kilter, warped and unnerving fashion.

The MTV Unplugged DVD for Alice In Chains captures the band as their true selves, giving a timeless performance. This is a concert of pure emotion, atmosphere and heartache with many classic Alice In Chains songs to hear. It is also a sad yet fitting finale for Layne Staley. He is clearly in a bad state by the stage of this concert but it doesn't stop him giving one of his great performances and one which will be remembered for many years to come. This DVD (I recommend the DVD version over the CD for all of you who are viewing the CD product page) is a must for any AIC fan or anyone who appreciates grunge in general. This is one of the great concert DVD's, highly recommended!

R.I.P. Layne Staley

Cool preview 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I watched Bevis and Butthead on dvd and the preview to this show would always play. A beautiful song mixed with vivid, bright animation and it really sold the set for me. Too bad the animation shorts on this set are not as good as the preview. Ive only seen a few of them that are worth watching more then once. An alright set but nothing exciting, like the preview was.

Strange and beautiful. 5 out of 5 stars.

This DVD is easy to misunderstand. It is not designed to be like other mainstream cartoon shorts. However, Hertzfeldt and Judge have made incredible, thought-provoking choices for those who are willing to view with an open mind. Some of the shorts are not the best, but the majority of them are interesting, deep, and substantial, touching on some of the most fascinating aspects of philosophy and life. Make sure you are watching it with friends who you know will get the beauty of this set, because it really isn't for everyone.

sadistic, violent, and depressing. Yay! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am in full agreement with the descriptions given by several of the reviewers who rated this collection so poorly; where my opinion differs, however, is that I find all those points to be excellent reasons to buy and enjoy this collection.

If you're not afraid to admit that you have both a strong sense of dark humor and still retain your childlike sense of wonder, you will very likely enjoy the shorts in this set. Some of the shorts are very though-provoking and beautiful, and others are simply absurd. The constant that ties every piece together is an attempt to push boundaries and get people to look at animation in a different way, be it in pencil sketch or in high quality stop motion (an underrepresented art!).

Don't let a couple negative reviews scare you off: this is a thoroughly enjoyable set with lots of replay value.

Editorial Review:

There's no doubt that Julieta Venegas is talented in the recording studio. Three great albums have proved her originality (Aquí,, Bueninvento, ) and the demand for her music (Limón y Sal sold a million copies). But on stage, Venegas doesn't exude much energy or passion, so making a live album was risky for her career. On the other hand, like Alanis Morissette, Venegas was born to sing in small and intimate acoustic concert venues, and away from the masses, she knows how to create the magic one can find in her albums. On MTV Unpluggged, Venegas invites performers like Natalia Lafourcade, La Mala Rodríguez, Marisa Monte, and Juan Son to recreate new versions of her greatest hits that result in fresh and exciting collaborations. It's a great musical montage of her practically perfect career. --Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español People en Español)

--Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español People en Español)
