MadAboutMadeline!!!!!! 4 out of 5 stars.

My 4 year old daughter and I watched this movie. Overall, it is wonderful.A point in the movie I disagree with, in the book, Madeline is NOT orphaned. In one book she is at boarding school where her Papa has sent Christmas presents.So..we know she is not a orphan. Also, since the boarding school is near the Eiffel Tower, one would have to assume that Miss Clavel should have an accent, as do most of the actors/actresses in the movie. However, she does not have an accent in the movie. I'm so used to improvising an accent when I read the books to my daughter, Miss Clavel's key line is always sitting up in bed and uttering, "Something is not right" and I like to believe she would say it like this, "Somesing iz not' rright." However, the actress in the movie sounds completely American. She does a nice job, I just wish she would have improv'd an accent. One last thing, when one of the boarding school girls is running around looking for Genevieve, she tells someone that Genevieve is a golden retriever, however the dog actor in the movie is clearly played by a yellow lab. Weird little oddities, but nonetheless noteworthy. Besides picking at this so badly, this movie is completely fun, touching and warm.

Editorial Review:

The schoolgirl adventures of Madeline, a flame-haired orphan, are lovingly adapted from Ludwig Bemelmans's classic children's books. His sly and witty writing is transferred to this first-rate film, one that should not be thought of merely as childhood entertainment. Spunky Madeline is most adept at finding trouble. She is also a quick-witted and likable child who can solve almost any problem. Her latest scheme is to keep her school, which is also her home, from being sold by its owner, the recently widowed Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne). Unlike most youthful movie fare, this adventure boasts high production values that wisely include colorful Parisian locations. Hatty Jones is all spunky self-sufficiency and sweet innocence in the title role, and Frances McDormand is quite humorous as the stern school-mistress, Miss Clavel. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Not new --- old favorites in a repackaged format. Disappointing! 2 out of 5 stars.

Thought this dvd was a "new" story, but it is actually the previously published "Madeline at the Louvre" and "Madeline Eiffel Tower" dvds in a repackaged format. The BONUS feature is "Madeline in Cannes" which may or may not be new, I am not familiar with this story. The other dvd we ordered "Madeline in America" is also repackaged favorites---nothing new.

Very cute DVD 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3-year-old twin girls love this Madeline CD and it's a nice alternative to the overly commercialized DVD options out there. We are looking to order some more Madeline episodes.

Madeline's Christmas
It's Christmas Eve in Paris and 11 of the girls in two straight lines, as well as their beloved Miss Clavel, are sick in bed. Madeline, everyone's favorite smallest one, is the only one left standing and so she bravely gives up her chance to go home for Christmas in order to bring tea and tissues to her friends. When the old house covered with vines is also covered with snow thanks to a storm, it looks like the holiday won't be very merry until the girls' own Christmas angel shows up to make things right. Based on Ludwig Bemelmans's book, the story and little-girl French accents couldn't be more charming.

Madeline and the Toy Factory
Miss Clavel takes her class to visit a toy factory owned by an old friend. But while the old pals chat, the red-haired smallest one leaps onto the doll conveyor belt and before one can say "Oh, Madeline!" she is boxed up with the rest of the dolls and shipped off to a toy store. The mother of an ailing girl purchases her to lift her daughter's spirits, which, of course, the amazingly lifelike doll does. Miss Clavel and company track down their missing schoolgirl, leaving the sickly girl even more bereft, until Madeline finds a way to make it up to her. Like the others in this series, this one is based on Ludwig Bemelmans's book of the same name and features Christopher Plummer narrating Madeline's gentle lesson that people's feelings are more important than playing games. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Disappointing---old stories repackaged into a new dvd 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

We thought this was going to be a new Madeline story...unfortunately it is the old "Madeline in New York" and "Madeline in Hollywood" repackaged in a new dvd with a new cover. Both episodes have already been available on dvd for many years. The "bonus" feature is "Madeline and the wild west" which may or may not be new, I'm not sure. Too bad they cannot come up with some new episodes, instead of just a new cover to the dvd.

Mom likes it, kids want to watch it again 5 out of 5 stars.

The three episodes on Madeline in America have the little orphan girl and Miss Clavel go to Hollywood where Madeline gets a role in a movie, visit the Big Apple so she can introduce French (Belgian) Fries to America and a bonus episode where she gets to ride a horse in a rodeo.
The lessons here is smarts and good will conquer all difficult situations.
Subtle lessons pleased our mom reviewer at [...] and her kids wanted to watch this again and again.

A kids review. 5 out of 5 stars.

Highly Recommend! My two-year old and her parents love them! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this collection of Madeline DVDs purely on the recommendation of a friend, having never seen one episode. My daughter loves them and my husband and I catch ourselves unable to move away, we must watch them too! They are very well done and present a whole new world to my toddler. The characters speak with French accents and insert French words which opens up a new language to her as well as a new world. The stories are simple but intelligent. Madeline is charming and the values presented are wholesome and timeless. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this set. It is a bargain.

"Madeline at the Ballet"
In "Madeline at the Ballet," ballet master Valmont recruits the little French girls to perform with prima ballerina Tatiana in a production of The Happy Swan--except for poor Madeline, who is airily dismissed by him as "too small." (It doesn't help that she isn't as graceful as the other girls.) Madeline is devastated. Fortunately, an influential friend convinces Valmont to give her another chance. The rehearsals don't go off without a hitch, but with patience and persistence--and a little encouragement--Madeline triumphs in the end. Throughout, Miss Clavel's support for her littlest charge never falters. The rambunctious Pepito, however, teases all of the girls for hopping about like "frogs." He changes his tune when Valmont taps him to be in the show. He quickly discovers that ballet isn't as easy as it looks. Actor Christopher Plummer narrates the 25-minute program in author Ludwig Bemelmans's trademark rhyming couplets.
"Madeline in New York"
Velvet-voiced Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) narrates this whimsical account of Madeline's first trip to New York. After Madeline, her schoolmates, pal Pepito, and chaperone Miss Clavel have seen the sites, including the Empire State Building, they take in a baseball game. The adventure really begins when Madeline catches the first home run ball of the season and wins a bridge--the Brooklyn Bridge--from Mr. Moneybags. Owning and operating a major metropolitan bridge turns out to be a formidable task--even for a plucky girl like Madeline. Fortunately, the city's kindly mayor comes to her aid. Along the way, she serves as the bat girl for the Yankees, introduces French fries to America, gets to enjoy her own ticker-tape parade, and even has a street--Madison Avenue--named after her. She will experience further New York adventures in "Madeline's Halloween Spooktacular." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Madeline's Dog Stories 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is two years old, and this was our first Madeline DVD. I like the fact that it is faithful to the style of the Madeline books, with charming animation accompanied by narration in rhymed couplets. Both stories on this DVD focus on the dog, Genevieve. One story describes how Genevieve came to live with Madeline (based on the book, "Madeline's Rescue"), and the other describes her entry into a Parisian dog show. Filled with humor and delightful songs. My daughter especially loved the episode about "Madeline's Rescue."

Very good DVD 5 out of 5 stars.

We have loved Madeline since we purchased the Madeline at the Ballet/Madeline in New York. We love Madeline and the Dog show, it has great songs and is very cute. The second episode of Madeline's rescue is older and is more musical. It is a little sad for my 2 year old daughter to watch. She got very worried about Genevieve when they show her being driven out of town and tossed out of the car, in the rain. Because of this, we don't watch the rescue one right now, but really enjoy the dog show.

A great DVD to share with the children in your life! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

"In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines." In 1939, Ludwig Bemelmans began writing stories about a group of girls in a school in Paris, foremost among whom was the irrepressible Madeline. In the 1990s these wonderful stories were animated (and narrated by Christopher Plummer), producing a series of cartoons that are certain to be considered classics for many years to come.

This DVD contains two 25-minute features. In Madeline's Winter Vacation, the girls set out for a visit to Miss Clavel's aunt, who lives in the Alps. Pepito fills the girls heads with stories of the Abominable Snowman, which really begin to bear fruit when a sudden snowstorm snows the girls in. In Madeline in London, the girls are saddened when Pepito's father (the Spanish Ambassador) is reassigned to London. But, ever resourceful, Madeline organizes a trip to visit Pepito...and then she remembers that it is Pepito's birthday!

My family and I love this DVD; the stories are wonderful, and funny. We consider this a great purchase. If I have one complaint against this DVD, it is that it has no "extras"; there are the two episodes and a short commercial for the other DVDs, and that is all. However, as this DVD is so reasonably priced, I would not let that stand in your way. This is a great DVD to share with the children in your life; buy it!

I loved these movies for several reasons. First of all, these movies have the same quality as all the Madeline cartoons, and secondly, I loved the lessons that they taught. This is an excellent DVD.

Adaptations of the Books plus some fluff 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Children periodically fall into a cultus for cartoon characters. In France the word is "personages" which captures a bit of the flavour of the endearment certain characters invoke. "Madeline" is such a character.

If your daughter has fallen in love with Madeline, eventually you will consider buying the DVDs for rainy days. The complete "Collector's" set presents a bargain, for the weaker offerings in the cartoon series are cleverly paired with a stronger must-have cartoon (each disc contains two shorts). In other words, if you try to beat the box price you will miss "Madeline at the Ballet" (excellent) while trying to skip "Madeline in New York" (tedious).

My wife and I pre-screen everything our children see, and this is harmless.

I strongly encourage coupling the DVDs with reading to children aloud the original Madeline stories as an excellent introduction to light verse.

Editorial Review:

"Madeline and the 40 Thieves"
When mittens, caps, and even coats begin to disappear, Madeline and her classmates turn to the usual suspect--Pepito. But for once their next-door neighbor is innocent; even his "bad hat" is missing. So our red-haired heroine dons her detective gear and joins Pepito and a police officer in search of the robber in this 24-minute episode based on Ludwig Bemelmans's timeless characters. When the trio spots a girl wearing the bad hat, she is treated to a rhyme as clever as--if more irreverent than-- Bemelmans's originals: "I am Pepito, you bad bandito. / Your life as a thief is now finito." However, the impoverished girl returns the hat and the detectives press on to find the real thieves: 40 magpies with charitable intentions.
"Madeline and the New House"
Madeline's boarding school, the "old house in Paris that was covered with vines," is falling apart in this lively installment of the video series based on the characters of the beloved Ludwig Bemelmans books. When falling plaster nearly hits some dignitaries touring the antiquated building, it's the last straw for the owner, who puts up a condemnation sign and sends the dozen schoolgirls, their teacher, and their cook to live in a cramped apartment across town. Disaster ensues when the neighbors take an instant dislike to the rowdy girls, not to mention their dog, Genevieve. But never fear, Miss Clavel gets to sing, Madeline involves the historical society, and--with the help of some handymen--the old house becomes the refurbished "new" house of the title. Ages 3 to 8. --Kimberly Heinrichs
