Love The Show, Hate The Release Format 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Volume 1 continues the release schedule for one of television's alltime greatest television series. Beloved and revered, this series will always be considered one of the alltime best. Yes, because of its' longevity, but also because of the great acting, directing, and writing displayed on the series.

But still, I cannot recommend these sets. There is no excuse, no justification the studio can make for splitting a 20-season series up and dividing each season into multiple sets. It's greed, shortsighted, fear of producing full season sets that won't sell - maybe one or more or all of these things. But the Western lover, loyal as we are to our favorite stars, our favorite movies and series, are being made to pay a price that is way too high to pay. To think how long it may be before the entire series is released is too painful. Suffice it to say that it will be WAY TOO LONG at the current rate.

At this point, it is probably too much to expect the studio to come to its senses. But it is worth it to say that they need to come to their senses, and soon.

A fate that happens 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very special five dvd set of Little House. If you enjoyed all the nine seasons that was on tv you will love this. I do recomend you watch the nine seasons first and the viewer will get a good understanding of this collectors edition. Its very warm ,sad indeed, and frustrating. Fate is a funny word to all these three movies that I saw. The first one is the story of Albert whos future is backed off when he wants to become a doctor is encounterd of a physical problem. The second one is when something happens to Amonso and Lauras little daughter Rose when they by acidently leave it behind. The last one called the last Farewell is the ending of what happens to a town we all loved seeing becomes taken away. Its a real unplesant feeling when you put these three movies together. But it tells you something what could happen with out knowing. The packaging of the box set is really nice. Good photgraphs of the characters. It opens really nice.Comes with two bonus DVDS theres a quiz of Multiple choice questions to test your knowledge. There tricky! You should think of the questions sometimes twice before answering. But there fun. I do recomend this set to all the Little House Fans. You will also love the interview of Melisa Gilbert very well presented how she talks about the program.Im glad I ordered this set it sure gave me memmories .

A trio of terrific westerns 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nowadays, the Western is almost a dead genre, a far cry from the days in which it dominated the movies. Of course, even in its heyday, it had various stages. Earlier Westerns tended to focus on adventure, with cowboys and Indians and bank robbers. Around the 1950s, a new subgenre began to appear, the so-called Adult Western. These Westerns tended to focus more on character and less on action. The Fox Western Classics features three such movies.

The Gunfighter is considered to be one of the first Adult Westerns, with Gregory Peck has the title character. He is a man considered the best gunfighter of his era, a title that he is forced to defend. He takes refuge in the town of Cayenne, where an old friend is marshal and his estranged wife is living under another name with their son. Even here, however, danger lurk.

Rawhide is perhaps the least "adult" of the three movies. Tyrone Power is working at an isolated stagecoach station and is taken hostage by a band of robbers planning on robbing an incoming, gold-laden stage. Complicating matters is Susan Hayward and her infant niece who are trapped at the station also. Hugh Marlowe leads the band of robbers, but it's Jack Elam who provides the real danger.

Hayward and Marlowe are also in Garden of Evil, also directed by Rawhide director Henry Hathaway. This is the epic of the three, with Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark leading the cast and a young Rita Moreno in one of her first (brief) roles. It is shot in Cinescope and scored by the great Bernard Hermann. Cooper and Widmark are a couple passengers on a California-bound steamer that is stranded in Mexico with engine problems. Stuck in port for weeks, they let themselves be hired by Hayward, who needs them to rescue her husband (Marlowe) who's stuck in a mine. Getting there is an arduous enough trip, but getting back may be more perilous, with Apaches dogging their every move.

In quality terms, these are all four-to-five star movies, and there are enough extras - including commentaries and featurettes - to make this a top notch set. If you enjoy Westerns, this is a trio of near classics that is worth viewing.

Great series for the family to watch!!! I watched them when i was a kid...but they are always fun to watch...

Extraordinary 5 out of 5 stars.

The pilot and first half of this series is exceptional. It captures that magic of the book way beyond my expectations. My husband even liked it. The second half of the season took on a life of it's own and they must have been running out of material as the episodes became obviously preachy with good messages about racism, logging and other weighty issues. They are good messages but a little too obvious and less magical. Still, it's a fine series and I would recommend it to anyone who is tired of sex, violence and crudeness dominating the TV air ways.

Best season 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Thanks to Paramount for releasing another season -- and this is arguably the best. Season 3 contains "Incident of the Fish out of Water" "Incident on the Road Back" and "Incident of the New Start" which all lend more humanity and backstory to the characters. This season also contains "Incident of the Boomerang" one of the best in all 8 seasons. Enjoy!

Head 'em up, move 'em out! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent T.V. series. In a time were T.V. is all about sex and violence, I find I have to go back a few years and revisit shows like Dr. Quinn that were safe, and yes, always had a happy ending. I recommend this to any family or any person, like me, who can't find a t.v. show with a decent story-line to get into.

    Editorial Review:

"Rawhide ... Complete First Season ... Paramount Pictures (2006)" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

CBS Television and Paramount Pictures presents "RAWHIDE: THE FIRST SEASON" (9 January 1959 - 25 September 1959) (1180 mins/In Glorious Black & White) (digitally remastered in Dolby) -- Rawhide was a television western series that aired on the U.S. network CBS from 1959 to 1966. The show starred Eric Fleming and launched the career of Clint Eastwood --- The series ran for eight seasons on the CBS network on Friday nights, from January 9, 1959 to January 4, 1966, with a total of 217 episodes, all filmed and broadcast in black and white --- It was produced and sometimes directed by Charles Marquis Warren who also produced early episodes of Gunsmoke --- Warren based Rawhide on the movie Cattle Empire that he directed in 1958 and for which Endre Bohem was a screenwriter and Paul Brinegar, Steve Raines and Rocky Shahan were actors; all also worked in Rawhide --- Its premiere episode reached the top 20 in the Nielsen Ratings. It rose steadily in popularity until, towards the end of the series run, it was one of America's top ten shows --- Rawhide was the fourth longest-running American TV western, beaten only by nine years of The Virginian and Wagon Train, fourteen years of Bonanza, and twenty years of Gunsmoke.

The episode would be introduced, usually by some words from Gil Favor but sometimes by others --- The typical Rawhide story involved drovers, portrayed by Eric Fleming (Trail Boss Gil Favor) and Clint Eastwood (ramrod Rowdy Yates), coming upon people on the trail and getting drawn into solving whatever problem they presented or were confronting --- Some of the stories were obviously easier in production terms but the peak form of the show was convincing and naturalistic, and sometimes brutal. Its situations could range from parched plains to anthrax, ghostly riders to wolves, cattle raiding, bandits, murderers, and so forth --- A problem on such drives was the constant need for water, and the scout spent much of his time looking for it, sometimes finding water holes, even rivers had dried up - In some ways it was similar to the TV series Wagon Train that debuted in 1957.

Of all the western characters on TV, these were the only real cowboys, because they drove cows. There were also sheep boys who drove sheep, pig boys who looked after pigs, etc. The name cowboys became a generic name in western films and TV series --- The theme song's lyrics were written by Ned Washington in 1958. It was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin and sung by pop singer Frankie Laine. The theme song became very popular --- It was covered several times and parts of the song also appear in more recent movies like The Blues Brothers and Shrek.-- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
